Baldur's Gate, some party logistics...

So, I'm not posting a SSLP (yet) due to my last three runs stalling out, but I'm working on another trilogy run with the canon party. I'm taking notes and whatnot as I go, so if I actually finish this one, I'll post. However, I need to plan ahead before I even start. I have the slight problem of this party being too front-line heavy. I'll ultimately have 4-5 front line characters and Imoen. That's Jah, Minsc, Sarevok, my Cleric/Ranger, mystery spot that could be Keldorn with Carsomyr, and Imoen. However, I think this is mostly manageable if part of my front line is on reach/ranged weapons. I can have two on the front with short weapons, and two behind with long weapons that can then be split into two strike teams (one short/long on each).

On one hand, I'm considering considering kitting my C/R to a stalker (like Pearline) and then putting her on staves. On the other hand, for the team, I'm thinking she might be better off on the front with Jah. both will have Ironskins and the C/R will have AoF+DoE. Minsc is an obvious second-liner with two handed swords, bows/axes, and maybe halberds. He can take the gauntlets of Dex (Jah is already at 17 in BG2) and be a solid archer. Keldorn is also 2h swords, but he's getting the Holy Avenger (and Minsc can use Lilarcor for a while). However, Sarveok is also on 2h swords but I figure by that point, there's enough to go around, especially since Keldorn is only using HA, so it's really only two characters fighting over weapons.

So, I need to have Jah on one handed weapons, which is unusual for me. I almost always have her on staves and spears. To be honest, I'm not super impressed with her one handed options and am not sure what to shoot for. I won't get the style proficiency, but I figure she'll be "sword" and board well into SoA. However, her best "swords" are actually daggers (and a dagger with a large shield looks silly). I'm guessing her final setup is Spectral Brand+Belm?

So, yeah, it's looking like Jah (daggers to scimitars) and a C/R (hammers to flails) up front with Minsc juggling 2h swords and halberds, Sarevok on 2h swords (probably Dark Justice), and Keldorn on Carsomyr. Minsc can backup on bow/axe if needed, Keldorn on crossbow, and Sarevok kind of on crossbow?

I dunno, am I missing anything? Am I making a mistake with so much front-line?

Sounds fine to me, although it may be nice to have a backup mage or a dedicated cleric or druid, as multi-class casters gain levels pretty slow.

Annoying as he can be, Anomen is IMHO one of the best NPCs available in the game in terms of power and abilities. He can easily be a frontline fighter, like many NPC's, but what is somewhat unique to him is having a fully loaded spell scroll of cleric spells to back up his fighter abilities. On top of this, he levels quickly, unlike a multi-class character. The only real downsides are his restriction to cleric weapons, somewhat low wisdom (if he passes his test it goes up to 16, though!), and, well, his annoying attitude.

The only other NPC that can do this to an extent is Haer'Dalis. Dual wielding and heavily buffed by his mage spells like Mirror Image and Stoneskins, Haer'Dalis can also be an effective frontline fighter. Don't underestimate his spin abilities either. His main hinderance is a lack of ranged abilities other than his spells.

During SoA, I think you'll need a mage to cast Lower Resistance and Breach during Imoen's down time, unless you choose your battles very carefully and/or rush getting her back.

Keldorn can't get Carsomyr without beating Firkraag, remember. and personally, I always beat him with Lower Resistance and lots of Magic Missiles. I've found front-line classes to be pretty useless against him if I fight him the first time I meet him, and of limited usefulness if I level up first. Breach is also so helpful against his Stoneskins, I hate to think of doing that fight without Breach.

What do you mean? With FoA, the cold and acid damage will get through his stoneskins. At 2 points per round and him having 184hp, I could solo him and put him down in only 92 rounds! :p

But, you have a good point. First, with my double strike team model, it would behoove me to have someone like Nalia or Jan in Keldorn's place. However, that takes the holy avenger out of the mix. The other option is to trade the C/R for a paladin and take that spot myself. Then I would have Jah and Minsc on point, Sarevok and GW on 2h swords for backup, and two mages in the back. I have mixed feelings about a paladin protagonist, though (we saw how Beatrix went). Not that the HA is a gamechanger, but I really hate mage battles in this game and an Inquisitor with a HA would really stick it to them.

