Under the effects of the Charm grenade, the dwarf fully trusts Antimatter and commands the Treants to return. The dire wolves have been unsummoned by now. The Treants open the cellar door and pick up the intoxicated prisoners, laying them on the grass. The dwarf casts Slow Poison on them. They become conscious again. Initially frightened, they begin to calm down as the dwarf explains to them that they are now free, thanks to the adventuring party. The middle-aged man speaks to the group:

Man: "Oh... Please accept my heartfelt thanks for saving us... but we don't have anything to give you in return... you see, we're prisoners. Or I should say, we were prisoners... I was in one of the cells of the town jail, minding my own business, just like my associates here. Suddenly a portal opened in the corridor, and a Treant appeared! It managed to open the doors of our cells, and it took us here! Then we were poisoned with something, I'm sure of it, and I don't remember what happened next. That is, until you freed us! Thank you so much once again. I'm afraid we cannot stay, since, you know, we're convicted criminals... allegedly. The town sheriff is no doubt looking for us, he must think that we escaped from jail somehow... which is technically true. So... goodbye!."

The trio thanks the party once again, and they run away. The dwarf turns to Antimatter and says:

Druid: "Dear friend, of course I will gladly answer all of your questions. Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Tolgin. Ever since I was a young dwarf, living in the Grey Mountain with the rest of my kin, I was fascinated by mushrooms and cave-dwelling animals. As I grew up, I tried to learn everything I could about them. I had the opportunity to meet a Half-Elven druid by the name of Verelin. Surprised by my interest in flora and fauna, she invited me to her Druid Circle, and agreed to teach me what she knew. I became her apprentice. But my family, as well as the rest of my dwarven kin, did not approve. They said that Druidism is not for dwarves. I was shunned by my community, and expelled from my clan. However, I was determined to prove them wrong. In order to do so, I had to part ways with Verelin, and begin my own journey. So I traveled from one place to the other, trying to help Nature however I could. Eventually I arrived at this forest. It became my home, and the Treants became my friends. But this summer was very dry, I thought that its soil needed to be enriched. Thus I thought of a plan. The Treants, as well as myself, would sneak into the local jail to steal some prisoners. Of course, I would not bury good people to enrich the soil, instead I made it clear that we would only bury especially loathsome individuals, such as the three murderers that you have just set free. But I am not angry at you, I feel like we have always been excellent friends! Anyways, that was the plan. I am so glad to have met you! Please accept this gift, as a token of my friendship."

The dwarf hands Antimatter a magical ring. Upon examination, it is a Ring of Protection +2.

By the time the dwarf finished his story, the three prisoners were long gone. The party would have to decide whether or not to chase them. But that is a story for another adventure.

DM says: And thus concludes the first chapter of the Tavern Campaign. While this ending might not be exactly what you expected, I hope that everyone had fun!

Thank you very much @m7600 for this unexpected journey (Tolkien reference fully intended), and everyone else for participating.

I'm pretty sure Antimatter prepared those charm grenades so carefully that the prisoners will get back to the sheriff and turn themselves in before the effect wears off.

Please follow us all back to the common room. There will be cake and warm drinks, no Ryncol involved.

"tsk'va, do-gooding primes." Alice briefly considers challenging the biggest sentient she can see to a duel to at least get somethign out of this debacle, before sheathing her sword with a sigh walking back to the tavern for some Githyanki-style mushroom beer, which, unlikely though it might be, is on tap.

Hey Gith! You have quads! If you dare to taste a real Krogan drink, just say the word. But don't use a wooden or tin cup, they don't last until you've finished it.

And I bet the dwarf was wearing some constitution bonus item. No way he was unaffected by my thick skull plate (I grumble and walk back to the tavern, carefully eyeing the landscape for moving shrubs with a ferret underneath. He still has that Rogue Stone. Let's hope the goose doesn't attack him once he gets back).

You're welcome, I had a lot of fun! Congrats to the players, you all played really well. The way I see it, if a D&D session ends without any sort of nasty discussion between the players and/or the DM, then it was a success 🤣 (although, die-hard fans will tell you that it's not D&D unless someone walks away from the table furiously, lol!)

I definitely like this story-oriented, loosey-goosey (pun intended 🦆) format. But, admittedly, it's really difficult to be objective without character sheets and dice. Maybe for the next session we can try to implement that and see how it goes.

Yeah and sorry if I sometimes replied too early because I wasn't sure who else is still playing.
I think it was still fun, particularly for our first attempt, and we can learn from experience. Maybe next time we establish a few rules, m7600 mentioned character sheets and dice, and I'm thinking of something like turns or minimum time intervals between posts to make sure that everyone gets their say.
