Interesting start, Wise. I like this one!

EDIT: Btw, I just noticed you final post on Strongheart. Condolences. It's very cool that you're embracing the unknown in a no reload context, though!

The inspiration came from the image that I used for the portraits. Her name came from reading up about Moonblades.

Shanks journal came from my own imagination. I used EE Keeper to supply Shank with the Moonblade and armour.

Another idea that I have had was to play Drizzt, but even if I started him at level 1, giving him magical resistance would over-power him.

In this game I will avoid Drizzt until I have got past the Ducal Palace.

EDIT

Journal of Mel

I have picked up Tenya and went to Nashkel after picking up a couple of belts from an ogre's body.

Being light, the ankheg plate was great for her.

We took Samuel to the FAI.

We returned the Colquetle amulet.

We helped Farmer Brun and hunted ankheg galore.

Reputation now 19.

When we sell the ankheg shells we'll be rich. (At least until we go shopping)

Alena, Halfling Priest of Lathander, Canon Party Run: The Planar Sphere, Part 2: Taibela and Necre

It felt good to clear hurdle one. It felt better to clear hurdle two. It felt better to clear hurdle two because this time the battle went according to plan, a rarity in a run where characterized by almost-but-not-quites.

Before heading on to Taibela and Necre, we had two matters to attend to. Yoshi had some left over traps on the field, and there were spiders to deal with in the next room. Jaheira proposed a two birds with one stone approach. We went for it.
Screenshot 2024-07-17 at 2.11.37 PM.jpg
Time for Taibela and Necre.
Screenshot 2024-07-17 at 2.11.57 PM.jpg
This was the same plan we executed against Kayardi and friends, just without the irritating foul ups. Our opening was slightly different this time, due to our opponents buffs. Nalia went with Death Fog, but since Taibela had gone MGoI and MST we jumped on the opportunity to neutralize her quick with Spell Thirst->MAA. As for the warriors, they were more or less annihilated by a Yoshi trap and the Death Fog. Necre is unbuffed right now because he tried to Divine on our approach, delaying the firing of his buffs. Hopefully that's their only Divination spell. True Sight + Spell Thrust is a problem at these levels.
Screenshot 2024-07-17 at 2.46.05 PM.jpg
We're looking good so far. Necre is running Spell Shield and GoI. We're jealous of his Spell Shield, but it's not doing a ton of work in this setup. He'll be stripped in two rounds, and he still hasn't made it out of the fog. Meanwhile, Taibela is in the fog and tagged with MAA.
Screenshot 2024-07-17 at 2.47.06 PM.jpg
By now Taibela and Necre are stripped of spell protections and cowering at the edge of the fog. Taibela times a Spell Thrust through MAA ticks. She targets Aerie. That's a blow. Aerie's specific protections are still in place, however, along with her II untargetability. Aerie is safe, at the moment, but with a magic number of 1, and two mages on the field, we need to knock out one of those mages fast, or Aerie will have to withdraw. Bring the pain, Nalia.
Screenshot 2024-07-17 at 2.48.47 PM.jpg
Now finish it Aerie.
Screenshot 2024-07-17 at 2.49.40 PM.jpg
Very good. The Remove threats are gone. Time to pull back to Yoshi's traps and the waiting squad. We're facing two sword spiders and one skeleton warrior. A Yoshimo trap takes down one spider.
Screenshot 2024-07-17 at 2.50.13 PM.jpg
The second one slips by our summons, only to be squashed by the waiting party. The skeleton warrior, meanwhile, has been intercepted by our summons.
Screenshot 2024-07-17 at 2.52.14 PM.jpg
Nice work, team. We're starting to get this. We'll only lose if we're massively outgunned. Unfortunately we're about to be massively outgunned.

Alena, Halfling Priest of Lathander, Canon Party Run: The Planar Sphere, Part 3: Lavok

Against Lavok we used the effective but unsatisfying summon army plus stationary AoE strategy. To make this semi-sporting I made a point of keeping some, if not all, of our party members within Lavok's sight range at all times.