I could also just send Sarevok packing (and have Minsc, Jah, Imoen, Nalia, Keldorn, and my C/R), but I've never played with him before. Plus, two paladins is a little redundant.

I feel like I have some tough choices with this party...

Glad to see you planning a run, JustKneller.

BG is pretty forgiving when it comes to party composition. Party decisions are less about what’s workable and more about how you want to play. If your party fulfills your vision of the run, then go with it. If you enjoy your crew enough, you’ll make it work. It’s as simple as that.

Setting aside the all important question of preference, which only you can answer, we can talk about the party from a technical standpoint, if only for the goofy fun of it.

I tend to run parties with the exact opposite structure: heavy on arcane magic, light on warriors. My last party game, an SCS + Ascension no reload on Insane with double damage, featured two sorcerers, Imoen, Aerie and Naila. In SoA we fought in multi-layer Teleport Fields, obviating the frontliner role. In ToB, Aerie led the way. The run failed at the Throne, due to a now patched spawn bug, but prior to that we had suffered no deaths and very nearly no damage in ToB.

That party was highly capable, and it was a pleasure for me to play. For others it could have been a disaster. Not everyone is willing to buff five characters for each and every fight. I wouldn’t recommend that party specifically, but there was a principle of party composition underlying that structure that you may want to consider.

Players often build their party with reference to classical roles. A mage. A cleric. A warrior. A thief. In my view that’s the wrong way to go about it. Those roles are irrelevant. The real question is how are your party members going to be the ones left standing when the dust settles.

From that point of view there are two types of characters: those who can protect themselves and those who need to be protected. My party worked because everyone had an arcane side and was therefore capable of protecting themselves from both weaponry and magic. Further, if they needed a specific protection from Aerie for a particular fight, they could lock it in with SI:A + SS + Spell Protections. That, to my eyes, is balance: balance against all threats.

When I look at your party, I see a lot of characters who need to be protected and no one capable of protecting them. Jaheira, Minsc, Sarevok and Keldorn are all tall folk without arcane levels. Between Jaheira and your C/R you’ll have a decent number of specific protections to go around, but they’ll all be cast by multi-class characters and therefore vulnerable to Remove. You also lack an arcane tank to take heat off the warriors in the truly difficult fights.

If I were running a canon party with a C/R PC, I’d consider something like this:

C/R, Jaheira, Minsc, Imoen, Anomen or Viconia, Haer’Dalis or Aerie

Imoen and Aerie/Haer’Dalis can protect themselves. Your C/R, properly equipped will be self sufficient. Your cleric will have enough slots to take care of Jaheira, Minsc and themselves. Against lesser foes, your fronliners can slug it out. Against tougher ones, your arcane tank can draw aggro and your warriors can flank.

If I wanted to bring Sarevok, I might go with something like this:

F->C, Jaheira, Minsc, Imoen, Sarevok, Aerie or Haer’Dalis

By changing the C/R to an F—>C you free up a slot for Sarevok, while keeping your PC’s playstyle more of less the same. I prefer the first party, personally, but Sarevok does have some interesting dialogue so I understand why people like to bring him along.

In any case, best of luck with your upcoming run! I’m sure you’ll make it work, whatever you choose.

Best,

A.

Amazing post with great insights. To show my thanks, I'm going to barrage you with questions and hypotheticals. :p

I definitely agree that I'm trying to cram too much (muscle) in. Part of my thought was that if I could get all of the vorpal weapons in play, the team could just mow through the opposition. However, that's a real tall order, even with a melee-heavy party.

I suppose my resistance to magic (no pun intended ;)) is that I just don't like its implementation in BG. IWD did a much better job of it. All of the meta-magic in BG2 just feels like doing my taxes. I figured a single mage could eschew blasting and just focus on the arcane accountancy. Though, I do think a second mage/caster would complement two short/long range melee pairs, though.

