This is the part that gets me. It's so in-your-face that I couldn't believe what the actual fuck I was reading when I first saw it. Insane storytelling skills right there. There's nothing like that in Planescape: Torment, and that's saying a lot.

As much as I hate that quest, and I really do hate it, I freely admit it's good storytelling. The most well connected people in this world are above "official" consequences. Just because you are the "hero" doesn't change that.

My only complaint is that you should be allowed to bring the subject up to Gilbert Bates, even if it goes nowhere. He's one of the wealthiest and well-known people in Arcanum and he trusts you (if you do things a certain way).

Yeah but it's super fucking creepy, and I don't know if I want to deal with that during my leisure time. The world is bad enough as it is. Like, let me just play an escapist videogame, lol.

I am almost convinced that one of the more articulate half-ogres you meet on the Isle of Despair (guarding the door to Ogrin I think) is, well...royalty. His backstory and his mannerisms are a noticeably different than the rest. Including that he even has a backstory as a throwaway half-ogre NPC.

It's definitely possible. I recall now that the part of Arcanum that really gave me the chills was when you find the ancient civilization, and it was sort of like their present-day Tarant, only a bit more advanced. But they had more or less the same steampunk technology, faux 19th century shenanigans, etc. They even had the same sorts of newspapers. So, the takeaway here is that, this steampunk Industrial Revolution thing had already happened, dozens and dozens of times in the past, and they were always starting from scratch, only to rise, then collapse, and start again. Kind of like The Matrix 2, only with steampunk technology and no intelligent machines. Arcanum is a mix of Wild West with 19th Century British politics. Super interesting game, way better than most of the trash that gets millions in funding nowadays but then fails to deliver.

I really need to play this game through, if only for the story. I have it on disc, somewhere, but would need to re-buy it from GoG. I never finished it because I found the actual gameplay to be kinda janky, but I kinda want to get past that and experience the story of this place.

To hold me over between bouts of Arcanum I have decided to try to beat another game that held me back for too long, Fallout 2.

Using the same philosophy that worked so well in Arcanum, I went the Charisma route. Meet Chitsa Fairtrade. Master of speech, barter, and gambling.

My goal is to make as many caps as humanly possible and use it to keep my squad well stocked enough to handle most encounters. I have slowly pumped unarmed as my only combat skill. If negotiations fail to work, she delivers a swift kick to the groin.

Somehow, I managed to defeat all of the boxers with no reloads, while having only 3 strength and endurance. Lucky critical knockdowns truly are a blessing. Gotta love Fallout.

Very unusual stat line! I like to see how different people play, as I myself tend to fall into the "power gamer" cookie-cutter builds in FO games. I wish you great success! I will not spoil your game, but just give a gentle hint that don't put over ~130 in Gambling. I'm a bit rusty but I believe it's around that amount you reach a point for infinite money. You can get buy with less, around 115-120 with more patience IIRC.

That's not a pre-gen. No pre-gen has 3 strength in that game. What's up with you?
It is a pre-gen that I added the "gifted" trait to and then changed the stat line and skills around a bit

"Chitsa" was the name of the pre-gen I used as a template. I added "Chitsa Fairtrade" because it made me laugh

Booted up an old PoE1 save somewhere in WM1/Act 3. Finished WM1 for the first time ever actually, have owned it for a long time but never finished it. Just finished Endless paths and took down the Master Below. Will go and play WM2 and plan to finish that too then for the first time, then wrap up Talos and move to PoE2 perhaps. Playing a cipher and I'm at level 14 or 15 now.

I always had a lot of trouble making progress in Arcanum, but this time I've become practically unstoppable.
I don't know if you would know this, but do you think the current GoG version still needs the unofficial patch? I've tried googling it, but came up with nothing current.

Depending of the fixes it introduced. Here's what GOG did with the game, with his game conservation program:
  • Applied DDrawCompat for seamless support with modern displays
  • Set core affinity to 1 CPU core, improving performance on modern systems.
  • Fixed Alt-Tabbing leading to black screen
  • Validated stability
  • Verified compatibility with Windows 10 and 11
But those unofficial patches usually fix in game bugs, rather than technical aspect od the game, so I assume it's still needed.

Thank you for the new link. There's a lot more fascinating information there, "straight from the horse's mouth", as it were. One of the nice things about being a fan of a living composer's music is that you don't have to speculate on what they were thinking or what influenced their compositions. You can just ask them. :)

I'm happy that Paul Romero is still getting lots of positive attention for his work, and much of his life and thoughts are being documented for posterity.
Good news! Paul Romero is coming back.

This is such a cozy gift for all Heroes fans!

Not needed per se, but nice to have since there are other bugs that are addressed with it. Also, having access to the Virgil debug/cheat "dialogue" can be nice.

I am making slow but steady progress in Arcanum. I have just arrived at Quintarra, and set off on the first quest I was given. This led me to Waroman, and I instantly knew I was going to keep him until end game. He's none of the standard races, which is cool, he has magic which fits my team, and he is an archer which I don't have. Perfect. I dropped one of my ogres for him. At this point, I don't *need* the extra melee power. Gar, my puppy, and my PC with expert in melee handle things fine.

Speaking of Gar, he's becoming one of my favorite companions. Not only does he have a lot to say, but some of it is pretty entertaining, and he's just overall a well-rounded, likable dude. He fits the setting well in a lot of ways too, with his attempted refined speech, broad knowledge of subject matters, and prudish outlook (ask him about Stillwater)
