Another Reboot Thread to another thread I had on the Beamdog Forums.

Here's the Recap: What are things you always or almost always do every time you do a run regardless of what class, race or alignment you might be playing. I'll list a few for myself

1. Killing everyone in the Temple of Umberlee in Baldur's Gate (Good characters for the murder of an innocent child, Evil characters for daring to insult us and using the death of an innocent child as an excuse to murder them)
2. Making the Copper Coronet my Inn of Choice for Baldur's Gate 2
3. Farming Mutamin's Garden for EXP
4. Hunting down all the Stat Tomes in BG1

Hi Zaram, I think it would be helpful to edit your thread title (you can then before saving even tick the box "edit silently" and it will look like new) and add something that makes it obvious you're talking about Baldur's Gate.
I know you have come over from the Beamdog Forum like several others, but we're an independent and privately run forum and discussing a variety of games, so it might not be obvious to others which game the thread is about.

The Sea's Bounty! That's full of pirates and thieves. Slavers, too: Officer Dirth and Baron Ployer both hang out there. Gross.

The Five Flagons has a playhouse, a painting of Elvis and -in case you haven't heard- every flavor of beverage available for your perusal. There's no comparison. Flagons wins, with ease.

For some reason in my headcanon I see Neera as being somewhat open to Poly or ENM but the others? I don't think so lol.

I don't know about Aerie, but Jaheira is a druid and believes in balance and nature, Viconia is a drow and they aren't exactly known for their conservative family lives, so while they maybe wouldn't get along with each other, I doubt they'd have a problem with the concept in general.

On topic: Recruiting Jaheira. I just couldn't play BG2 without her. The only time I did was when a vampire chunked her in Waukeen's Promenade at night on a minimal reload, and I almost dropped the run because of it.

Well, my next planned big run will be paladin-themed (actually a LG cleric->fighter dual as protagonist, but that's close enough). And they're not going to go shoplifting or robbing houses. Definitely going against my usual tendencies, but I can do self-imposed rules.

Romancing all the ladies in each playthrough. Don't look at me like that! I just can't stand seeing them unhappy! :p
When it comes to multiple romances, I prefer a trickier solution. Like my last big run, in which my protagonist Dorn romanced both Viconia and Anomen. No mods needed for that, just careful planning around the protagonist switch that the run required. And hey - once he ascends to being the new god of murder, his two clerics can hook up with each other.

The Copper Coronet, really? That place is sleazy, even after the Hendak take over. I'm a Five Flagons girl, through and through.
The Copper Coronet has an important mechanical advantage: it's closer to the area's entrance than the other inns in Athkatla. You practically always enter the slums from the south, and the Copper Coronet is right there. The Five Flagons is halfway down the bridge, and Delosar's Inn is even further - though that makes it closer to the exit you'll leave by. The Sea's Bounty is down on the lowest level of the docks, and you start at the top. The Mithrest Inn and the Den of the Seven Vales are up some stairs in the Promenade, far from any map edge.

Basically, choosing anything other than the Copper Coronet costs you time, every time you go there. It adds up.

There's only one other inn in Athkatla that's actually close to the map entrance: the Crooked Crane. And if you went there, you'd literally be sleeping in the stables. Also, no shop for trading items, and no containers except in the lich lair.

Pickpocket the Ring of Regeneration from Ribald in the Adventurers' Mart after escaping Chateau Irenicus (even if I'm playing a Paladin!). It's just too useful to simply leave it in the pocket of a simple merchant...
Just watch out. No matter how far you push your skills, picking pockets has a 1% critical failure chance. If you're playing a no-reload, that's a 1% chance of offending Ribald and permanently losing access to his store. (No critical failure for shoplifting, though.)

Trying to not go flails for melee, seeking diversity, but caving in the end...
The Flail of Ages is just too good to ignore, isn't it? And since none of the companions you can recruit have any proficiency in flails, it almost always makes more sense to give it to your protagonist than any of the other party members.
Though my last few runs ... "Dorn It" - Protagonist Dorn sticks with big swords (long, bastard, 2H), and the only other fighter is Korgan with axes and hammers. Viconia gets the FoA. "Kill It With Fire" - Protagonist is a Dragon Disciple that can't use flails. Isra (mod NPC Cavalier) gets the FoA once she has specialization at level 18. "Wee Cant Spell" - Protagonist is a Fighter/Thief who sticks to backstab-capable weapons. Mazzy gets the FoA as her melee option, though she's primarily an archer for most of the game.
So that's three runs in a row in which I've used the Flail of Ages somewhere in the party other than on the protagonist. The next one will break that streak, though - that character'll be a prime flail user.

Good point, jmerry. And yes, I've long felt that was an advantage of the Copper. It also has a discount merchant, along with a consistently available identifier, assuming you haven't delayed the arrival of Joluv. It is practical.

It's still sleazy and unpleasant, lol. The Flagons is worth the effort, especially for my Halfling characters. They feel more at home there. Proximity to Cragmoon is also appreciated.

EDIT: For giggles I did some trials, clocking the time from the edge of a neighboring district to initiating conversation with the proprietor.

Copper Coronet Entrance 1: 31.31 seconds
Copper Coronet Entrance 2: 18.42 seconds
Five Flagons Inn: 39.64 seconds

Interestingly, the difference between the two Copper Coronet entrances is greater than the difference between Copper 1 and the Five Flagons.

Assuming 10 visits in a game -and no movement rate bonuses- you'd save a total of seven minutes by visiting the Copper via entrance 2, versus the Five Flagons Inn. Choose as you will, fellow adventurers, but Halfling hospitality, a nearby potion seller and a painting of Elvis are worth seven minutes of my time. Plus, Biff the Understudy is seriously underrated. The boy has talent. You can see it. All he needs is a little seasoning.