In any event, I've been giving it a little thought and am considering a different angle. That is, a canon party ONLY run. Other NPCs can come in for their quests, when needed, but it's just going to be the core companions. So, Jah, Khalid, Minsc, Dynaheir, and Imoen for BG1 and just Jah, Minsc, Yosh>Imoen for BG2. The basic plan is to have just GW and Imoen for the brunt of BG1. This will let us level and Imoen dual (at level 6) much quicker. We'll do everything we can non-MQ. Then we'd pick up the pals and get moving on the MQ. I'm hoping that by Cloakwood, Imoen gets her levels back and we're good for a thief from then forward. Then, when we're all wanted for murder, we'll take a breather for DT and WW Isle. In BG2, I would only cover what we need in order to tool up and then head to Spellhold to get Imoen back ASAP. Then we would do the rest of the side content upon return to Athkatla.

I'm considering what GW to throw in with that. Jah will focus on two handers (staves and spears) and Minsc will take the classic FoA+DoE combo

I'm actually kinda leaning towards paladin over a C/R, but I suspect you will think it's too magic-light, even if I have Carsomyr. Anyway, this is where I'm at. What's your analysis, Alesia? :)

Sounds fun!

When I RP runs I like to leave a slot open for guests, especially in SoA. That can be 5 + 1 or 4 + 1.

PC, Jaheira, Minsc, Imoen is a respectable core. Keeping the total number of party members down would help you level up quicker and facilitate concentrating save buff and immunity equipment onto Jaheira and Minsc, the tall folk without arcane levels.

There’s a fundamental difference between how we’re approaching this. Most players focus on how strong their characters will be at their best. They plot out which character will wield which weapon and try to get the game’s best weapons into one hand or another. When I build a party I think about how weak they’ll be at their worst. I don’t really care what weapons my characters have in their hands. There’s no shortage of ways to kill things in this game. I’m more interested in questions like: What happens if we get hit by Remove->Malison->Chaos? What about Remove->Dragon Fear? Remove -> FoD? As long as I can foil the save or else stuff, I’m confident I’ll find a way to kill stuff. Contrariwise, all the vorpal weapons in the game won’t help if my characters are running in fear or succumbing to confusion.

Does your team need more magic, from my point of view? Not necessarily. I’d be content to run with no mages at all. The key variable isn’t whether a character can cast arcane spells or not. It’s whether they can protect themselves from save or else stuff and or if they can be protected. Arcane characters are just one class of character that can protect themselves. Single class clerics are another. Warriors with shorty saves fall into that category, too. A well equipped tall warrior could as well, but if you have too many tall warriors is becomes a problem. And to the extent that I was going to have multiple tall warriors on my squad, I wouldn’t be thinking about who is going to wield Ages or whatever. I’d be deciding who will get the Shield of Harmony, etc.

Here’s an example of a non-arcane party of 5 that I’d be comfortable with.

Halfling F/T, Mazzy, Anomen, Jaheira, Keldorn

The shorties will be able to protect themselves, thanks to their saves and Mazzy’s Sword of Arvoreen. Properly equipped, they’ll be able to make all their saves. PW: S, the remaining vulnerability, can be covered by the Sword of Arvoreen. As long as both don’t drop below 90hp at the same time, they’ll be fine. Moving onto the others, Anomen can protect himself, and has enough slots to protect Jaheira and Keldorn. They should be fine too

Between Keldorn’s abilities, Anomen’s single class dispel dispelling arrows and, later, UAI, arcane protections shouldn’t be a problem. We’ll be weak to melee in ToB and late SoA, since no one can cast ProMW, but we can work around that. In the tightest spots, our PC can use a ProMW scroll.

So, let’s say you go with an Inquisitor PC, Jaheira, Minsc and Imoen.

