Experimenting with expanded-value dice mechanics using 3D printing

Hi everyone,

I’ve recently been experimenting with some unusual custom dice concepts using my 3D printer, and I thought this community might enjoy seeing one of the mechanics I’ve been working on.

The idea started with a standard 6-sided die shape, but instead of having only one visible value per side, each side contains multiple “face reels” that can display different values.

For example:

  • 2 face reels per side turns the d6 shape into a 12-value die
  • 3 face reels per side turns it into an 18-value die
  • 4 face reels per side turns it into a 24-value die
What I enjoy about the concept is that it keeps the familiar feel and rolling behavior of a standard cube while expanding the possible outcomes and mechanics.

I’ve attached an image showing the three versions side-by-side.

I’m curious what kinds of RPG mechanics, tables, or gameplay ideas people here would use something like this for. Random encounters? Story events? Magic systems? Something completely different?

Would love to hear your thoughts and ideas.