We used Nalia to draw out Lavok's opening Chain. We expected it to include Wilting. It turned out to be FoD + Symbol, Death + Wilting. Death Ward foiled the first two. With Nalia's L6 allocated to Spell Deflection, instead of Pro Magic Energy, we had hoped to get the timing right on a Luck cast via scroll. We missed the window, but with 72HP and her save v spells at zero, that Wilting wasn't a serious threat. I had considered giving Nalia Alena's BoIB for this, but I was afraid of something cheeky like Time Stop->approach PC. No matter: Nalia countered the damage with a pair of extra healers, and the fight went on. In retrospect we should have had Nalia allocate a third SI to SI:N. Next time. Those skellies represented our first wave of summons. They were Death Spelled as expected. We were expecting at least two Death Spells from Lavok.
Screenshot 2024-07-17 at 5.29.18 PM.jpg
Here we see our second wave of summons falling to Death Spell. A third wave is incoming, and this one will include the magic resistance Fleshy. That Cloudkill was a test to see if Lavok is still immune to poison. He is. A Death Fog, cast by Aerie from scroll, did most of the work here.
Screenshot 2024-07-17 at 5.33.33 PM.jpg
Aerie's SI:A expires. Lavok, sensing an opportunity, targets the nearby Minsc with a Remove Sequencer.
Screenshot 2024-07-17 at 5.34.39 PM.jpg
Aerie and Minsc are dispelled. Nice work, you two. Now get out of there. The rest of the team will take it from here.
Screenshot 2024-07-17 at 5.35.00 PM.jpg
Screenshot 2024-07-17 at 5.36.09 PM.jpg
And there it is: This is the checkmate we've been angling for. Fleshie, immune to magic, in Lavok's face, with Lavok's Death Spells drawn out. Nalia, specific protections intact, running Spell Deflection, holding the line. It's only a matter of time now.
Screenshot 2024-07-17 at 5.36.47 PM.jpg
Lavok pulls his Trigger. Spell Shield + Spell Deflection + GoI is a good one. I use that too. It can't help him now though, not with that Death Fog still churning and his Improved Mantle about to expire.
Screenshot 2024-07-17 at 5.37.14 PM.jpg
We've done it. It's a shame we brought Yoshi instead of Valygar. Once again, next time.

Alena, Halfling Priest of Lathander, Canon Party Run: The Planar Sphere, Part 4: Tolgerias- Little Fluffy Clouds
a.jpg

People say you learn something new every day. I must be slow because I learn something new every six to eight weeks.

That's on average. I have my good days. Today was one of them. Today I learned a lot of things.

First and foremost, I learned that George Clooney is Valygar's manservant.
1.jpg
Who knew? Not George Clooney, I'd wager.

I also learned that Death Gaze does acid damage now. Noted.
Screenshot 2024-07-18 at 8.32.38 AM.jpg
Finally, I learned the DavidW is trying to kill me. Not me personally, but maybe me personally? I don't know. Sometimes it feels like it. Sometimes David's v35 scripts do the exact right thing to foil my plans. My plans...Hmm, that's a new way of thinking about it. He's not trying to kill me, he's trying to kill my plans. That's fair. Some of my plans are discount day at the dollar store cheap. They deserve to die. I just hope they don't take Alena down with them.

Part of me thinks we should talk more about the whole George Clooney manservant thing, but I'm going to file that in the personal interest category and move onto the Tanar'ri. Don't thank me later. Thank me now.

We let our fire elementals handle the opening quasits and salamanders. With their fire resistance and immunity to weapons below +2, they had nothing to fear. I'd say the SCS fire elemental are OP, but really all fire elementals are OP. Few enemies rock +2s or higher in SoA. I haven't tried buffing these things, but I'm pretty sure they could win a lot of fights. Like a lot. Mencar and Co would be an interesting choice. Buff up your elemental, cast Remove Curse on Orcslicer, and enjoy the show.
Screenshot 2024-07-18 at 8.15.30 AM.jpg
Say what you will about Mr. Tanar'ri here but he's clued in- ear to the ground and all that. He wanted no part of the ToD. He penguin waddled right by her. Here we see Jaheira and Minsc belatedly moving into position to intercept. Minsc, with his MIs protecting him from Vampiric Touch, took the lead. Oh, and check out Alena tossing her Bolt of Glory. Bolt of Glory would be a nice spell if the casting time weren't six to eight weeks. Nalia is casting Malison here because most of her book is useless atm, thanks to the Tanar'ri's decision to ignore the ToD.
Screenshot 2024-07-18 at 8.26.58 AM.jpg
Dead demons are the best demons. Alena did take damage from the acid portion of the Tanar'ri's Death Gaze, but she healed it.
Screenshot 2024-07-18 at 8.30.49 AM.jpg
Onto Tolgerias. Since my earliest runs, I've always thought of the Lavok fight as the big hurdle in the Planar Sphere. Not so. It's really Tolgerias. Tolgerias is the tough one- especially with SCS installed.

Alas, Tolgeris's greatest weakness is his strength. He's such a colossal pain in the tuckus that I find myself justifying an insta-kill here. I wasn't super enthused with the idea of doing that this time, but I caved on practical grounds. According to the no reloader grapevine, high level SCS mages use Imprisonment now. We could avoid that by staying out of touch range, but Tolgerias has more than one L9. Time Stop->Imprisonment would be a major bummer- especially since we don't have Freedom scrolls yet. The man had to die and he had to die fast. It was time for a Harm->Victor assassination.

This should be Aerie's job. As soon as she gets an L6 it will be. For now, the task falls to the eminently more vulnerable Jaheira. I don't love that.

Since the Drasus encounter had seemingly been tweaked to thwart a potion of firebreath insta-kill, it occurred to me that this encounter may have been altered too. We took our buffs before sending Jaheira in, and we waited, with bated breath, as she approached. We know you've got this, Jaccy. What we don't know is whether you'll survive.