PC: Your inquisitor will enjoy immunity to Hold and Charm. He can keep Lilacor in one quick slot, Dragonslayer in another, and equip them as needed. His vulnerabilities are Stun and save or else death magics. He can take Death Ward and CC from Jaheira, but that will be cast at a multiclass level. He’ll need to keep potions on hand in case his specific protections are dispelled. When his saves get low enough he can send Lilacor over to Minsc

Jaheira: Jaheira can use the Shield of Harmony. She’ll be vulnerable to Fear, Stun and death magics. She can take DW and CC from her book, at a multi class level. She can take Resist Fear from Imoen. A Remove could put her in danger, so she’ll need to keep emergency potions on hand.

Minsc: Early on we can use Minsc as an off tank and give him Aeger’s Hide. He can keep the Spear of the Unicorn in one of his quick slots. When the PC is ready to give up Lilacor, he can take it and swap out Aeger’s Hide for full plate. That covers Confusion, Charm and Hold. His vulnerabilities are Fear, Stun and death magics. He’ll need Death Ward and CC from Jaheira, Resist Fear from Imoen. Like the others warriors, a Remove could put him in danger he’ll need emergency potions

Imoen: Imoen has arcane levels so she can take care of herself.

That’s not horrible, but it’s a pretty easy party to kill because they’re relying on those multi class CCs and DWs. The mages in your install might not be able to take advantage, but I’d feel vulnerable with that crew. I’d feel better with a single class cleric on the team.

(In general, if I’m going to have two or more tall folk warriors, I’d prefer to have a single class cleric.)

If I wanted to play a cannon party with an Inquisitor PC and a SoA guest slot, I might go with something like this:

SoA: Inquisitor PC, Jaheira, Minsc, Imoen, Viconia, Guest Slot

ToB: Inquisitor PC, Jaheira, Minsc, Imoen, Viconia, Sarevok

Viconia is defensible as a canon pick, even in a good party. Sarevok is a reasonable canon choice for a canon party, too.

Now, could you do fine rolling with an Inquisitor, Jaheira, Minsc and Imoen? Absolutely. There’s no question that could work. I prefer to have my disabler defenses locked down a little tighter, but that group could work, even in a no reload context. In the end, I’d encourage you to go with what feels right. The more connected you feel to your party the better you’ll play. Sound play is the best defense of all.

When I build a party I think about how weak they’ll be at their worst.
I’d feel better with a single class cleric on the team.

I would agree with that logic. When I think about a party, I think, "What's eventually going to TPK me?" The answer is frequently Confusion. I really hate that spell. A paladin is halfway to having shorty saves, all the way if they protect from evil. But really, the R/C would probably be a better match. It's a lot of extra divine magic for the party. They and Jah can CC themselves and Minsc can break out Lilarcor. Yosh can wear Aeger's Hide. That does it for Confusion.

You have me thinking about Jah and one-handers, though, due to the Shield of Harmony (and other good shields, for that matter).

Stun would still be a problem, but I'm not sure what protects against that.

I do like Viconia, but her evil alignment is a bit of a problem. I know that can be managed, but it's a bit of a hassle.

I know you're advocating for a single class cleric, but is a multi R/C in a small party at that big of a disadvantage? In a party of four, it will probably only be a level or two of Cleric behind a single cleric in a party of six, right?

So, looking at this, whoever I take needs to bring Fear, Stun, and Death protection to the table. I feel like Fear is easy enough. A Cav's remove fear is being cast at a relatively high level so that is pretty solid. But what do you do about Stun and Death (aside from Death Ward for the latter)?

Remove Fear covers fear. Chaotic Commands covers Stun. Death Ward covers death magic. A cleric can cover all three. If you romance Viconia she won’t leave because of your reputation. She can also be redeemed.

By the end game a single class cleric will be at L40, a multi class cleric at L23. Against a high level mage that’s the difference between definitely safe and definitely screwed. Earlier the difference is smaller in magnitude, but it’s still significant.

