But what to do with Luke here? If I hear 'moche' and I see a purple ball, should I back away and see what it is? In case it's a maze - drink potion of magic resist and equip magic resist equip? (I think with ring of gaxx, amulet of seldarine, hell trials and hindo's doom/sword of balduran I could get to 100%)
There's a fair number of potions of magic protection (6) and this is their ideal use case, so I wouldn't hesitate to just quaff as a prophylactic. If you waste one, you waste one. This shouldn't happen often, since you shouldn't be in touch range anyways.

Journal of Ilvara

Ilvara made her way through the bandit camp and Cloakwood by just using stealth. No fighting!

Sneaked through the Cloakwood Mine as well. At the bottom I charmed Dark Silvia. Davaeorn used his spells up on him and then it was just a melee fight which I won. :)

I have now reached Baldur's Gate.

Thief071.jpg

Being evil, lying about the slaves didn't bother me. :devilish:

Having the difficult fights early on seems to have paid off. I can now avoid difficult conflicts.

A tome that I found boosted my dex to 20.

I have decided not to do the DSoSC quests as I would like to try this thief in SoD ASAP.

Starting Balduran Moonflower, the Elven Cavalier

Elf95.jpg
Baldr006.jpg

Born of a famous Moonflower mother and, so she says, Balduran himself. Others say differently, partially due to the fact that I am not a half-elf, but I will attempt to live up to the name that I have been given.

It took all of Gorion's diplomacy and influence to allow me to train as a Paladin due to my Elven heritage.

Being a law-abiding paladin I didn't steal from any of the chests.

Do you use a re-roller, Wise?

I've been thinking about running a wizard slayer, but if I am to keep the option of recruiting Balthazar open I'll need an epic roll

I do sometimes use a re-roller. I did in this case. I don't tend to roll it for long, just while I'm making a coffee. As a result I sometimes get an excellent roll, but not always. However, it usually means a reasonable roll.

This roll however was NOT with a re-roller. Occasionally luck is on your side.

For a wizard slayer I'd want a 97, and I have exactly zero interest in trying to roll that au naturel, lol. I've never used a re-roller before, but I'm def inclined to do it in this case.

(I guess I'm not even sure if there are Mac options for that, actually...)

Luke, Halfling Fighter: Part 11 – Of Cats and Trolls

Luke vaguely remembered promising some fancy-pants lord named Firkraag to “clear his lands of evil” in exchange for a LOT of money.

Say one thing for Luke — say a LOT of money and you’ve got his undivided attention.

The Windspear Hills looked peaceful enough… until Luke found himself nose-to-whisker with a hulking, cat-like creature called a Ruhk. The beast didn’t just look smug — it was practically radiating “you can’t touch me” energy. And to be fair, once it threw Protection from Magical Weapons, it was exactly right. Luke’s normal darts bounced off the feline creature:
Screenshot (271).jpg
What followed was less “heroic duel” and more “overgrown game of cat and mouse,” except the mouse was Luke, and he was running for his life through cold stone corridors muttering, “I really hate Ruhk” between breaths. Eventually after a lot of running when Rukh's protection disappeared and he managed to take it down.

(Side note: This is usually the hardest fight in Windspear Hills for me — not counting Firkraag. If I ever play a ranger again, I’m making Rakshasa my racial enemy out of sheer spite.)

Past the carcass of his feline nemesis, the dungeon swallowed him in damp, echoing stone. Orcs fell. Undead crumbled. Golems shattered. Then he stumbled on treasure — real treasure. Not gold, but something far rarer: a pile of Darts of Stunning:
Screenshot (272).jpg
In the Sword Coast, these were as common as a drunk dwarf in a tavern, but here in Amn? Priceless. Luke stuffed them into his pack with the same tenderness some people reserve for newborns.