Jaheira lands her Harm. Tolgerias vanishes almost -almost- fast enough to evade Jaheira's follow up Victor strike. The Cowled One falls, but he's left a going away present.
Screenshot 2024-07-18 at 8.53.35 AM.jpg
Remove + Malison + Summon Effreeti x 2. Like I said: this should be Aerie's job. You better run, Jaccy. Run for your life.
Screenshot 2024-07-18 at 8.54.11 AM.jpg
With Jaheira's aura clouded, on account of the Victor activation, she's seriously in danger here. Were I to do this again I'd have Jaheira and Aerie work as a team. Jaheira, equipped with Harmony, would land her Harm. Aerie in ToD mode, including SI:A, would activate the Victor. Once the Remove effects resolved, Jaheira, with a clear aura in this scenario, could activate her RoAC. Unfortunately for Jaheira, she doesn't live in that reality, she lives in this one. What to do?

SCS has changed Death Fog so that it no longer kills all summons creatures. Instead it kills creatures L8 or below. I hadn't checked the CRE files, but it seemed, highly, highly likely to me that those efreetis were above L8. Nonetheless, Death Fogging them was worth a try. We want our Death Fog on the field anyways to nullify Tolgerias's helper mage. Jaheira, we hate to do this, but we're going to ask you to take one for the team. Stop breaking north. Keep those efreetis in range of Nalia's Death Fog. You can still activate your RoAC II at first opportunity.
Screenshot 2024-07-18 at 8.56.18 AM.jpg
Jaheira falls. NGL, I saw that coming. Chalk up another death to v35 adjustments. SCS has done a nice job of making this encounter tricky for solo characters, at least non-arcane ones. As for the rest of us, we still have work to do.

The efreetis survived the Death Fog. No surprise there. They're the most dangerous enemies on the field, but the mage is more vulnerable so we'll take her out first. I shared that expanded battle record in the last pic to highlight the mage's buffs. She went MGoI + MSD. You know what that means ToD: Spell Thrust her. Let's get a True Sight going, too. It'll remove the mage's MIs, and hedge against the risk of invisibilities from the efreetis.
Screenshot 2024-07-18 at 8.57.49 AM.jpg
Nalia finishes the helper mage with a Skull Trap. Alena makes progress on the efreetis with another Holy Smite. We're going to win this but those efreetis aren't going down without a fight.
Screenshot 2024-07-18 at 8.59.17 AM.jpg
A fight indeed. We could kill them with ease, if only they didn't have that infernal gaseous form. I'm not complaining. It's a nice touch. It should be there. It is a hassle, though.
Screenshot 2024-07-18 at 8.59.40 AM.jpg
I don't usually give enemies theme songs, but these efreetis deserve one.

After getting these thing down to Near Death repeatedly, only to see them turn gaseous, we tried stunning them with Nalia's darts, hoping it would put the kibosh on the transformation.
Screenshot 2024-07-18 at 9.03.25 AM.jpg

Screenshot 2024-07-18 at 9.03.53 AM.jpg
That worked for one, not the other. He flipped to cloud form, even though he was stunned.
Screenshot 2024-07-18 at 9.04.30 AM.jpg
You know what? Frack this. If stun won't stop them then we're out of here. Minsc summons Mr. Efreeti. Mr. Efreeti casts Invisibility on Minsc and Nalia, the remaining party members without Sanctuary. Were gone. You efreetis can work this out between yourselves.
Screenshot 2024-07-18 at 9.07.59 AM.jpg
About time!
Screenshot 2024-07-18 at 9.08.38 AM.jpg

it's been a long road but we're almost home.

Best,

A.

Quick Note for Those Who Might Be Interested:

Our brief discussion of Transmuters got me thinking about my old Transmuter, Alastria, from the original Ascension Solo Challenge. I kept thinking about it off and on and I decided that I'd like to play a Transmuter again.

Since Alastria is dear to me, I tried to find her original portrait. I couldn't. I settled for the closest thing I could find, but that turned out to be something very different. The characters themselves look similar but they have radically different vibes. Some of you may remember Alastria 2.0, the polymorphing melee sorcerer. Alastria 3.0 will be a very different character. She'll be a true Transmuter, like the original Alastria, but her personality will be completely different from either of the prior iterations. The ditzy personality and chaotic good alignment are gone. So is her dove familiar, Tweedle-Deedles, and her personal item, the Super-Stylish Cloak of the Transmuting Princess. Instead we have a more serious, level headed Alastria, with a leather jacket and a Joan Jett vibe.

This isn't a proper intro post, but it is a preview of a run to come. World, meet Alastria 3.0, Alastria 3.0, meet the world:

She looks super badass with that scar and leather jacket.
It's a cool portrait, for sure. She's been fun to play so far, too. She's stealthy and has an affinity for Necromancy, in addition to Alteration. She sneaks up on her enemies under invisibility and then kills them with Color Spray and Chill Touch.
A.jpg
That's a low level move only, ofc, but I'm hoping to find cool and stylish stuff for her at all levels. This will have to be a minimal reload run in BG2, due to the lack of Abjuration spells, but it should be fun.