Aside from DW, CC, RF and immunity, your main protections against death magics, Stun and Fear respectively are your saves and potions. I always maintain a stash of potions of magic shielding, potions of invulnerability, potions of stone form, potions of freedom and potions of clarity. That way if I get hit with Remove —> Malison I can drink myself back to safety. If my buff spells are safe from Remove, if I have a complete set of immunity items or if my saves are in the safe zone, I can lead with my aura in combat. If they aren’t, I need to hold my aura in reserve so I’ll be able to deploy potion counters in a timely fashion. Vulnerability to save or else stuff would also influence my PC’s position on the field of combat. If I can count on my immunities I can close with mages. If I can’t count on them I prefer to keep my distance to widen the counter window. Of course if I get Removed too much I’m more likely to run out of my defensive potions.

This page has long been my go to tool for planning parties and characters:

BG Immunity Chart

It’s not 100% accurate now, since it’s based on the original game, sans G3. Take the free action items and Arbane off the Stun list. Remove the Darkmail entries.

To keep things in perspective, these are all fineries which wouldn’t matter to the average player running vanilla with reloads. There’s a reason why most people don’t build their party this way. If you’re playing with reloads it actually does make sense to focus on how strong your characters will be at their strongest because you only need to succeed once. If you’re playing no reload style, in contrast, you only need to fail once. The latter makes the game far, far more interesting in my book.

Once again, you can absolutely 100% succeed with just the canon core and your PC. If that party speaks to you, run with it. All this talk is just a defense oriented player’s theory crafting. Like most theory crafting it’s over kill for most players and most gaming contexts. If it sounds fun to you, give it a go. If not, pass. In the end your enjoyment is the most important thing.

PS: Don’t forget your Insect Plagues. They can bottle up a ton of save or else threats. Note that Insect Plague is a 5 so it competes with CC in your book. A second divine caster can help with that bottleneck.

I'm really appreciating your knowledge here. So much so I'm back for more. :p And, I'm totally cool with overkill. Better overkill than underkill, right?

I think I was misinformed. I thought that all spell effects capped at level 20. So, by way of RM, I had thought the level 23 and level 40 cleric would be equal in that sense. Guess I was wrong?

btw, what do you mean by "lead by your aura"?

You're selling me on the single-classed cleric deal. And, I've always wanted to play with Viconia for the long haul, but the alignment thing had put me off. I suspected breaking for high rep would be put on hiatus if you romance her, but I never do the romances (not a fan of it in video games so I wasn't sure.

Plus, I've heard that a "successful" romance with Viconia ends really badly for her. I heard there was a mod to turn that around, but I couldn't find anything on G3. Are you familiar with it? I would consider playing a male and romancing her if she got a good ending for it.

In any event, the first rule of writing is you gotta be willing to slay your darlings. So, let's say I drop the canon-only party and flesh them out some. And, let's say I can find that mod and subsequently romance Viconia so she sticks around. That gives me:

Minsc
Jah
Yosh>Imoen
Viconia
GW
???

Side note, I was once tempted to take Aerie with this setup and play a male just for the trope of it. However, I figure here, ??? would rotate NPCs for quests, settle on someone, and then become probably Sarevok in BG2. I think Aerie would be a little odd here. As much as I'd like Minsc to have a witch, she's often one of the first people you meet. So, you'd either have to awkwardly avoid the circus, or drop her after and bring her in under leveled after the other characters. Actually, passing on the circus to start isn't a bad idea. In fact, if I want to rush Imoen, I probably should pass on anything that doesn't help this party tool up for spellhold. The circus is kind of a bum deal for rewards.

Ok, so based on your advice, if I'm understanding you correctly, Viconia really covers my party's weak spots, which leaves me wondering about a fitting choice for GW. A paladin romancing Viconia would be ironic. A Cleric/Ranger would add more divine power and tankiness, though. Maybe there's something else I haven't considered? I'm definitely leaning towards some kind of front liner, though, as I'll be doing BG1 for a while with just Imoen and GW. What do you think?

