Trying to control the battlefield is very important, but of course in some cases you will have to know or at least predict how your opponents might react. It's hard to be prepared for teleportation without metagaming, for example. Or for a dragon's wing buff if you haven't fought one before.

This is a fine line with metagaming that I walk. I really try to not pre-buff/pre-position unless it's obvious an enemy lies ahead. And if it's not obvious, I always make sure to have my thief get eyes on it first to get myself some justification for pre-positioning. You'll notice in the Saladrex fight I kind of sacrificed Sarevok, because I thought I should scout to see the dragon first instead of just prepping for a battle--even though I as the player knew I would be fighting him. For the Seal battles in WK...the info you get when you click on the seal says something about being prepared for enemies that may come....I took that as a non-metagame indicator that enemies would be teleporting in, much like the colored ball altar to the west, so I thought it was fine to keep my non-tanks far away.

Demogorgon too, I really should have rested before ever entering his lair, but for RP reasons I went down when I wasn't prepared, aggroed him, and then killed the mariliths so I would have to fight the Glabrezus. I knew this wasn't the most advantageous thing to do...but ehh, I play on core so the random gimpings I give myself from roleplay/non-metagaming give me weird new challenges everytime.

I also think some level of PC knowledge of general monster attacks makes sense, from growing up in Candlekeep. E.g., vampires level drain, mind flayers use psionic attacks, dragons use their wings, etc. The fact that Demogorgon is immune to level 6 spells and below? Should the PC know that? Well that's more the "fine line" I'm talking about. I guess the ideal is that you figure out all immunities of a boss, retreat, then come back prepared. But that's not possible for some (most?) bosses, so at some point you need to progress in the game haha.

And yeah, Berserker Rage doesn't protect from everything. And while it's obvious and quickly discovered that Remove Fear and Chaotic Commands are incredibly important (and last a lot longer than Rage) it usually takes a few frustrating instant kills to realize the same is true for Death Ward.

I'd recommend using Chaotic Commands and Remove Fear almost permanently on your main, so that you don't need to waste a rage ability for every Umber Hulk or such that you come across.

I've been using all my Rages, then when spent, have Jaheira (*Edit* What??) Viconia cast Chaotic Commands on me. Yeah maybe I should have been doing that in reverse. Mostly big boss fights only remaining anyhow.

*Dust-blowing noises* *...dust-blowing noises continue* Well, it looks like I’m going to pull this thread all the way from its peaceful resting place on Page 7 to the front for a moment. As I’ve been doing with Baldur’s Gate since it’s been out, I go away for a little while, come back, go away, etc. So I’m returning for a bit…maybe only a few months this time, but we’ll see. I’m glad to see the place is still active, and in fact much more so than last time I was posting! In any case, I have no less than two characters in Throne of Bhaal right now, so feels right to finish out one of those guys.

So, I’m coming back to Ethal Jo. I remember being very frustrated with the status of my Cleric/Mage run, so the Chaotic Evil Berserker it is. I started this character back in early 2021, then played him some more in the fall of 2021 into 2022. Obviously there’s a lot of content here if anyone’s interested, but the quickest recap to catch up is on the top of Page 4 of this thread. Essentially he’s not so much of a “bash first, ask questions second” character as he is a “bash first, bash second, bash third, at some point maybe remember he had a question” character. My party is Viconia, Edwin, and Sarevok, who has been dualed into a thief; we just defeated Demogorgon in Watcher’s Keep, and we’re headed south to Amkethran.

(Also going to try a day-by-day logging format, vs. the hourly time stamps–which I found on re-read to be not quite doing what I wanted. And probably less photos as well; all the photo formatting and uploading was a real motivation-suck for me.)

[Day 67]

We left Watcher’s Keep in the early afternoon. My blasted planar portal won’t cooperate and send me straight to Amkethran. Since there’s no urgent siege I’m expected to break there, the Solar apparently can’t care less. That means we’ll be traveling by foot.

Following the river south for the rest of the day, we arrived at the remnants of Yaga-Shura’s siege camp around 10 o’clock and made camp for the night.

[Day 68]

We continued to travel by foot south to Amkethran when we woke, entering the desert passage mid-morning and walking through searing heat for most of the day.