PS: Don't worry Alena fans: I'm not ditching her!

Creating new characters during a run is a classic symptom of restartitis. 🩺
Lol. True, but restartitis has never been an issue for me. I do abandon runs sometimes. On a few occasions I've done it with cool characters that were thriving. Aurora is a recent example there. When that happens it isn't because I felt like starting a new character, though. It's because I've suddenly stopped playing BG altogether.

Alena fans shouldn't worry about Alastria. She's not a threat. They should only worry if I suddenly disappear. It's hard for my characters to make progress without me.

Alena, Halfling Priest of Lathander, Canon Party Run: The Planar Sphere, Part 5- I'm Coming Home

As of our last episode, Alena and her team were almost home. All they had to do was clear the elemental rooms and toss their demon heart into the engine. I took a break, nonetheless, due to a mild case of efreeti fatigue. Tolgerias's summons has been a nuisance. I wasn't looking forward to facing the noble efreeti on the other side of the wall.

Elemental rooms mean elemental damage and elemental damage means we need to switch up out spellbooks. A nap was in order. We tried to rest in Tolgerias's playpen, but we were rudely interrupted. I'm only sharing this photo because it's mildly amusing to see Aerie in panic mode casting Sanctuary on account of a few quasits. Buffed she is the Tank of Doom. Unbuffed, not so much.
Screenshot 2024-07-18 at 4.43.17 PM.jpg
After a successful rest we were ready for the cold room. Bring it on, snow trolls. The Tank of Doom is back in business.
Screenshot 2024-07-18 at 4.54.54 PM.jpg
Sunfires and flame blades and scorchers, oh my.
Screenshot 2024-07-18 at 4.55.19 PM.jpg
Screenshot 2024-07-18 at 4.57.39 PM.jpg
Screenshot 2024-07-18 at 4.57.55 PM.jpg
The fire elemental room fight was so chaotic that I had to check the battle record to confirm that the efreeti died. We let Nalia take the lead this time so she could unleash her Cones of Cold. We had hoped to place Alena just behind her, in Cuisinart mode, but a ranging error on the Death Fog muddled that plan. My ranging has been terrible in this run. I'm losing my touch.
Screenshot 2024-07-18 at 5.14.56 PM.jpg
There, see: He's dead. No little fluffy clouds this time.
Screenshot 2024-07-18 at 5.18.05 PM.jpg
We let Aerie toss in the demon heart under Sanctuary. I was surprised by the apparent lack of golems, so I decided to explore. Where are they?
Screenshot 2024-07-18 at 5.21.31 PM.jpg
All I found was one: A clay golem, over by the hidey hole. Four golems are a problem, but one is easy XP. Let's march some elementals over there.
Screenshot 2024-07-18 at 5.22.47 PM.jpg
Hey! Where'd you come from? Who told you could spawn in late like that?
Screenshot 2024-07-18 at 5.24.27 PM.jpg
With four on the field, it was time to switch up the plan. We pulled the elementals back to clear the way to the hidey hole.
Screenshot 2024-07-18 at 5.26.01 PM.jpg
Nice work, Nalia. Get the goods and go.
Screenshot 2024-07-18 at 5.27.59 PM.jpg
With the job complete, and the loot in the bag, we made our way to the Hall of the Unwanted to meet up with Yoshi and Valygar. Who wants to watch Lavok die? Raise your hand.
Screenshot 2024-07-18 at 5.30.56 PM.jpg
Was it all you hoped and dreamed? We hope so. See you around, Valygar. If you're looking for work, try Trademeet. There's a paladin there in need of a squire.
Screenshot 2024-07-18 at 5.32.47 PM.jpg
All that remained was the ritual humiliation of Yoshimo. Yes, Yoshimo, we're going to the Flagons to celebrate. And no, you can't come with us. Go to the Copper and hang out with Anomen. We hear he's good company.
Screenshot 2024-07-18 at 5.35.56 PM.jpg

Best,

A.

Alena, Halfling Priest of Lathander, Canon Party Run: The Planar Prison, Part 1

Screenshot 2024-07-19 at 5.21.01 AM.jpg

I'm primarily a soloist. When I play parties, I play all arcane crews, where I have a clearly defined strategy. Alena's party has done reasonably well, but they've fought below their potential. That's not their fault. It's mine.

I'm still finding my way in mixed party play. It doesn't help that the added margin of safety of party play has made me lazy. Alena has never been in danger, and so I've never felt the need to optimize. That's a problem. The battles have been simple so far, but they will get harder. If we don't get our game down, we're going to hit a brick wall. It may happen sooner or it may happen later, but it will happen.