Freshly armed and riding a wave of confidence, Luke rounded a corner and met… three Greater Wolfweres. Big, fast, and smug about it, they regenerated faster than he could blink. Darts of Stunning? No luck. Darts of Wounding? That finally did the trick, but not before Luke found himself muttering, “Please, gods, let this be the last time I see one of these hairy nightmares.”:
Screenshot (273).jpg

Screenshot (274).jpg
His next opponent was the biggest, meanest golem Luke had ever seen — easily the size of a barn. It was like David versus Goliath, except David was using darts instead of a sling, and Goliath kept looking like he might squash him into jam. Fortunately, the golem’s pathfinding wasn’t great — it got stuck. Luke pelted it from a safe distance for what felt like a hundred darts (he was sure as hell glad to have his returning dart here) until the giant finally toppled over with a thud that rattled his teeth:
Screenshot (275).jpg
Finally, at the heart of the dungeon, Luke faced a mage named Kevin Conster. The wizard managed to get off a Teleportation Field and True Sight before Luke’s regular, unenchanted darts tore through him. Protection from Magical Weapons? Cute trick — didn’t work on sharp bits of mundane wood:
Screenshot (276).jpg
That’s when Luke discovered the truth: the “noble” Lord Firkraag was actually a giant, fire-breathing, smug-as-hell red dragon. Apparently, the whole quest was just a bit of entertainment for the beast. Firkraag waved him off, chuckling. Luke considered throwing a dart at him on the way out, just to see the look on his face — but for once, reason won over impulse.

Luke left the dungeon sweaty, bruised, and slightly richer in both gold and ammunition — but most importantly, very certain that next time someone offers “a LOT of money” for “just a quick bit of monster slaying,” he’s going to ask exactly what kind of monsters we’re talking about.

Or would he? Say one thing for Luke — say he never learns.

Because on the way back to Athkatla, he took a detour to D’Arnise Keep, where he’d promised to deal with an “invasion of unknown monsters.” The highborn lady who greeted him tried to act like one of the common folk, but Luke had met enough nobility to know better.

Inside, he found his first troll. Bringing it down wasn’t hard — keeping it down was the problem. The beast kept getting back up. Then Luke remembered some dusty Candlekeep text about trolls: fire or acid was the key:
Screenshot (280).jpg
So he dug out a fancy-looking fire sword from his pack. He’d been half-afraid it would one day ignite inside his magical bag and turn all his belongings into a bonfire, but apparently the bag was fireproof. Or maybe Valygar’s remains stank so badly in there that even fire avoided them. Either way — it worked, and the troll stayed down.

From there, Luke went on a troll-clearing spree, though the spirit trolls gave him real trouble. Their magic bounced off him, but their regeneration and dart resistance were a nightmare. Still, they weren’t as bad as the dreaded Greater Wolfweres — and that was something:
Screenshot (282).jpg
One snake-headed mage popped up to cause trouble but went down fast under Luke’s mix of magical and regular darts:
Screenshot (283).jpg
A pair of secret doors later, Luke found himself staring at three hulking trolls in a tiny room. He blinked. How the hell did they get in here? Crawled in as babies? Teleported? Built the walls around them? Just another unsolved mystery in a world that made no architectural sense:
Screenshot (284).jpg
Among the debris, Luke found a stash of Darts of Stunning — a welcome blast from the past. He used them immediately on a fellow named Glaicus, stunning him just like in the old Sword Coast days, when life was simpler. Well, if you could call “Solving Iron Crisis, clearing your name, and winning the Grand Tournament” simple:
Screenshot (286).jpg
Deeper inside, Luke found a strange room with three altars and six golems. He checked the altars for treasure — and, naturally, the golems came to life. With a halfling sword in his off-hand to ward against Slow and a blade named Namarra in his main (his only non-missile +2 weapon at the time), Luke hacked away until the last stone brute fell:
Screenshot (290).jpg
Next to the golem room, a set of stairs led downward. Strange noises echoed up from the darkness, and Luke’s halfling instincts tingled. “Nope,” he muttered. “Not today.” He’d come back later.

In the garden, he put his newly acquired Horn of Blasting to use for the first time, stunning the local Otyugh before crushing it in a flurry of attacks:
Screenshot (291).jpg

(Side note: First time I’ve actually used the Horn of Blasting was the last was when we were playing with Kalam/Ryland and @Borco. Turns out it’s actually pretty decent, especially for Luke as crowd control is not his strongest side.)

I'm always super stressed with Conster's Teleport Field here. In case you'll end up in that left cell, your only chance is to catch a second teleport back before the spell expires, otherwise you're busted for good.

If the worst comes to the worst you could use Ctrl 8 and just lower whichever stats you want to reduce. You might have to enable cheats to use Ctrl 8. I'm not sure about that.
I took a quick look for you and I think that you may have to use NI which does work with Mac so long as you have Java.

