And ... there. A morning session to finish up Normal, and I'm ready to start the tale of Telka. She's the sixth of my Hardcore cycle, which has so far seen three Guardians (assassin Danys, sorceress Cythandria, barbarian Jassar) and two deaths (necromancer Prebek, druid Osmadi).
As I've already mentioned, Telka is an amazon, specialized in the bow with a particular focus on Freezing Arrow. She can benefit from all of the stuff my previous characters in this project have found, and that's a lot. This is the original version of D2 (because Resurrected isn't available on Mac), but with the "runeword mod" enabling ladder runewords in single player and the GoMule program to transfer items around.
Archers are always a little tricky to start with, because it's hard to find a good bow that's usable at a low level. So for Telka, I made one:
That got me through act 1. Not perfect, but I had to work with the jewels I had. Six level 1 jewels, four lowering requirements.
Various set items complemented this, eventually settling on Angelic/Sigon's/Tarnhelm by the end of act 1. That combo stayed for the rest of normal difficulty - nearly 200 MF, plenty of life and mana, +2 skills, fire and cold resistance.
The bow, though, got switched out several times. At level 18, I switched to a rare Edge Bow (1-110 lightning damage). At level 20 and the end of act 1, I switched to a rare Reflex Bow (18-48 damage, with a socket that I put a perfect skull in). When my mercenary reached level 27 for Insight (in an ethereal Partizan), I switched back to the lightning damage bow. Then at level 28, I switched to Skystrike, which lasted through the last bit of act 2 and all of acts 3 and 4.
Most of the time, I attacked with Magic Arrows and the occasional Ice Arrow. Some Strafe was used as well once that skill came available. Skill investment was 1 to each bow and passive skill, with all excess points to Cold Arrow for the synergy value.
Level 30 comes in the Swampy Pit, and that means Freezing Arrow is online. It's absolutely devastating when you get it this early and invest this hard into it, killing entire packs in one or two shots. And since I have six cold damage small charms, it freezes for 8 seconds when it doesn't kill outright.
The only fight that gives me any trouble? Diablo. Archers aren't built for single-target damage, so it drags on for a long time. And he hits hard, easily taking out Waheed before too long. But despite that and excessively sweaty hands, I persevere. Many decoys and Valkyries died for this.
Oh, and the Hellforge gives me an Eld rune. Which isn't all that bad from a certain point of view; it's actually the rarest rune the normal Hellforge can possibly give you.
As I start the act 5 session, I hand Telka a new bow.
She can't use it yet, but she'll get there. Level 35 now, but that will rise rapidly. Indeed, level 42 comes in the Frozen River, and Telka equips her new bow when she returns to town to complete the rescue.
I don't take on Nihlathak right away after that, instead pushing forward to the Frozen Tundra waypoint before entering his temple. He's no threat at all when you freeze all of his minions and deny any corpses. Telka claims the reward right away:
Yeah. She's sticking with this bow for good.
Finally, I took on Baal this morning.
Telka makes Destroyer at level 48. 132 arrows spent on the Baal fight. Then she goes back for cows and a second Baal run, finishing up Normal difficulty at level 49. Everything was done at players 8 except the Ancients, and it's all single-pass except for that post-Destroyer session.
Telka only found one new item in all of normal difficulty: ethereal Twitchthroe. Since Waheed was using a non-ethereal Twitchthroe at the time, he upgraded immediately. Plenty of other unique and set items were found, but I had them already in my HC stash.
Telka also overhauled her equipment for Nightmare, swapping out everything but the bow and helm. She'll use a rare amulet (+1 amazon skills, +15 all resist), Skin of the Vipermagi (+24 all resist), a Stone of Jordan, a Raven Frost, rare gloves (+2 passive skills, +20 IAS, +24 poison resist), Razortail, and Infernostride. Not much magic find, but her resistances are solid, she has +8 to both kill trees she uses, and she has 100% pierce on her arrows. Nightmare shouldn't be much trouble with that.
