Amanda made her way up the tower, freeing some cursed channelers and evolving Avery along the way, until finally she reached the top. After beating the Rocket members, she talks to Mr. Fuji, who escorts her back outside. At his house, he gives her the Poké Flute. Now she can get rid of those pesky Snorlax that are blocking the way to Fuchsia City.

Speaking of Snorlax, there was one just to the south, on Route 12. Seeing as how there was no grass in sight, Amanda battled it with the intention of catching it. Thanks to Channing’a Dragon Rage, she succeeded.

Route 12= Snorlax

Nissie joined the team, replacing Hulk. At long last, the monkey could relax. He performed exceptionally well, but Fighting-types aren’t particularly useful for the later half of the game. Furthermore, Nissie can learn Shadow Ball from a TM, and has a great Attack stat with which she can use it, so that makes her the team’s new Psychic-type killer.

Now comes the gauntlet of trainers that makes its home on this stretch of road between Lavender Town and Fuchsia City. This stretch can really be rough on the team’s stamina (specifically their moves’ PP).

As a side note, this is also when the game gets pretty serious, at least as far as levels go. The next two gyms will require some grinding before the team is ready for them.

After a long, arduous struggle to get through the gauntlet of trainers without having to retreat back to Lavender Town, Amanda finally made it to Fuchsia City. Along the way, she caught Gustl, the Venonat on Route 13.

Route 13= Venonat

And on Route 14, she caught Tomas, the Ditto.

Route 14= Ditto

After catching Ditto, there were no other Pokémon to catch on this side of Fuchsia.

After making it to town, Amanda made a beeline toward the Safari Zone to see about making a catch there. She encountered a Nidorina, who ran.

Safari Zone= No Catch

I was hoping to catch an Exeggcute here, but alas, it seems I’ll be using Avery as my Psychic user. After that, Amanda made her way to the end of the Safari Zone and grabbed a set of Gold Teeth and HM 03 (Surf). After the excursion was over, she delivered the Gold Teeth to the safari warden, who gave her HM 04 (Strength).

Next, Amanda will fly to Celadon and go down Cycling Road to clear out that section of trainers and wild encounters. After that, the fight in the Fuchsia gym begins.

I found out that I could catch a new water Pokémon in Fuchsia City by using the Good Rod that I also found there. And so Amanda caught Shirlee, the Poliwag!

Fuchsia City= Poliwag

She’s a wonderful find, indeed, taking Garan’s place on the team. I took a short trip to Saffron City to grab Psychic for Avery, so now I now longer have need of a Ground-type for dealing with Poison-type Pokémon.

While in Celadon, Amanda did some casual gambling in order to get the TM for Shadow Ball, then taught it to Nissie the Snorlax. Both of the next gyms are now covered.

She then trekked down Cycling Road, dealing with the trainers there. Channing had some close calls with poison, since the trainers there use Poison-types, and Cycling forces you to move unless you hold B to brake. We very nearly had a KO’d Gyarados back there. At least Portier finally got his wings.

My current team is now:
Shirlee (Poliwag) lvl 14
Channing (Gyarados) lvl 34
Nissie (Snorlax) lvl 34
Flora (Electrode) lvl 34
Portier (Charizard) lvl 36
Avery (Haunter) lvl 36

More training awaits!

After training her Pokémon to level 38, Amanda took on the Fuchsia City gym. This gym has Psychic-type trainers inside it for some reason, despite being a Poison-type gym. Even so, they weren’t much challenge to Avery and Nissie.

Koga was just as easy, honestly. Despite Avery being three levels lower than his Weezing, Psychic just swept his team up without issues.

And now on to Saffron City!

Amanda’s first stop in Saffron was at the Fighting Dojo. Now, before I went anywhere, I rolled the dice again to determine which of the three possible Pokémon I can get in this town will be mine. And so, after beating the dojo, Amanda would walk out without taking a Fighting-type Pokémon.

Next up was Silph Co. The trainers here can be surprisingly tough, it turns out, when Flora was nearly KO’d by another Electrode’s Self Destruct. But they survived, and there was no need to retreat and replace them.

Going through the tower, Amanda eventually ran into Dillon once again, who apparently didn’t care that Team Rocket was taking over the place. He challenged Amanda to a fight once again, but was bested. After that victory, Amanda got her prize: a Lapras named Julie.

Saffron City= Lapras

Saffron City’s gym came next, and boy was it scary at certain points. The Psychic-types were easy for Nissie to just blow away with Shadow Ball. The few Ghost-types were positively terrifying, for one reason: Destiny Bond. Thankfully, the AI was dumb enough to confuse Nissie so that she hit herself instead of actually using Shadow Ball, or she would be gone.

Sabrina wasn’t difficult. Even her level 43 Alakazam wasn’t a match for a critical hitting Shadow Ball from Nissie.

I’m thinking of replacing Channing with Julie, just so Amanda can use Surf without it being held back by a terrible Sp. Att. stat.

