[Forum Game, finished] Dear guests and residents, beware of the hills north of the Tavern!

After our recent experience with the giant rats in the basement, I decided to explore the area to the north of our Tavern a bit more thoroughly. After all, this place has been built very recently and we still need to establish a secure perimeter and make sure the roads are reasonably safe for travelers. Most of them approach from the other direction, and I was wondering why.

Gathering some berries, nuts and mushrooms (mind you, I checked to make sure they're not sentient first, of course) for the kitchen, I didn't pay much attention to the road. After all, why be overly careful if I assume I'm the most dangerous creature out there at the moment?
After about two hours walk straight uphill, the road bent around a large boulder and I suddenly found myself facing a tower ruin.

There was no sign of bipedal creatures, and half of the tower was gone, but the fence was still intact and the ground showed traces of wagon wheels and footprints. Not fresh, but no older than a month either.

I remained quiet and observant for a few minutes, and when nothing rustled or moved, I decided to take a closer look at the tower. From the sheer size of the damage, I would have expected a dragon or perhaps magic, but there were no scorch marks to be seen, and we would certainly have felt an earthquake or similar forces strong enough to bring down a massive stone tower only two hours away.
So I climbed up on the lower part of the remaining walls and this was the view from there:

The way the parts of the walls are tossed around there looks rather deliberate, not like the result of a natural fall. That's when I noticed movement out of the corner of my eyes. When I looked straight at it, it stopped, but I'm sure it wasn't my imagination. Do you see the three trees in the upper left corner of the image? See how they are frozen in an unusual position, as if suddenly stopped in the middle of a step?

They were quite big, too, and the forest around me was full of similar trees, so I decided to back off instead of getting closer. Natural curiosity has its limits. Better safe than sorry.

On my way downhill, it was getting darker, and when I reached the bend in the road again, I was facing this!

rsz_rsz_1trees-min.jpg

The road was blocked, and those huge trees, covered in dark, shimmering ivy, were looming over me, waving their branches, creaking in a menacing way.
Now I'm no coward, but I heard roots ripping up the ground behind me, so I charged through a gap in the underbrush and ran as fast as I could, until I reached the end of the forest, and then some more. In the bushy grassland covering the lower hills, I finally stopped to catch my breath and look behind me.
I saw a few dark trees retreating from the edge of the forest, wavering up the slopes of the largest hill that hides the destroyed tower.

Now, my good friends and our estimated visitors, believe me or not, this is what I saw this afternoon. I'm not an expert, I don't know if those were Ents, Treants, or something else entirely, and I can't say for certain if they destroyed the tower and if it was still inhabited at that point. What I know is that they seemed to be rather territorial, so I suggest avoiding that area unless you have a very good reason, and if necessary only go there under very good disguise or venture out in groups of three at least.
We might also want to use other sources of firewood.

And if anyone has more knowledge of these creatures, their behaviour, or even a means of communication with them, I would appreciate advice how to further investigate and handle this situation. We must evaluate a potential threat, ensure the safety of our guests, but also try to establish good relations to any sentient species in our neighbourhood.

It definitely sounds like something worth investigating. Maybe that tower has a cellar or a basement. There could be something of value hidden there.
I don't know how to talk to trees, unfortunately. But perhaps they would appreciate a friendly song? Some folks say that music is the universal language. Be that as it may, I agree that we should assemble a party for this task. It could be too dangerous for a lone individual.

Treants are chaotic good (source) so we shouldn't be afraid to explore the area because of those trees alone.

That's reassuring. Then we can probably assume they didn't attack the tower, but were either searching for something or acting in self defense.

And their reaction towards me might not have been hostile after all. I may have misinterpreted their body language, perhaps they were just trying to communicate.

(offers a handful of the gathered berries to the ferret)
@Nimran , calm down. That shrub is too small to be a threat. You might consider giving it back, though.
And maybe you would like to join an expedition? You're small, fast, an excellent pickpocket, you'd be the perfect scout.

@m7600 , you have suggested singing to the trees if necessary, are you a bard then? Any other skills? Of course you're welcome no matter what you can do, it only would be helpful to know in advance.

@Antimatter , you seem to have access to lore and might have other powers we don't know about yet?

I'm curious to find out more about that tower, to explore it and make First Contact with those Treants, if that's indeed what they are.

So, is there anyone else interested in an expedition there? Then please share your ideas how we should proceed!