Soon before sundown, we were ambushed in a desert oasis by a veteran contingent of Tethyrian soldiers. There is a bounty on our head–this one is hundred thousand gold pieces, finally a respectable amount at least. I am being blamed for the sacking of Saradush. Foolish of course, since Yaga-Shura’s army was far from subtle. After we defeated the Tethyrians in battle, of course I find a note in the boss’s possession direct from the Queen herself. She admits she’s just looking to slay any Bhaalspawn she can find, and it looks like blaming me for Saradush is the easiest way to do it. Hmph–Zaranda Rhindaun. She just made herself a powerful enemy.

072123A.jpg

We made camp shortly after the encounter, first having to dispatch of a pack of trolls and a pack of Ruhk that must have been nearby in the oasis. We will plan to arrive in Amkethran mid-day tomorrow.

Chapter 9

[Day 69]

We left the oasis camp before dawn and arrived in Amkethran just before noon. There’s no Melissan here, but we meet the village’s boss, Balthazar. I don’t trust him one bit, but not much to be done about it right now. It does indeed look like I’m right in the midst of the surviving Bhaalspawns’ realm of influence–those that are hunting me down and trying to kill me. Looks like I’ll be paying them a visit sooner or later, but I’ll re-supply and rest in this beaten down village first.

Amkethran was crawling not just with Balthazar’s monk followers, but a small mercenary army as well. It looks like they’re taking advantage of the townsfolk, the way a roving mercenary army would. I ran into a couple of them about to execute the supposed mayor’s daughter. Didn’t care much one way or the other, but the mayor promised me a magical item if I helped out. This far into exotic regions, I thought it a good gambit. Not to mention I had quickly developed the urge to smash some of these mercenaries’ skulls to let them know quickly that Ethal Jo is not to be trifled with.

072123B.jpg

072123C.jpg

So I got into a scuffle and killed a few mercenaries–then, a short time later in the smuggler’s cave, I killed some of these backwater monks while I was just looking to participate in some honest trade. Luckily for the rest of the army of lackeys, they don’t seem to want to threaten me anymore.

Also found out about some undead nonsense having to do with a traveler named Marlowe. I felt this should be resolved before I set out for any Bhaalspawn–so I ended up killing the lich. Marlowe, having lied to me in order to use me, and having brought this whole accursed mess onto himself in the first place, had no option but to die as well. Sadly he was indeed living in squalor and his dwelling had few treasures to offer.

072123D.jpg

072123E.jpg

By then, it was early evening. We transported ourselves to the Abyssal plane to rest for the night. Before turning in for the night, I spent some time crafting items with Cespenar and organizing my treasures in my newly purchased Bag of Holding.

[Day 70]

We set off for Sendai’s Enclave in the dark early morning, arriving there before mid-day. We’ll see how hard it is to root out this Bhaalspawn…

My current party is:

Ethal Jo, Level 32 Berserker (Crom Faeyr and Runehammer)
Sarevok, Level 17 Fighter>Level 20 Thief
Viconia, Level 31 Cleric
Edwin, Level 25 Conjurer

[Day 70 Continued]

As we approached Sendai’s territory, it’s clear they were expecting me. Without asking many questions, packs of Drow and their pets tried to ambush me in Sendai’s name, but I plowed through them and found the entrance to her headquarters. I spent most of the day battling my way farther in.

By late evening, I had destroyed duergar berserkers, a spider hive, more Drow than I could count, umber hulks, the Ogremach, and legions of other beasts. Sendai, whoever she thinks she is, is no match for me. After destroying her illithid high officer I kept pushing forward, eventually storming her in her inner lair. After an entire day of battle, however, our psychic defenses were wavering, most of our spells at been cast, and I was too spent to become enraged for battle. Sendai, shocked that we were able to crush her defenses so easily, began to attack us–but I was able to transport us to my Pocket Plane swiftly.

I crafted some items with Cespenar, including affixing my offhand Runehammer with the Rune of Clangeddin, before we set up camp for the night. In the morning, I plan to kill Sendai as we drop back into her lair.

[Day 71]

When the morning came, we indeed slew Sendai in an extended battle. Moments after her death, the Solar snatched me away again. This time, she spoke of my destiny to kill the other Bhaalspawns and prevent whatever they’re trying to do–the reason for my existence, she even says as much. Ha! I’ll determine my purpose. I don’t like being used for any type of mystical invocations–BUT these Bhaalspawn have decided they want to kill me, so their fate is sealed, regardless if it is written in some cult-priest’s prophecy. So, for the time being at least, my goals align with the Solar.

