I think many social media sites and services in general have this mindset. YouTube is certainly the same. Probably why TikTok took off because of its focus on snackable content...and like many snacks, you forget how much you've consumed until the whole package is empty lol
YouTube followed with...
I would also give Turn Based Lovers a follow on Twitter/X as they rotate hosting duties for turn-based Thursdays -- you can get a glimpse into some of the new tactics games that are being developed!
Just wanted to share this with you all in case you knew people in the industry that could help out. One of my most anticipated games next year, Jumplight Odyssey, had their development paused indefinitely due to lay offs :(
League of Geeks (Armello, if you played that game before, I love it!)...
I agree and I'd like to see more games explore ways to develop relationships between characters as a central part of an RPG.
But it doesn't necessarily have to show up as dating/romance (though that seems to be the easiest implementation). Games like Wartales and The Iron Oath have their own...
@Antimatter I wrote that and then a few days afterwards, I learned about the regrettable (but respectful) decision for them to push out the launch date. It just means more to look forward to in 2024!!
I will say there's a dramatic decrease in releases in December - not many games with confirmed...
What I haven't yet come across in our discussion of game is art (or not) is the perspective of the maker? Does art need to serve a purpose for it to be called art? Could art be an expression of the maker and so anything constructed, painted, photographed, videoed, coded that represents an...
@Antimatter Broken Roads is happening in just about two weeks!!!
Also, recently played a gem called Soccer Kids (sorry I used the s-word here instead of football, but it's in the name) -- it's a turn-based strategy game where you control kids playing soccer. I know it sounds a bit weird but I...
There are a whole bunch of indie (tempted to put this in quotes per the conversation happening in the other thread) turn-based tactics and RPGs coming out in November that I wrote about here: https://ingamescientist.substack.com/p/new-games-to-whet-your-appetite-in
I'll be continuing to have a...
I think as many of you have already said, the indie or not argument is largely a matter of team size. Compared to the one or few-person teams out there, Larian is a 450-person company -- not really small by any standard. I lean most on the origins of the word indie -- one or a few that represent...
More to feed the FFTactics nostalgia:
Tactics Returners: https://tacticsreturners.com/
Untamed Tactics: https://twitter.com/Play_Untamed
Wandering Sword: https://twitter.com/WanderingSwordG
I would also follow Turnbased Thursdays on Twitter/X for a great showcase of current and upcoming games!!
I've got plenty of stories where a 96% chance to hit missed, leading to utter chaos for my squad in XCOM 🤣
But I still love me some randomness in my games...it's a good way to test your ability to react to things on the fly. All the best laid plans could go south and I like testing myself to see...
If you are leaning heavy into FFTactics...
Symphony of War: The Nephilim Saga
Cassette Beasts (this one is like...Pokemon meets Power Rangers Megazord?)
Wartales, Wildermyth, Iron Oath, Xenonauts 2 are all solid choices.
If you want a bit of Aliens in your story, USC: Counterforce (just...
Wildermyth is also loosely based on the D&D ruleset (couldn't tell you which edition, but probably none, given the loose association). It's a great game to get into the turn-based genre!
I totally understand where you are coming from!
With all of life happening, it's been hard to find the time and dedicate it to ttRPGs. I would also feel bad if I joined one of those groups only to have to bail because I've got a lot going on.
CRPGs and video games in general have helped scratch...
I think the feeling I have towards Starfield is that it is trying to do too many things at once. I'm having a hard time deciding if I want to play this game because I don't know what it is trying to offer me. With some of the latest changes to No Man's Sky (and they keep coming, for free!) I...
I've got to second some of the mentions here, including Mass Effect and Babylon 5 (I'm so glad there are others who remember that show on here!).
Both set in space and with a plethora of space-faring creatures and cultures make for a really vibrant world that I would also love to explore...
Maybe I'll update this thread twice a month as some of these articles can be lengthy...so the second reading for May is this one:
https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/15554120231170152
This one talks about quest and quest design, something that I think you all would appreciate as you play...
I have a few that I'm looking forward to:
Mars Tactics (destructable environments that can be used for cover!)
Falling Frontier (feels like what I imagine WWII naval warfare to be like but in space)
Shadow Gambit: The Lost Crew (like Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun but much more)
Xenonauts...