(OOC: I simply felt like spinning a little story when I saw those trees on a walk yesterday, but if anyone is interested in turning this into a little game, I'm all ears for suggestions)

Indeed, the bardic arts are my bread and butter. That being said, my skills are far from being sophisticated. But it is my hope that one day, after much learning and practice, perhaps I will become as talented as the great performers that I admire. It won't be easy, but I'll certainly try to get there!

As for other skills, I suppose that I can say that I'm no stranger to the fighting arts, though they are not exactly my forte.

If these are indeed Treants, I suppose we could plant a few acorns into the ground to demonstrate our peaceful intentions, or disguise ourselves as rather large squirrels to pass them by safely. Or the third, riskiest option: we can try showing them a couple of pictures from the botany textbook, the pollination section, and hope they run away blushed with embarrassment (can Treants blush?).

(OOC: Great photos! The last photo looks like a romanticism painting coming to life (Seriously, I didn't even know trees could be that fluffy!))

Those are great ideas, why not do all of it?
Disguise as big squirrels (do we have a mage here who can cast illusions? I think I'm too big to pass for a squirrel even when dressed up as one), plant some acorns to show we come in peace, but take the botany textbook with us as last resort for desperate moments? (Personally, I think showing them pollination pictures is the most creative and funny idea to deal with the Treants, but I'm not sure if it will be considered culturally offensive)

Maybe our bard could sing while we plant the acorns?
We should still be prepared for whatever expects us in and around that tower, though, so I'd like to wait if someone else wants to join us.

The botany book idea is the best plan so far, I say we go with that. Just in case, I've prepared a song to enhance its effect:

Oh great Treants, please take a look
At the contents of this scandalous book
Do these images of pollination
Showcase your customs of fertilization?

I heard Alice the Githyanki Priestess of Vlaakith (disguised as @alice_ashpool) might know a thing or two about magic, so hopefully she doesn't have Illusion as a restricted School.
@Antimatter , you seem to have access to lore and might have other powers we don't know about yet?
One power is certain - there is a risk of an explosion when matter and antimatter meet. Now when I look at the tower ruin, I don't remember visiting that place, but the damage looks severe...

Hmmm... I hadn't considered that. Highly improbable though, as you're not generally known for leaving behind a trail of destruction. I still think the most likely explanation is that something or someone made the Treants really, really angry and defensive, or another invisible force was at work. Or maybe our dragon @Xzarloxara invited a friend or relative, they forgot how big they are, and simply tried to land there to enjoy the scenery?

Alice the Githyanki priestess, good idea. @alice_ashpool , are you game?
Maybe we don't even need illusions if we plant the acorns and use the botany book while our bard sings his song. If the Treants let us pass, we can then explore the tower ruin and its basement. I'm curious what we will find there, so let's gather our party and venture forth!

Our bard @m7600 seems to be an excellent observer as well as a keeper of lore and spinner of stories. He was able to shed some light on the disappearance of the Rogue Stone and uncovered a possible connection to the Treants.
Very impressive. And a Krogan battlemaster knows who is worthy of being followed. (bows respectfully)

So, our estimated bard and new friend, would you agree to take over and lead our little expedition, to find out what mystery is going on here?

Oh, I'm not much of a leader, just a humble entertainer. But, I suppose I could take the lead for this one mission, if that is what the group wishes. I'll gladly step down from that position after we've solved this mystery. Let us venture forth, then!

OOC: This is so really cool, to be able to play in the first Tavern PnP adventure.

According to Bernard M. Oliver (a scientist from the US), antimatter is not a source of energy, it's a method of storing energy, compact but inefficient.

Maybe you can try using that ability of mine for short rests?

Why don't you people just ask the Druids? There must be a circle somewhere close...
Unless you offended the local druidic circle. Then be afraid...
I wonder, is it a coincidence an Alien constantly mentions circles?

I'm big and strong, I can carry all the heavy equipment we might need. Can also carry some of you fragile creatures when necessary.
Not sure if you trust me carrying our food and water supplies. Apparently someone has been putting up posters warning people of my tasty, wholesome and warming drinks. You can even clean your weapons with them.

Apart from that, I can follow tracks reasonably well, and my thick hide can take quite a bit of damage, but I hope we won't need much of that.

Who else is coming?

I better go otherwise you primitives will be shooting anything that moves instead of asking questions to those who certainly know what happened.