In solo play I learned to explore and optimize in every battle. It's the only way to survive in the long run. The same is true in party play, especially with the daunting battles looming ahead. I just haven't internalized that yet. I've been coasting and it's been costing us, in lost progress if not death.

My flirtations with Alastria don't reflect waning interest in Alena. Quite the opposite. The original Alastria taught me a lot. As far as I was aware, no one had completed a Transmuter solo, let alone a Tactics(Parts)/Ascension Transmuter solo. Everything was new. I had to make up the meta as I went along. My character's life depended on it, each and every battle. I've been fiddling with Alastria 3.0 to recapture that exploratory mindset. Alastria isn't Alena's rival. She's coming to the rescue.

In the Planar Prison we fought our first battle since I rolled Alastria. It was one of a very small number of fights where I felt I was on my game in this run.

Here we see the opening battle of the Planar Prison quest. The battle field is not conducive to a Death Fog based strategy, nor is it suited to a Tank of Doom beatdown. Instead we have an open battlefield where everyone will need to play their part. Let's see how it goes.
Screenshot 2024-07-19 at 4.19.34 AM.jpg
So far we haven't been using our Seqeuncers or Contingencies. That changed today. Nalia and Aerie both took Web Sequencers. Nalia took Contingency- See Enemy: Greater Malison. Nalia's Sequencer has been deployed to the east. Her Contingency has yet to fire. Aerie has held off on pulling her Sequencer because she'd like the bounty hunter mage to get his buffs up first. We want to do this right.
Screenshot 2024-07-19 at 4.20.38 AM.jpg
The mage's buffs are up now. We can drop Aerie's Sequencer and get to work. We've split the party into two teams. Aerie, Nalia and Jaheira are on mage killing duty. Minsc and Alena are charging into the web to take care of everyone else. Let's focus on Nalia, Aerie and Jaheira first. They have a nasty plan for that mage.
Screenshot 2024-07-19 at 4.22.39 AM.jpg
With Aerie's Sequncer deployed, Nalia targets that MGoI with a Spell Thrust, subjecting the mage to a double Web. Aerie follows with a Breach, clearing away the mage's Mantle. Jaheira charges with her Harm. It lands. A Belm follow up seals the deal. One down.
Screenshot 2024-07-19 at 4.23.30 AM.jpg
Screenshot 2024-07-19 at 4.24.10 AM.jpg
What are Minsc and Alena up to? They're turning Webbed chumps into chunking bits. Blade Barrier + Malison is nasty, especially under Haste.
Screenshot 2024-07-19 at 4.24.45 AM.jpg
The bounty hunter cleric makes a save. He begins to cast. Aerie and Nalia unleashed MAAs to shut him down.
Screenshot 2024-07-19 at 4.25.29 AM.jpg
Miraculously, the cleric gets his spell off. It's a Flame Strike, targeted at the 125% fire resistant Alena. That was the only offensive action we witnessed, and if anything it would have healed us. A satisfying, clean win. Our approach here was overkill, but that was by design. Better too much now, than too little later.

Best,

A.

Journal of Mel Moonflower

We defeated Bassilus using a silence spell, and the next spell stunned him. Battle over.

We summoned a skeleton to aid in the battles against ghouls. Zargal was lured away from his cohorts and killed. Tenya cast command on him without instructions from me: a good decision!

EDIT

I saw a helmet of charm protection on sale in Beregost which I bought immediately so that I could take on the Sirine in the Lighthouse area safely.

Tenya summoned a skeleton to lure the flesh golem away from the party just in case I was held by the trap. I wasn't, but didn't want to take the risk.

The second trap would have had no effect anyway due to the helm. The second golem hurt me badly, but we survived.

We rested outside but were ambushed by another Sirine who died. After another rest we were back at full strength.

We took Brage to Nashkel.

Xzar and Montaron joined us, Montaron being an excellent pick-pocket. He acquired a cloak in Beregost and numerous items at Ulgoth's Beard. I then bade them farewell.

Dorn joined us and together we fought and beat Kryll.

A peculiarity of the battle was that Darryl et al were also at the location where we fought Kryll. Kryll's spell killed them too! A bug perhaps.

We returned to Nashkel and after talking to Taris Dorn departed.

Immediately afterwards I was given Tenya's quest. We killed Lethe and Tenya can now use her bowl for summoning a water spirit.

Melicamp won't talk to me, at least, not in common!

Current reputation 19.

We rested at the carnival. Now time to join up with some colleagues perhaps.

Thorin joined us and we gave him an axe that turned out to be cursed.

Gavin then joined us and removed the curse.

Both he and Neera have a quest.

EDIT

I did Neera's first after which she left.

We then killed Mutamin.

The battle against Mutamin was quite scary due to mis-timing the silence spell for Mutamin got of enough lightning bolts to cause a lot of injuries. We did however prevail and departed to the FAI where we slowly recovered.

After that we visited the Southern Sword Coast helping Albert, a Dryad and the like.

