Hey all,

I recently made a video about Icewind Dale 2. Ton of fun (even if life did everything it could to delay the release)!



As much as I love the Enhanced Edition mod, we really need an official release. Someone's gotta find that code.

Good video, it almost makes me want to give Icewind Dale 2 a chance once again. Unfortunately, it really doesn't work well on my PC, as I recall. And even if it does work, in terms of performance it feels like such a downgrade from literally every other Infinity Engine game, enhanced or not.

Also personally, I like how you mentioned that limitations are important to the balance of the game. I think what you cannot do in-game or in particular circumstances is as important if not more, what you can do.

Also, throwing shade at bards never hurt anybody.

I earnestly came to despise that character. Just did absolutely nothing. I'll never understand the hype. Maybe the kits in the EE games are better.

So installing IW2 on a modern system is a hassle, you say? You should try to make it run on Ubuntu with an emulator like WINE... Now that's a harrowing experience! : D

I had to read a lot of comments sprinkled throughout different forums. The NVIDIA issues are what made everything so complicated, I think. At some point I had to edit the emulator's registry, which is something that you almost never have to do to get a game running on it.

I think the main reason that IW2 (and the other old IE games) don't work well on newer systems is cause many of the old drivers were removed from either Windows 8 or 10. Ironically, you could install and play the classics with basically no issue on Windows 7.

Mind you, those drivers are absolutely tiny, and there was basically no reason to remove them, but if something isn't broken, rest assured that Microsoft will find a way to break it.

Heart of Fury in IWDII is basically <70AC ≈ 0AC. So either you build a specialist unhittable deep gnome decoy who can't do anything except dodge, or you hide behind a wall of HoF summons with huge health pools.

Icewind dale 2 is quite cool, with a very heavy combat focus - it is long combat slog for those who like that. As op talks about it is 3rd Ed so your go to by the end is high DC spells like Mass Dominate and Wail of the Banshee which were always a crapshoot in 2nd ed but become goat in 3rd ed. Physical only classes like ranger and fighter are notoriously poor investments in IWD2 as well. They just suck compared to say a Dreadmaster of Bane with GSF: Enchantment, a melee Sorcerer, or a Druid who can cast and shapeshift - I know right: the crpg where shapeshifting is good.

This is my favorite of the IE games. The addition of 3e skills and feats make this the best one for me. That little bit of extra character customization goes a long way.
