I know that I'd have to edit him/her in EE Keeper or similar, but is there any role-playing reason why I shouldn't make a dwarven paladin or blackguard.
(or any other race for that matter.)

In second edition and this setting, it just wasn't a thing. Demi-humans weren't even allowed in the Most Noble Order of the Radiant Heart (think Mazzy), even if they were clerics of Helm, Tyr, or Illmater. AD&D 2e was in a kinda weird space between traditional D&D (where demihumans were ultra rare and their own class in some cases) and WotC D&D (where anything goes). It's a somewhat more coherent world than what came before (Greyhawk and Mystara), but still has its quirks.

It is exactly an early editions of Dungeon and Dragons thing. One of the things about early DnD is that the world that the game created was dominated by humans, and so player choices and restricitons were made to both reflect that fact, and also for game balance reasons.

In the cool/interesting video thread, I shared a one video from channel Daddy Rolled a 1. The owner of this channel often takes a look at things, mechancis, classes, monster etc. from early DnD and explains why they were made like they were, how the change throught different editions etc. What I said paragraph above was a short version of what I've heard there.

There is a mod in which Mazzy becomes a paladin called: Believe it or not: Mazzy the paladin. Pretty sure that she becomes a Paladin of Avoreen.

There is of course not the same problem in making Dwarves into Blackguards.
