I actually decided to change his name to Drizzt, but with the same stats (no need to re-roll them, just import the character with a different name. Not a drow, so no magical resistance. Good stats though. As a child he was obsessed with Drizzt so his proficiencies got slightly warped, all four points going into wielding scimitars. Let's hope that he never needs other weapons as he would then have a problem. Starting weapons were the Wakizashi and Ninjato from the inn. I intend to use mod NPCs throughout to get a variation in conversations as well as game-play.

I may play CúChoinneach another time. (He'd be able to use the equipment of the famous CúChoinneach if they ever joined the same party.)

All points in scimitar, eh? The lack of a range weapon could be a problem. Your Drizzt needs training.

There’s a guy in Athkatla who can help. His name is Habib. Look him up
I know that eventually Drizzt will join me. At that point I can ask for his scimitars and bid him farewell. I have bought a Wakizashi +1 and Ninjato +1 to keep me going in the meantime. When I get towards the end of BG1, I can pick up a scimitar +2 from CúChoinneach which is good against undead. I still haven't decided whether to play CúChoinneach or Drizzt. Both could be interesting. The reason for putting **** in scimitars is that that is what Drizzt has. I am definitely leaning to playing CúChoinneach now and playing Drizzt later.

Alena, Halfling Priest of Lathander, Canon Party Run: Companion Quests, Part 1

Sometimes it takes a little adversity to remind us who our friends are. So it was with Aerie and Jaheira.

With the daunting trip to Spellhold ahead of her, Alena sought knowledge of her destination. Surely a resident of Athkatla would know more. Surely a mage with a criminal history would know most. That led Alena, inexorably, to Jan Jansen.
Screenshot 2024-07-21 at 1.25.57 AM.jpg
Shrouded in tangents though it may have been, Jan's knowledge was helpful. If he needed help in return, who could refuse? Certainly not Alena.

A bit of detective work led us back to the Flagons. But not for drinks and song this time. Instead there was a battle to fight. Who knew? Not me. I haven't done this in ages.

Caught off guard, we were on our heels. It felt like the Suna Seni fight all over again. Having learned our lesson, Aerie had an Invisibility 10' Radius ready this time. Alas she was Mazed before she could cast. Our emergency plan had failed.
Screenshot 2024-07-24 at 2.37.25 PM.jpg
A moment of panic hit us as we saw Aerie vanish. Jaheira felt it as much as anyone. We were now more vulnerable than we had ever been, facing an arcane threat, without a mage ourselves. The thing to do was disappear. And so the party did, each using their own ways.
Screenshot 2024-07-24 at 2.39.33 PM.jpg
We slipped away, and began battle preparations. We were eager for Aerie's return, but also fearful of it. Aerie would reappear where she had been, between the githyanki, far from us. Without her friends, like Jaheira, her life would be in danger. All Aerie could do was run, run and wait for her aura to clear.
Screenshot 2024-07-24 at 2.41.13 PM.jpg
To our relief, she made it. Faster than Chiktikka Fastpaws, indeed.
Screenshot 2024-07-24 at 2.41.38 PM.jpg
All that remained now was to reunite the party. But how could we get a message to Aerie without betraying our position to the githyanki? Set aside your dinner, Boo: We have a job for you. What's that you said, Boo? You're joking right? Is that really a priority now? Fine. If you can swallow your burrito whole go right ahead. Just get to work. Pronto, muchacho.
giphy.gif
With Special Agent Boo on the case, we knew our message would get through. Aerie would be with us soon. She was.

Aerie had taken damage in the initial encounter. Jaheira's nymph healed it. Aerie thanked the nymph, and Jaheira too.
Screenshot 2024-07-24 at 2.42.15 PM.jpg
Let's do this, team. It'll be odd at first, fighting without Nalia, but we've got this.
Screenshot 2024-07-24 at 2.51.31 PM.jpg
Alena's aerial servant and Jaheira's fire elemental led the way, trailed by the party and Jaheira's nymphs. Together now. Aerie, Secret Word.
Screenshot 2024-07-24 at 2.53.21 PM.jpg
Minsc. Get in there! You have your flails now. You can finally be the warrior you've always wanted to be.
Screenshot 2024-07-24 at 2.53.50 PM.jpg
Alena's aerial servant got the first kill. Her Holy Smite would take us closer to victory.
Screenshot 2024-07-24 at 2.54.21 PM.jpg
Minsc is closing. Nymphs, bring the Confusion. Aerie, clear the way with a Breach. Jaheira, charge with your Harm.
Screenshot 2024-07-24 at 2.55.15 PM.jpg
And there we have it. A small victory, but an important one. An important one because everyone played their part.
Screenshot 2024-07-24 at 2.56.00 PM.jpg
Even better, it helped Aerie and Jaheira settle their differences. Villains of the world have much to fear when Aerie and Jaheira stand together.
1.jpg

Best,

A.

Gaming Note: I didn’t release Nalia because of Imoen. I did it because I know I’ll keep crutching on my arcane party background if she’s around. Our first fight without Nalia was too simple to serve as a proper test, but it looked the way I hoped it would, with everyone playing their part.