After finishing our battle with the remaining Drow in Sendai’s dungeon, we journeyed back south to Amkethran with the intention of selling the magical wares we had looted. We were done with our trading by mid-afternoon, and seeing no reason to linger, headed east to confront this Bhaalspawn Abazigal.

[Day 72]

We traveled east past midnight and into the early morning. In the dark hours, we arrived at Abazigal’s enormous, monolithic temple structure. Sensing more bloodshed to come very soon, we ported back to the Pocket Plane and rested into the late morning.

When we returned, we were greeted by Draconis, apparent heir to Abazigal. After destroying his human form, he turned into a dragon. Ah, this Bhaalspawn Abazigal is actually a dragon. I understand the size of the lair now. No matter–I’ve slain more dragons than I can remember. And while I’m enraged, and Edwin has cast Improved Haste on me, and I’m using my critical strike ability to its maximum–it takes something godlike to even challenge me. I fear no Bhaalspawn.

Screenshot 2023-08-02 at 2.56.13 PM.jpeg

[Does anyone else have the problem with Draconis that when he morphs into his dragon form, any characters you had standing close to him are now STUCK in his circle? I.e., not able to move, retreat, run, position, anything (although you can attack and use other skills). It’s very frustrating. Normally I use the console to just teleport out, but I hadn’t activated it since I re-downloaded BGEE. I consider this a very technical/glichy/not-my-fault issue, so I’m not counting it as a reload. I was actually able to beat him the second time while still stuck in his circle without the console activated (still forgot I had to activate it.]

Again, I found myself slaughtering the armies of another Bhaalspawn. I encountered a green guardian dragon under some kind of spell, but not aggressive at first. It didn’t matter, I slew the wyrm Fil’Yissetat and took its wardstone.

Screenshot 2023-08-02 at 5.05.25 PM.jpeg

I had to traverse the lair through underwater tunnels, but fortunately I had acquired the magical means to do so. At some point in the depths of the place, I encounted Iycanth the Mad, a supposed wizard of Abazigal. In our battle, Sarevok was turned to stone by one the mage’s floating eyeball servants. Unluckily for Sarevok, that wasn’t the end of the battle for him. His statue was near the detonation point of a fireball of some kind, and the heat crumpled his stone form into a thousand pieces. Ugh, the fool! With no way to resurrect my half-brother now, I’ll have to dredge up thief skills from somewhere else.

Screenshot 2023-08-02 at 5.34.03 PM.jpeg

[Ouch! Sarevok perma-death! I was one level away from getting Thief HLAs for him…]

[Day 72 Continued]

With Sarevok gone, we continued to travel through the rest of Abazigal’s lair. I had already defeated most of the hostile creatures outside Abazigal’s den with a final battle against some Beholders and Elder Orbs in which Edwin needed resurrection shortly after. I also ended up freeing some other adventurers from a fate of entrapped stone form. I didn’t quite trust them–any moving thing down here has a good chance to be an enemy trap, after all. But I staid my warhammer as the whelps didn’t seem exactly threatening, and I had the artifacts I wanted already.

With the wardstone and the scroll of reversal, we were able to enter the dragon’s lair freely–however, some magic prevented us from leaving the same way, as the beast presumably lurked nearby. So I teleported to my Pocket Plane. There, to replace the Bhaalspawn I just lost, I recruited another: Imoen. She’s a thief, so she’ll be able to detect traps and open locks if I need those skills–filling that portion of Sarevok’s role, at least. And I’ve known the girl my entire life. She is prone to running away and abandoning me if the current conflict doesn’t suit her, so I can’t really trust her for long. But for the time being, she seems like she’ll stay in the group to support our cause–it’s better than wasting her days away in my abyssal realm, where I’ve had her stay put for almost a fortnight now.

By the time Imoen was equipped in our party’s gear, it was already the later evening. We made camp, eager to face Abazigal tomorrow.

[Day 73]

In the early morning, we returned to the Bhaalwyrm’s lair and slew the power-hungry fool. He was strong–but no match for me.