We rescued Dynaheir and made our way to the FAI where I bought her a Magister's Robe.

Alena, Halfling Priest of Lathander, Canon Party Run: The Planar Prison, Part 2

Screenshot 2024-07-19 at 5.21.01 AM.jpg

On a few occasions Aerie and Nalia have gone ahead of the party and fought battles on their own. Later in the adventure, when Alena's specific protections can stand up to Remove, and Shield of the Archon is in place to thwart Breach, that won't be necessary. Now it is.

Splitting the party, and whittling our strength from five to two, would make some players uncomfortable. Not me. For me it's my happy place. Aerie and Nalia constituted half of Alicia's party in SoA Chapters 2 and 3. When Nalia and Aerie take control of the field, they're executing a feeble but still effective version of the strategy Alicia, and Alanis before her, employed in their no doubt marches to the Throne. Picture four casters instead of 2, each with Spell Shield, Spell Deflection and GoI complementing SI:A and SI: D + II. Picture, too, a dense multilayer Teleport Field with Glitterdust sequencers in play. Magical attacks have no chance due to the buffs. Melee assaults have no chance due to the Teleport Field. Ranged attacks have no hope thanks to Glitterdust. It's nasty. All we needed to do was light up the Telefied with damage spells, easy enough when you have four books to cast from.

Aerie and Nalia are nowhere near as privileged as Alicia's team. They don't have Spell Shield. They only have two L6s between them, both in Nalia's book. Finally, there's only two of them, not four. Nonetheless, Aerie and Nalia have shown they can handle themselves. A ~25% strength version of Alicia's strategy is still too much for most SoA foes to handle.

In SCS, the Planar Prison quadruple mage battle is one of the tougher fights in SoA. It deserves respect. Kudos to Aerie and Nalia for crushing it, even without Spell Shields and their two sorcerer friends.

Here we see the party all buffed up. Everyone is ready for combat, but it's Aerie and Nalia who will fight for us. What errors I made in this battle stemmed from trying to integrate the rest of the party. Were I to do this again, I'd have left this in the hands or our dynamic duo. As Nalia says, they're ready for anything.

Enough talk. Let's do this. Nalia opens with her Death Fog, Aerie begins the Abjuration assault, targeting the sole visible yuan ti mage. Mistake one was outsourcing True Sight duty to Jaheira, who can't get close enough to combat without risking her buffs. Aerie should be running True Sight through her cleric book. The fog is a little crowded with all these melee blokes, so we go with a round of skull traps. Now that his MGoI is down, they'll help us make progress on that yuan ti mage, too.

That telefield is their’s not ours, and it's a significant threat. Due to the odd, counter intuitive geometry of these rooms, and the monster pits, Teleport Field is especially dangerous here. While the telefield is important, it's not the most important thing in this screenshot. Check out Alena's portrait. She's been dispelled. That was mistake two. I had tried to bring her spells into the action. With her target on the wrong side of one of those unnavigable corners, she auto-walked too close. I need to stop making mistakes like that. Thankfully, with Harmony and her halfling saves, our protagonist was never in danger. She’s entirely out of the action now, but that's where she should have been all along. Note Jaheira, inching forward, hoping to bring her True Sight into play. Next time that will be Aerie's job, not Jaheira's, a recurrent theme in this run.
Screenshot 2024-07-19 at 11.31.02 AM.jpg
By now the first wave of warriors has been dispatched. Each time an enemy mage pops out of invisibility, they're tagged with either Secret Word or Spell Thrust, depending on their buffs. We have four of each so we won't run out. Note the thrall mage's spell, Emotion: Hopelessness. That's the second time we've seen that spell, and that spell alone, tossed at Aerie and Nalia, both running CC. I take that as a sign that the scripts are buff stumped, with no angle of attack. Please don't remind them that we don't have Spell Shield or GoI. Aerie doesn't even have Spell Deflection. She's vulnerable to Abjuration assaults from the bottom, ie- Spell Thrust, or the top, Secret Word and above. I'm looking forward to getting Spell Shield + GoI + Spell Deflection in place to protect those SIs. If you miss the good old days of Alicia's party, Aerie, I don't blame you. We're muddling through, but it does feel like muddling.
Screenshot 2024-07-19 at 11.33.33 AM.jpg
Tagged with MAAs, pelted with MMMs, and standing in a Death Fog, the thrall mage had little hope of casting. Note the damage on Jaheira. She was trying to use her sling while creeping close enough to divine. As in Alena's case, clicking on the other side of the pole auto-walked her too close. Like Alena, she should have stayed out of this entirely.
Screenshot 2024-07-19 at 11.34.59 AM.jpg
The thrall mage falls, but check out Jaheira's portrait again. She caught a Breach, attempting to join in on the fun in the cleanup phase. I'll say it again: Alena and Jaheira had no business being in this battle.
Screenshot 2024-07-19 at 11.37.11 AM.jpg
That's the second time, Jaheira. You're pissing Aerie off and you don't want to do that.
giphy.gif
All that remains is the thrall leader, who arrived late. Aerie still has her Stoneskins up, and she's rocking her Bracers of AC3 + Pellan's combo, but she's relatively vulnerable right now, since her illusions are down. She has a Defensive Harmony in her book for situations like this, and she usually has a Blur + II trigger, too. In this case we just went with Santuary. Nalia, at range, can finish this. The rest of the party can join, too, now that the enemy casters are dead. Not you, Jaheira, Aerie says you've lost your combat privileges.
Screenshot 2024-07-19 at 11.37.33 AM.jpg
Nalia starts Melfing. The Thrall Leader panics. Aerie moves forward to take a look, careful not to trigger the next encounter.
Screenshot 2024-07-19 at 11.42.32 AM.jpg
There: Fixed it.
Screenshot 2024-07-19 at 11.42.59 AM.jpg
Hurdle two cleared. Not going to lie, I'm nervous about the Warden. We were wrong, Yoshi, we should have invited you to the Flagons after all.