With NI you could edit assassins in Candlekeep to be carrying tomes. Just an idea.

Or just use Create item.
C:CreateItem("[Item name]")

If you tell me what you would like the Wizard Slayer to be, Race, Gender, Weapon Proficiency and the like, I could roll one and send you the chr file.

Baldr016.png

Sadly I am unable to paste the chr files here, even in a 7z file.

Do you know how I can share them with you?

I knocked this character together in just a few minutes,

Having recently played a Cavalier, I have decided to drop that last game for the moment and play a dragon disciple/wizard slayer duo.
I am a complete newbie as far as playing sorcerers is concerned, so I don't expect to complete even BG1.

Journal of Dago the Dragon Disciple.

We are both Banites. Barga became one first due to being approached by a Banelord who convinced him that the biggest problem on the Sword Coast at the current time is the bandit problem and that something has to be done about the widespread dishonesty. He managed to convince me as well, which is the reason why I haven't been stealing from chests in Candlekeep.

That's a good point. When I used Teleport Field, back in the day, I lifted enemies over walls all the time. I don't recall it ever happening to me, though.

Thanks, Wise!

I know how to edit files in NI and, tbh, I'm already fiddling with a wizard slayer so edited. The re-roller would just be an ever so slightly more "legit" way of getting the numbers I need, if I decide to properly run her.

(I rarely worry about base stats, since they're so malleable in this game, but wizard slayers don't have the luxuries other characters do. Worse still, in an Ascension run there are no dump stat categories. Strength, Con, Dex are obviously important. Int is needed for defense against mind flayers, since you can't use potions of genius to buff or heal. Wisdom must be 19+ to recruit Balthazar, if evil, and Charisma should be 15+ also for Balthazar.)

(And as an fyi, the build I have in mind is a resistance tank, wearing the Human Flesh Armor, wielding Ages + The Defender, rocking Ascension evil path resistance bonuses. Soul Reaver will be used to bring the hit frequency down to an acceptable level. She should be viable at high level. The trick will be getting her there. I have BG1 sussed but SoA is sketch.)

@Alesia_BH

Here is a dwarven Wizard that I have knocked together.
Give me a few more details about what you want, and I'll try to provide it.

Check out whether these files work first.
They'll work in Windows.
I don't know if they'll work in your set-up

It looks like zip files are OK. 7z files aren't.

Thanks, Wise! This is my wizard slayer, Ayla- partially tomed and wielding Buckley's Buckler.
Screenshot 2025-08-14 at 2.06.01 PM.jpg

(The Int is sub-optimal because I hate implausibly low Int stats and giving her the number I'd want, 13, just felt like a bridge too far. 9 is arguably a better choice. Tome to 10, give back one to the Candlekeep demon, still absorb two mind flayer hits. 11 tomed to 12 is kind of a pointless middle ground, except for aesthetics.)

@Alesia_BH

So, is she now what you want, or would you like me to edit her in some way? You could use a tome or two to boost intelligence.

Not difficult if you can use the console.

If you would like me to, I could roll you a character and post the files now I know how to do it.

I tried rolling the character that you want, and realised just how long it would have to re-roll. Probably an over-nighter.

I don't know whether you were wanting it rolled in BG1, SoD, or SoA. The experience of that character makes me think SoD

Starting in SoD gives you 64,000 exp.

Playing some mods give extra tomes. The Greywolf Clan gives +1 int. NToSC gives a few more. You ARE made to work for them though, as is right.

For my own purposes I usually just use the roller until I get a roll in the nineties. Doing that, just occasionally I get a high roll, some of which I have got recently.

Now back to my Dragon Disciple run. I just realised that I accidentally made Dago Lawful Good and not Lawful Evil. A complete mistake. He's definitely NOT a Banite and he cannot stand Barga who IS a Banite. So, I dropped him like a ton of bricks and go with the flow. He is not going to break into any chests at Candlekeep or inn the towns since he is lawful good, but will have no qualms about doing the same in the bandit camp and the like.

Barga may appear in a subsequent run.

Didn't even leave the area of Gorion's death. :(

My approach is to grant my character an 88. If I want something higher, I need to roll for it.

(An evil wizard slayer in Ascension is just a bit too point hungry, which is why I'm allowing her a re-roller.)