Screenshot 2023-08-08 at 3.24.45 PM.jpg

Screenshot 2023-08-08 at 3.39.43 PM.jpg

[RELOAD #?: Abazigal killed me. The problem I think was he turned into his dragon form too close to the entrance where my party was. The dragon would cast that AOE lightning skill and I couldn’t get any spells off–Protection from Electricity, Heal, Time Stop, all kept getting interrupted. Imoen got fried into unresurrectability, but my PC eventually got killed as well.]

Following my killing of another Bhaalspawn, the Solar transported me to my Plane away from time. These southern fools–”the Five”, including Balthazar–were conspiring all along to resurrect Bhaal himself and take his power, killing all the other Bhaalspawn in the process. These bastards have already tried to kill me, so I can’t just turn back north and run away from them. My role in the so-called prophecy, supposedly, is to kill THEM first, and Bhaal too if need be. Fine. The Solar may even be helping me get there, as frustrating as she is.

On the way out of the dungeon, I ran into the old fool Elminster, stalking me as always. He told me that Saemon Havarian has the means to get into Balthazar’s stronghold. We’re going to head back west to Amkethran immediately.

When we finally returned there by the evening, the entire mercenary army and monk contingent were openly hostile–yes, it looks like Balthazar, the Solar, Bhaal himself–all are giving me no choice but to slay and slaughter. I found Saemon Havarian in the Smuggler’s Cave, and he led me to Faheed, who had a key to sneak into Balthazar’s fortress. While fighting this “Battle of Amkethran” in the streets, however, one of the monks must have dropped the key to the front gate. I found it, and decided to barge in the front entrance instead.

[RELOAD #?: One of the Monks got my PC with a deathblow of some kind during the Battle of Amkethran. Must have failed the save or something, because it was like an unexpected insta-death. It was my own fault, though. I was using weird tactics (Grease for some reason…), not really paying attention, and should have been Enraged and using summons, both of which I imagine would have helped.]

When the battle eventually died down, the bodies of Balthazar’s forces lined the streets. But, my spellcasters were spent, and the night was rolling in. Balthazar wants to face me–wants to kill me–so he’ll wait, bunkered in his little temple. I’m going to teleport to my Pocket Plane and make camp for the night.

[Day 74]

In the early morning hours, I stormed Balthazar’s stronghold and killed him. Swiftly and brutally. Another Bhaalspawn, another plot to have me killed. He learned the lesson everyone else before him did…and with that, the Five that plotted against me have now been utterly destroyed.

Screenshot 2023-08-08 at 6.11.23 PM.jpg

Screenshot 2023-08-08 at 6.15.57 PM.jpg

I realize now Melissan the witch was controlling these machinations from the beginning–the very beginning, when Bhaal was struck down all those years ago. Her plot was always to kill all the Bhaalspawns roaming Faerun, to concentrate the god’s power and steal it for herself. Seems that only me and Imoen are left. So yes, she means to kill me–so it looks like I’ll have to kill her first.

It looks as though the only way to face her will be through my abyssal plane, so I first had to overcome all of the Solar’s various challenges. I fought the Slayer, then servants of Cyric, then the Ravager, and defeated all of them. The Ravager killed both Viconia and Imoen, but I resurrected the women before the morning was through.

Screenshot 2023-08-08 at 9.48.20 PM.jpg

We rested into the early evening, allowing the spellcasters to sleep to regain their spells and for myself to heal fully. But by that point, we were itching for action. This Pocket Plane has run its course, and I could think of nothing more I wanted to do than to crush this final enemy and put this Bhaal nonsense behind me, one way or the other. My “father” and his cultists have done nothing but antagonize me for longer than I care to remember, and their defeat has been long coming. Melissan will be destroyed.

Chapter 10

I plunged into the true Abyssal Realm, knowing I might be facing my most difficult challenge yet. And truly, the battle was legendary. It continued through multiple phases, as Amelyssan was able to run, hide, and recharge herself many times…but we maintained enough spells and combat skills throughout the fight that the witch was brought down in the end. We exhausted our possible uses of Simulacrum, making the most use of our limited spells. Improved Haste was likely the most important; my berserker and advanced fighter skills led the rest of the way, full of rage, exceptional hardiness, and critical striking. Of course the Breaches, Summoned creatures, Remove Magic castings, and the like were all crucial as well…that’s why I have a pair of mages in my party. Imoen was killed at some point during the fight, but I resurrected her before we gave Amelyssan the death stroke.

