Nostalgia and The Bard's Tale...

I started gaming when I was only about 2 years old. My first ever game was called The Bard's Tale. I was too young at the time to understand most of what was going on in the game, so my Mom and Aunt played the game for me while I watched them. They named all the characters in their party after characters from my one of my favorite childhood story settings at the time. I remember I was especially fond of the dragons in that game; so much so that they printed a large size color picture of the dragon icon for me and hung it in the basement (where the computer was at the time) so I could look at it. That picture is still hanging there from all those years ago! I just thought I would share this nostalgia with everyone here. Would anyone else care to share some of their earliest gaming memories?

What a great topic and what a touching story! 2 years, gee! I barely could talk back then!

Our family got their first PC, Intel Pentium 166 MHz, in 1998 when I was in the 3rd grade. There were quite a few games my parents played on it (as at that time, CD discs came with dozens or even hundreds of games on them), but I remember the first game that really impressed me was Dungeon Keeper.

My school lessons that year began at 2 pm so I had "free" mornings while the parents were away at their work. You are guessing correctly if you think I spent these hours in Dungeon Keeper, trying to emulate what my father did and improve on that.

It's very nice that I actually still have this game on my current PC and can launch it. You can get it on Origin.

It's a unique mix of strategy, management game and "god game" genres with a lot of exploration, magic, amazing music and sounds.

I don't have much nostalgia for video games, to be honest. (But I do have a lot of nostalgia for tabletop D&D from the TSR era). There was one video game that did leave a huge impression on me, King's Quest 5. Mostly because of the graphics. I was extremely impressed by the quality of its art.

I started playing games quite late because my family couldn't afford to buy a PC for a long time. I heard about computer games from friends, but I didn't really understand why everyone liked them so much. The first game was gifted to me by a high school friend as a congratulation message on the purchase of a PC. These are pretty good memories for me because my school love opened up a huge and incredible world of video games to me. I really wanted to make an impression and learn how to play my friend’s favorite game as best I could, so I spent a lot of time honing my skills.

The game was Heroes of Might & Magic 2 - a turn-based strategy game in a fantasy setting. Thanks to its turn-based and multiplayer gameplay, HoMM gave me hours of intense battles with friends, discussion of strategy, and laughter. I haven't played it for a long time, but I still have fond memories of it.

I had the good fortune of being raised by a cool dad who let me watch him play games on his old Windows PCs. First, the old floppy disks which contained a variety of fun and interesting games, though the only one I remember in detail was the Oregon Trail. I remember being so invested in whether or not our family would survive the trip to Oregon. Sometimes we did. Most times, not so much.

When the first CDs started coming out, we traded in the floppies for some of those. That was when the world of PC gaming opened up for me. Lords of the Realm, Lords of Magic, MechCommander 1 and 2, Baldur’s Gate 1 and 2, Might and Magic, Jagged Alliance 1 and 2, Diablo 1 and 2. All of them were much cooler looking than Oregon Trail, and very different. But the one thing that never changed was the dynamic of my dad playing games, and little me standing next to him, watching him play, sharing in the challenges, the victories, and the defeats. He would occasionally look to me and ask “How would you do this part?” I would give him my best answer, which at first was usually the wrong one, but as I kept watching the game, and he kept asking for my advice, my answers got better. Eventually, I was genuinely helping him out. :D

When my parents decided I was old enough to play myself, basically when they believed I wouldn’t just break the computer, I got to play these games. I still play most of them to this day. The ones that I don’t are the ones that I can’t, due to them not getting a remastered or “enhanced edition”, and therefore not being playable on modern PCs. I still get that urge, you know? No matter what all the new games of today are like, I still come back to the old ones. They’re just a bit more special than today’s modern graphics and cheesy romances.

Today, while browsing some sites, I've stumbled across this comment: "Origins was what got me into the RPG genre, then I played Mass Effect series followed by Witcher."

And I wonder - what RPG game was the first for you? This thread covers first gaming experiences, so I wanted to ask about RPGs in particular.

For me - and now I understand that 1998 was probably the best year to get into gaming, heh, - the first RPG I saw was Diablo 1. I remember how my father played it. A knight, sword & board style, shiny armor. I remember how scary I became when he first encountered the Butcher, and the game only became harder and harder with each level. At that point, the game seemed so difficult that I didn't even think about trying it myself. But when Diablo 2 came out, we both played it (not together in MP or anything) - we had only 1 PC, so had to play in turns. I still remember Diablo 2 at release, without additional classes and runewords, with very challenging fights in the Hell. These games probably are the reason why I like "darker" tones in games and why I like the hardcore aspect of them.

My first RPG was tabletop D&D, second edition. As for PC games, I think that the first one I played was Moonstone: A Hard Day's Knight. I still play it sometimes, it's a really cool game. Around that time I also got a copy of King's Quest 5. While the latter isn't exactly an RPG, more of an adventure game, it definately left an impression on me. After that, the next one was Ishar 2: Messengers of Doom. And then, Heimdall 2: Into The Hall of Worlds, and also Entomorph: Plague of the Darkfall. I think those were the main ones. But of course, when the Infinity Engine games came out, those quickly became my favorites.

Hmm, for me it would probably be some Atari 65XE old RPGs, which I dont't remember much. Then on Amiga 500 first RPGs I played were Dungeon Master and Ishar. I was blown away. And then it started 😁