Current team is:
Nissie (Snorlax) lvl 42
Portier (Charizard) lvl 40
Flora (Electrode) lvl 40
Shirlee (Poliwhirl) lvl 40
Avery (Haunter) lvl 44
Channing (Gyarados) lvl 40

Amanda took a short trip south of Fuchsia, battled the trainers on the beach, and caught a Krabby named Guilla.

Route 19= Krabby

She then vaguely remembered seeing a small river east of Rock Tunnel that she could surf on, so she brought out Julie the Lapras to swim down to the Power Plant. There, she caught Jocelyn, the Magneton (Yes!). They would replace Flora on the team as the new Electric-type.

Power Plant= Magneton

Amanda also found a big bird that resembled a lightning storm, but she got the feeling she wasn’t quite ready for it yet.

Alright, well, I’ve returned after my long hiatus to continue this run. And so, the tale of Amanda and her team of (hopefully) survivors continue their journey.

The team is as follows, after some grinding:
Portier—Charizard lvl. 43
Julie—Lapras lvl. 43
Avery—Haunter lvl. 44
Jocelyn—Magneton lvl. 43
Nissie—Snorlax lvl. 43
Shirlee—Poliwrath lvl. 43

I evolved Shirlee after getting to 43, because Poliwhirl learns Belly Drum at that level, which maximizes the Atk. stat at the cost of half the Pokémon’s max health. Risky, but potentially good.

Surfing down Route 19 and 20 on her way to the Seafoam and Cinnabar islands, Amanda caught a Tentacool named Herve on Route 20, and a Slowpoke named Mayne in the Seafoam Islands. Then, after a shorter-than-expected trek through the maze of Seafoam, she ended up on the other side. Now, not much else stands in the way between her and Cinnabar.

After finally reaching Cinnabar Island, Amanda was finally able to revive either the fossil at Mt. Moon, or the old amber found in Pewter City. A coin flip determined which would be revived, and Mirabelle the Omanyte was reborn!

I was kinda hoping for the Aerodactyl, but I’ll take it. Mirabelle will just have to wait in the box for now, though, until I need another water type.

Amanda tried to get inside the Cinnabar gym, but alas, the door was locked. She instead decided to check out an old mansion nearby, and as she was cleaning out the trainers and items there, she found a Grimer named Sigfrieda, as well as a Secret Key! And Amanda knew exactly where to fit that key.

The Cinnabar gym! In preparation for her big fight with Blaine, Amanda raised up her team to lvl. 45 (not hard considering all the trainers she fought along the way). Once ready, she entered the gym.

Now, Cinnabar’s gym actually allows the player to skip all the gym trainer battles by answering an easy quiz, but quizzes are boring! Amanda battled all the trainers leading up to Blaine, leveling Julie to 46 before challenging the big boss himself.

The battle was a cakewalk. Julie used Rain Dance on the first turn and swept Blaine’s team. Another badge down, and one more to go. But first, a detour…

Helloooooooo, Sevii Islands! I have mixed feelings about this little bit of added content. It didn’t exist in the original, and the fact that the game forces the player to do some of it before the last gym irks me a bit. That said, I don’t really mind the content itself. I just think they could have left it all in the post-game.

Anyway, Amanda arrived at One Island at the behest of Bill, who wanted to pay a visit to an old friend. When they got there, Bill’s friend, Celio, was busy fixing a broken machine at the Pokémon Center. Bill decided to help him out, telling Amanda to deliver a meteorite to another friend of his on another island.

Three of the islands are open to explore. Onward!

After getting the errand from Bill, Amanda headed east, to Kindle Road. In the grass, she encountered Gustave, the Ponyta. After battling some trainers on the way to Mt. Ember, she discovered the Ember Spa, and here, in this place of relaxation, she met an old man who gave her the HM for Rock Smash.

Afterwards, she continued north to Mt. Ember itself, where the found Danny the Machoke. After collecting the items on the path, she decided to return to the dock, planning to sail to Two Island.

On Two Island, Amanda found the guy she had to give the meteorite to in the game corner, but unfortunately his daughter(?) Lostelle was, well, lost. After that, a biker burst into the game corner and asked for directions to Three Island. Amanda decided to head there as well, but first took a trip to Cape Brink, where she met a woman who taught Blast Burn to Portier. Not much else happened on Two Island, so on to Three Island!

On Three Island, Amanda stepped in to stop some bikers from roughing up the people living there. Afterwards, one of the villagers told her that Lostelle was at Bond Bridge, north of the town. When she got there, though, she didn’t find Lostelle, but instead she encountered Katriane, the Persian.

Continuing past Bond Bridge, she made her way into Berry Forest, where she navigated the maze of trees to Find Lostelle at the end. Upon talking to her, however, Amanda was ambushed by a creepy Hypno! Thankfully, Nissie was having none of its nonsense, and body slammed it to oblivion.

After rescuing Lostelle, Amanda returned to Two Island, where she finally got to hand over the meteorite and finish the side quest. Upon returning to Bill, they were ready to depart back to Cinnabar Island. The main story could now continue.