On Spell Level: For the purposes of dispel/remove calculations, the caster’s actual level is used. If you are 5 levels or more above the caster trying to dispel you they have a zero percent chance of success.

On Leading with Your Aura: That’s one of the idiosyncratic phrases I use. Players who’ve been following the NR challenge threads know what I mean by that by now. I tend to assume that everyone does, but most people don’t.

Aura refers to your character’s ability to use a spell equivalent action. Setting aside Improved Alacrity and such, a character can use one spell equivalent action per round. Once a spell equivalent action is active, we say their aura is clouded. That prevents them from using a spell equivalent action again until the round ends. Now, let’s say my character is facing a level 13 unkitted mage. She has the Shield of Harmony in her off hand, Dragonslayer in her main hand and her saves v spells and polymorph are both zero. Our opponent has slots from L1- L6. They therefore have access to the following disabler effects: Fear, Hold, Charm, Confusion, Polymorph and Sleep. The first four are shut down by Harmony and Dragonslayer. As for Polymorph, from Polymorph Other, and Sleep, from Emotion: Helplessness, we are safe from them because of our saves. My character can cast a spell, drink a potion -whatever they like- because they are not currently imperiled. None of our opponents disablers will work right now. They can cast Malison and then follow with, say, Emotion in the next round, but I have a window in which to counter the Malison with a potion of stone form or a potion of invulnerability.

Now, let’s take away that Shield of Harmony, and let’s say I’d like to drink a potion of fire giant strength

PC: Gulp! (potion of fire giant strength)
L13 Mage: Chaos

Do you see it? I just killed myself by drinking that potion. The enemy mage’s Chaos can land before I have another spell equivalent action available to quaff, say, a potion of clarity. That’s what I get for leading with my aura when I am currently vulnerable to a save or else effect. In contrast, if I had recognized my vulnerability, and kept my aura in reserve:

L13 Mage: Chaos
PC: Gulp! (potion of clarity)

I refer to the number of spell equivalent actions required to imperil my character as my Magic Number. Going back to the above example, with the Shield of Harmony, my Magic Number was 1. My enemy would need to land a Malison before I’d be in danger. Without the Shield of Harmony, my Magic Number is zero. They can tag me with Chaos right now. It’s safe to lead with your aura whenever your Magic Number is equal to or greater than the number of spell equivalent action available to your opponent. With one mage, and no Sequencers, Contingencies, etc, a Magic Number of 1 will suffice. With two mages, 2, etc.

On Viconia’s romance. I’ve never done that and I haven’t looked it up. I don’t know how it works.

(The other options would be to keep your rep out of the danger zone or use Anomen instead.)

On Your PC’s Class: Either way! Either way works. As for a paladin romancing Viconia, that sounds like an interesting story. I’m here for it. One of the things I like about the Paladin PC, Minsc, Jaheira, Imoen, Viconia, Guest Slot-> Sarevok setup is that it has great story potential. There’s an excellent mix of personalities, a lot of shared history, and some intrigue potential via the forbidden romance. Sounds fun!

Btw, JustKneller, it’s been ages since I’ve run a canon party. I haven’t done it since before my no reload challenge days, in the early 2000s. This thread has got me thinking about trying it with a Priest of Lathander PC.

If you’re planning on posting your run, I’ll hold off on this, so as not to clutter the forum with two semi-similar parties.

I’m thinking:

SoA: Priest of Lathander, Jaheira, Minsc, Nalia/Imoen, Aerie, Guest

ToB: Priest of Lathander, Jaheira, Minsc, Imoen, Aerie, Nalia

I say go for it. Because my three other runs stalled out, my plan is to actually play the run, take screenshots and notes as I go, then compile it all afterward into a SSLP. Who knows how long that will take.

Also, if you go down that road first and post it. I'll likely end up studying it for my run as I go. :p

FWIW, my party will be a Cavalier, Jaheira, Minsc, Yoshimo>Imoen, Viconia, and Sarevok. I think that's different enough for us to not be stepping on each other's toes.