It was just a joke. Do you know Habib from SoA? He's a nutty nutball who throws a scimitar at the party.
Rest assured that your chaotic humor has been noted by Cyric. He nods in approval and cackles maliciously at your mischievousness. In return, his high priest at the docks will bless your party for only half the usual price. No refunds if the spell backfires.

Our quest to aid Jan had led us to the Thumb, which led us to the Seas Bounty. There we found one Baron Ployer, a slaver with a grudge and a fiendish plot.

Ployer's scheme was devious but it quickly unravelled. Ployer's mages were mercenaries. They could be bought. A thousand gold seemed a bargain.
Screenshot 2024-07-24 at 5.48.07 PM.jpg
With Jaheira weakened if cured, we returned to the Flagons for a good night's rest. We chose a royal room, sparing no expense. When Jaheira was finally well, she and Aerie had a heart to heart, to hash out their differences once and for all. It was a moving moment for both of them, by all accounts. It culminated with Aerie gifting Jaheira her Ring of Sune. Jaheira was touched. As a gesture of goodwill, she granted Aerie a boon in return. None other than Haer'Dalis.
1.jpg
The rest of the party is enamored with the newcomer, but Jaheira remains cautious. Haer'Dalis is an unknown and the unknown can be dangerous. Jaheira will be watching his every step.
Screenshot 2024-07-24 at 6.09.15 PM.jpg
Now with a new member, and with Jaheira seeking to test her recovery, the party sought a new adventure. A trip to the troll mound seemed just the thing.

Alas, with a pair of Web sequencers, Free Action and fire resistance all around, this proved to be less a fight and more a slaughter. It was good to see the plan work so well, but it was also a little disappointing. This was hardly a challenge. It was hardly even a workout.
Screenshot 2024-07-24 at 10.53.20 PM.jpg
Sunfire.
Screenshot 2024-07-24 at 10.54.34 PM.jpg

Screenshot 2024-07-24 at 10.55.18 PM.jpg
Sunfire again.
Screenshot 2024-07-24 at 10.55.49 PM.jpg
And done.
Screenshot 2024-07-24 at 10.56.28 PM.jpg

So far, Haer'Dalis seems a good fit. Jaheira remains undecided.

Best,

A.

PS: A couple hours ago I posted a different version of this episode. That one was very, very different, similar to the stories I write for my bounty hunter. It was fun to write, but shortly after posting I decided I didn't like it. At all. It was the wrong direction to take, both for the story and the characters. For those who read the prior version, apologies for the whiplash. That one was more creative but this one fits better

It was just a joke. Do you know Habib from SoA? He's a nutty nutball who throws a scimitar at the party.

I had forgotten about him so I'm afraid the joke was lost on me. I started a CúChoinneach run but discovered that it was bugged. I think for the Drizzt game that I would have ended up overpowered. Hence I decided to play an Undead Hunter, a class that I haven't played at all for years and when I did play it, it was just twice. Therefore something new. In my current set-up there are a LOT of undead in BG1, so it should be a fairly good choice.

Baldr010.jpg
Baldr011.jpg

My improved assassins were proving to be a little TOO powerful so I asked for a little help! I'd just used a potion! On the plus side that's free plate armour on the ground!

Baldr012.jpg

I beat Zargos Flintblade with no difficulty but Greywolf was a different matter altogether. After using three blue potions and cure light wounds I changed tactics and lured him towards the guards at the mine. Their arrows brought him to near death so I then led him away from them. [ I wanted the experience!] Again a difficult battle, but this time I had more health points than he had with the result that I prevailed and immediately levelled up to level 3. At that level the battle may have been quite a bit easier. At least I now have a +2 sword!

Alena, Halfling Priest of Lathander, Canon Party Run: The Druid Grove- Practice, Practice

With the expanded team looking to explore their capacities, and I in need of mixed party practice in a safe environment, we continued on through the druid grove. We fought three battles. Two of these were handled well, with no injuries. One was mishandled, causing Minsc to get hit by a shambling mound on a roll of 18. That shouldn't have happened and if I were on my game it wouldn't have. Still, I feel we're getting better. After a few more minor encounters we'll be ready for Spellhold.

For the spore colony encounter, we let Jaheira, Minsc, Aerie and Haer'Dalis charge ahead together. With Jaheira under Ironskins, Minsc under Ilbratha II, and Aerie and Haer'Dalis running their arcane protections, they could all fight with negligible risk of injury. Alena's AC would keep her safe on all but a crit, but I decided to hold her back, nonetheless. Here we see the party charging while Alena tries out a Holy Smite. My guess was that spores were neutral, but a test could do no harm. Had Minsc not been busy he could have used his Detect Evil. In the future I'll be giving Alena a Detect Evil at L1 for situations like this.
Screenshot 2024-07-25 at 9.06.19 AM.jpg
Since I'll be making a lot of mistakes as I reacquaint myself with mixed party play, we can play a BG tactical version of Where's Waldo. I'll let you know when I know of one to be found. If you see one let me know. We can play our first round now. Go to the first screenshot, the one above. There was an objectively wrong move there, one that foreshadowed the mistake that led to an injury later on.