[RELOADS #?: Well, I was doing ooookay since I came back from my hiatus, only two reloads…but this final battle didn’t go as smoothly. By my count, I had three reloads in the second round, two in the third round, and two in the fourth round, for seven total (all PC deaths of course). Most of the time I want to say it had to do with problematic positioning wherein I felt compelled to fight the summoned enemies, allowing chunks of time for Amessylan to not be engaged. I’d say that was the throughline for most of those deaths. I only had one tank, after all. BUT it’s done now thankfully.]

I am now presented with the possiblity of taking Bhaal’s power for my own, and ascending to his Throne–providing me more power than anything I could grasp in the mortal realm. Hmph! Unexpected to fall into my lap like this, without the complicated murder cults and divine invocations I’ve seen in the past.

So yes then–this was always meant to be my destiny. It would now be folly to think otherwise. I was unstoppable as a mortal, and I’ve always shown that my siblings were simply pale imitations of me, leaving them all in a wake of blood. This Throne is mine for the taking, so that is exactly what I will do. I will retain the essance of Bhaal that is my right and become a power of the planes!

Screenshot 2023-08-15 at 2.54.41 PM Large.jpeg

My final party was:

Ethal Jo, Level 36 Berserker (Crom Faeyr and Runehammer)
Viconia, Level 37 Cleric
Imoen, Level 7 Thief>Level 17 Mage
Edwin, Level 28 Conjurer

[Well, there you have it. Started with Ethal Jo in 2021 and it's been an evil, chaotic ride since then. Since I had been off BG for so long (maybe one day I'll look into BG3 lol), and I decided to jump back right in the midst of TOB, I do appreciate I had a Berserker. Besides the class abilities and invulnerabilities, he had very good stats and very good gear, so I know some of the challenges of the final battles wouldn't be there (tank staying alive, not doing enough DPS, etc.). Losing Sarevok was very annoying, he would have been a great second tank for Abazigal and Amelyssan, but ended up doing it with just the PC, albeit with reloads.]

[I wasn't tracking reloads until midway in BG2, but since then it was 25 total. So at least 25 alternate universes where someone other than Ethal Jo takes the Throne of Bhaal. But this thread is for that 26th universe! I'll likely update the TOB Summary page on the top of pg. 4 soon...but after that, I probably will jump into a brand new character for a few weeks!]

@Antimatter Thank you! Yeah it's good to wrap up another campaign. I had another couple hours to reflect, I'd say my main take home messages from this run were the following:
  • Berserker is a powerful class. Enrage makes many encounters trivial thoughout the saga.
  • I understand now why many powergaming campaigns are all about getting the best loot as soon as possible and developing your character around what weapon you eventually want them to use. With Crom Faeyr and Runehammer, I felt unbeatable in many encounters.
  • Playing this version of a violent, brutish Chaotic Evil character was fun, but ultimately most RP choices in this style led to fighting and killing. So there's not too much nuance to it. Having many good-aligned characters abandon me at inopportune times along the way meant I spent large periods of time without at least one of the four core class types, so that made things a little interesting.
  • But between so much fighting and smaller parties due to the evil RPing, I gained a lot of XP. I hit the TotSC XP cap without ever going to Durlag's Tower, which I ultimately skipped entirely.
  • The rush to "claim" the potentially lucrative trading outpost of Balduran's Isle was a main motivator for my character in BG1, always looking to enrich himself and gain more power--I thought that was fun. It was about as important as killing Sarevok for a time.
  • In SoA, getting the de'Arnise stronghold early on was a good "tentpole" plot point which led me to explore most of the Amnish countryside and get involved in the various quests, in the RP guise of ensuring there were no adjacent threats to my land. I would never have found all the components of Crom Faeyr without this motivator.
  • Since Siege of Dragonspear, Viconia and Edwin had been long-time companions, through that game into almost all of SoA and ToB. Never spent that much time with either companion before. The Viconia romance ended early on when I likely insulted her at some point.
  • Surprisingly, this was my toughest time with the Melissan battle since I started keeping campaign logs and tracking reloads. Previously I hadn't needed more than 1 or 2 reloads. The lesson for me is that just one tank makes the battle much more difficult. Hmm maybe I should have used Viconia more in that role? Too late now.
So yeah, I'll likely start a new thread soon out of Candlekeep...need to come up with a character first. Feels strange not to be focusing on BG3...but like I said, maybe eventually haha.