All right, I'm going to say it. I am officially opposing the Jaheira slander. I'm taking a stand. You may be doing amazing things with your arcane spellcasters, but as someone who loves druids, my heart hurts reading some of the recent posts 😢

I propably feel how you felt way back in the day when I played a randomized party challenge, randomized into having two thieves and all I did with them was disarm traps, open locks and auto-attack. Okay, maybe not quite as bad, but still. Fighter/Druids are so great, and she barely gets to do anything, and if she tries, she gets scolded for it. Now, of course, there's a reason you're holding her back, but there's also a reason David introduced Entropy Shield (and Impervious Sanctity of Mind) to adress the massive imbalance that SCS creates between arcane and divine spellcasters through its spellcaster AI (which isn't really that prevalent in the vanilla game as remove magic is both rare and mostly dodgeable). I know you don't play with IWD spells, but I would still love some Jaheira action.

(Don't take this post too seriously, I'm just noticing how completely opposite our party-based playstyle seems to be at this point :) )

Yay! Enhual is here to talk about druids! Happy day! :)

I love divine casters, too. Astrid's run really opened my eyes to the potential of clerics. My Avenger druid, Aliana, from the old Ascension Solo Challenge, is one of my all time favorite characters. In fact, I've been thinking about playing her again sometime soon.

I've seen the work you've done with divine casters, and druids in particular. It's outstanding. There's an enormous difference between your setups and mine with respect to druids, however. That's also a non-random sampling effect at play here.

You either play vanilla, where Insect Plague is a menace and Remove is less of a threat, or run SCS with Iceland Dale spells, where Entropy Shield, an SI:A analogue, is available. If I were running either of those setups, Jaheira would be doing far more work. In my setup, she's vulnerable to Remove, and given her half-elf saves, she's vulnerable to disablers soon after. Harmony would help her, but I leave that in Alena's hands, as a precaution. At current levels, in my setup, Jaheira isn't suited to front line duty when mages are on the fields. Note that phrase: When mages are on the field. That's key. Since mage fights are the most interesting ones, I post on those more, meaning you, the reader, see less of Jaheira than I or Alena do.

Check this out:

I talk about Aerie non-stop because I like her, but also because she takes the lead in mage fights, the fights that I cover in detail. The behind the scene reality is different, however. Aerie and Jaheira are exactly tied in total XP value, at 19%.

I rarely talk about Minsc, too. He's the party leader in XP and it's not even close.
Screenshot 2024-07-19 at 4.07.39 PM.jpg

The other thing to keep in mind is that I'm playing v35 for the first time. That's led me to take a tentative, look before you leap approach to combat. Against any enemy that may have interesting abilities currently unknown to me, it's Aerie up front, buffed against all possible threats, with everyone else fighting at range, observing and playing a support role. If I knew what to expect, I'd feel more comfortable putting our more vulnerable characters, like Jaheira and Minsc, in the thick of the action. I'd also feel more comfortable taking an aggressive everyone all in on damage approach to combat, a situation where Minsc and Jaheira would thrive.

Rest assured, I appreciate Jaheira's potential. Alena does even less than Jaheira in combat and not too long ago I did all of this with just a single class cleric, Astrid. Astrid was a beast. Alena is capable of being a beast too. Jaheira is no different. She could do it all, if given the chance. Right now, absent Entropy Shield, our divine casters are in a developmental phase, awaiting the day when their protections can stand up to Remove, and they have Breach stoppers at their disposal. You'll see more from both of them then.

In any case, thanks for your interest and comments! It's good to see you posting in the thread! Also, if you'd like to offer tips on getting them most out of Jaheira in SCS sans-Entropy Shield, please do feel free to share over in the Adventurer's Lounge. I'd love to pick your brain. Jaheira would too.

Cheers!

A.

Alena, Halfling Priest of Lathander, Canon Party Run: The Planar Prison, Part 3- The Nips Don't Lie

Screenshot 2024-07-19 at 9.07.11 PM.jpg

Hey! Look where we are!
Screenshot 2024-07-19 at 9.05.49 PM.jpg
And do you know who we have to thank?
jaheira_by_coutelier_d2r001h-375w-2x.jpg
That's right: Nature's servant, that's who.

The Master of Thralls fight was a good old fashioned melee brawl. Check out Jaheira's fire elementals, flanking the Master of Thralls. And what's this? Minsc leading the way for Aerie? It's upside down day, for sure. We even have Alena up front, rocking her Blade Barrier. When is the last time you saw that?
Screenshot 2024-07-19 at 3.25.30 PM.jpg
If I'm not mistaken, Jaheira's summons took down the Master of Thralls and one of the air elementals, too. We have confirmation on that elemental, at least.
e.jpg
Jaheira could have been on the front line in this fight. If she hadn't been on probation in Aerie's book, that's exactly where she would have been. Instead, she was relegated to holding back, slinging her sling bullets. No fun. Still, she looked for an excuse to sneak up into the thick of the action. When Minsc was hurt, she saw her chance. Mass Cure. See? That's helpful, right?
e2.jpg
Ok, fine, Jaheira: Aerie says you’re invited to the Warden party. Let's see if you can hold your own.

Since we wanted a preview of the Warden's hall before positioning ourselves and advancing, Alena allocated a L4 to Farsight. Not much to see here right now, but the Warden will reveal himself soon. No question.
Screenshot 2024-07-19 at 7.13.50 PM.jpg
And there he is. Spell Shield, huh? Everyone has Spell Shield except us. Fooey on that.
Screenshot 2024-07-19 at 7.15.26 PM.jpg
I was expecting more from the Warden's buffs. We have Spell Shield atop a MGoI and a MST. Nalia, take down that Spell Shield. Nice work.
Screenshot 2024-07-19 at 7.17.07 PM.jpg
Aerie, take care of those Minors to clear the way for Nalia's Breach.
Screenshot 2024-07-19 at 7.18.04 PM.jpg
Flame Blade? Flame Blade? What the hell is that about?
giphy.gif
Guess you're not perfect after all, huh, Aerie? That's ok. Nalia's turn is up and she knows what to do. Ready your Breach, Aerie. Jaheira is counting on you. That's right: Jaheira.
Screenshot 2024-07-19 at 7.19.28 PM.jpg
Ok. That trigger is going to hurt since we crowded out our Pro Lightnings with Farsight and Nymphs. That's ok. We've still got this. And guess who has Mass Cure at the ready? The nymphs.
Screenshot 2024-07-19 at 7.19.56 PM.jpg
Aerie gets it right this time, landing her Breach.
Screenshot 2024-07-19 at 7.20.27 PM.jpg
You're up Jaheira.
Screenshot 2024-07-19 at 7.22.49 PM.jpg
That's what I like to see.
Screenshot 2024-07-19 at 7.24.22 PM.jpg
But you know what? We can make that look even prettier. Forward, nymphs: Let's get some Confusion in there too.
Happy1.jpg
And there we have it: The Warden dies in shame: Shutdown, by insects. His allies are Confused by the nymphs or running in fear as Jaheira's buggy-wugs nip, nip away. Those insects may have been nerfed, but they can still get the job done. The nips don't lie.
Happy2.jpg
It feels good to be the hero, doesn't it, Jaheira? What's that you say? You have a message? A message for Enuhal? I guess we can make that work. It'll be tricky, what with you being in different universes and all, but that's the type of thing Special Agent Boo excels at. He's working on it now. And yes! We have confirmation: Connection established. Go ahead, Jaheira: Speak your mind.
valentine__jaheira_by_coutelier_d5u83oh-414w-2x.jpg
Huh? And it's not even February. Looks like you made a friend, Enuhal

Best,

A.

Journal of Mel

After getting Gavin up to level 7 we decided that it was time to visit the mines. All went well until we came across unexpected kobold shamans who panicked yours truly and subsequently did her a lot of harm. The first time that we attempted resting: more kobolds.

The second time we recovered.

Mulahey was straightforward to defeat.

We left Thorin in the mine and helped Xan to safety killing several enemies on the way.

We left him just north of Nashkel and went to pick up Thorin.

It seems that Gavin is enamoured with me though he hasn't actually said so.

EDIT

The above is out of date as he has just kissed me.

We thought we had cleared all the bandits at the camp, so Thorin entered Tazok's Tent. He then exited, the bandits following him right into an ambush of buffed skeleton warriors. However Hakt did not follow, but he was easy to deal with.

We sent the skeletons ahead of us and they alerted us to not only more bandits, but assassins too!

They killed some assassins without our aid and took the brunt of their spells.

Now that was a particularly good strategy as I wasn't expecting the assassins!

We have found Gurke's Cloak.

Gavin is very nervous of big spiders and Tenya doesn't like the little ones. Rather too many arachnaphobes for my liking.