Moving on through the myconids. Most of the spore colonies were killed before they could summon. Whenever a batch of myconids did appear, Aerie used a Sunfire to clear the way. We expected to draw the trolls in here, but we didn't care. They can't hurt us. Like the myconid, their only hope is to land a crit on Minsc and get lucky a second time rolling against his Illbratha MIs.
Screenshot 2024-07-25 at 9.08.15 AM.jpg
A few myconids vectored off to Alena. With an effective AC of -14, she was pretty safe. Still, I thought it best to Sanctuary her. A hit here or there doesn't matter, ofc, but driving the enemy hit rate down to zero is a good way to practice in minor encounters. If Alena had had her Blade Barrier up, I'd have let her keep fighting
Screenshot 2024-07-25 at 9.09.06 AM.jpg
The trolls got Sunfires and Holy Smites. Alena was pleased to be back in the action.
Screenshot 2024-07-25 at 9.09.42 AM.jpg
Nice work, team. Let's try another
Screenshot 2024-07-25 at 9.09.51 AM.jpg
The shambling mound encounter was a little sloppy. With the spiders and shambling mounds attempting to flank the party by traveling over the bridge, auto-attacks caused us to space out. I should use those less. Our spacing prevented us from refreshing our Defensive Harmony, putting the now MI less Minsc in danger of being struck. As our only non-skinned or MIed warrior, Minsc should have been running RoAC II here. He also should have been wearing his Girdle of Bluntness, not the Girdle of Piercing he had donned for the trolls. All told, there was no reason for Minsc to be struck on an 18. That was just me begin sloppy. In solo play I always check my inventory before combat. In my arcane party runs I tend not to do that, since items don't matter in most encounters. With this crew I should do a check each time. I'll do that going forward.
Screenshot 2024-07-25 at 9.11.08 AM.jpg
For the grizzly bears we had Aerie and Haer'Dalis deploy their Web sequencers. We're not running Free Action now, so we can't charge in, but we have our ranged weapons. We also have Kitthix, Alena's aerial sevant and Minsc's Mr. Efreeti. Mr. Efreeti can be webbed, but he has fireballs. We'll just need to hold him back.
Screenshot 2024-07-25 at 9.15.24 AM.jpg
I was too distracted by Cernd's incatation -yes Cernd's- to notice that the bears in front of Jaheira had saved against Web. She shouldn't have been using her sling here. I was super curious about what Cernd was up to, though. Charm Animal or Person on Alena's aerial servant? What? As DJ Run said, in the 1988 cult classic Tougher than Leather, "You better crawl under those boxes and get your fingers fixed." Yes, it makes no sense. That's why I love it. It's also why it's fitting for Cernd here.
Screenshot 2024-07-25 at 9.16.38 AM.jpg
Blast away, Mr. Efreeti. I'm pretty sure Cernd isn't trying to charm you right now.
Screenshot 2024-07-25 at 9.17.26 AM.jpg
A quick test of the Harp of Discord. Aerie was glad to see it put to use. She'd been lugging it around ever since the Planar Prison, sort of her carried torch.
Screenshot 2024-07-25 at 9.18.17 AM.jpg
Check out that poor northern bear. Held by the Web, confused by Haer'Dalis's harp, and held by Cernd -yet Cernd's- Hold Monster. Glad you're on our side, Nature Boy- we weren't sure at first.
Screenshot 2024-07-25 at 9.18.27 AM.jpg
And done. We're sucking less but we're still not ready for Spellhold.
Screenshot 2024-07-25 at 9.19.33 AM.jpg

Best,

A.

Hunter Final Entry.

Going solo he reached level 4 and thinking that he was well enough protected, took on the sirines.

He wasn't.

I think that he was both stunned and confused. It was a VERY slow death, 2 hp at a time, but it was also a very certain death.

I think that I'll start again with him, but before doing so will do some gardening. Solo doesn't leave any room for error!

Agreed. It’s debatable whether soloing is harder than partying in reload games. In no reload games it’s not, at least for me. In my solo games, my play needs to be on point, always. In a party run, like Alena’s, I can make a zillion mistakes and it doesn’t matter.

On a scale from 1 to 10 I’d give myself an 8 as a soloist, 9 when I’m not rusty. Running a mixed party, like Alena’s, I’d give myself a 4. Nonetheless, Alena has been far, far safer than any of my solo characters. She’s never been in danger at all.

It’s a fun challenge to play with though, isn’t it? Best of luck in your next attempt!

Might be that Agent Boo forgot to tell Minsc to sheathe Ilbratha once he got his MIs up. That FoTA would have helped...

Exactly. Minsc usually keeps Ilbratha in his third weapon slot, where it's never used. I had sent Ilbratha over to Haer'Dalis in the troll mound, and when I gave it back to Minsc, for the myconid encounter, I neglected to unclick it after dropping it into his weapon slot. Had I checked his inventory I would have noticed this. I also would have noticed he was still wearing his Girdle of Piercing.

FoTA for Minsc, nice. Some flail pips (Defender of Easthaven/hardiness I assume eventually, free dual wield, etc) for Minsc in this group makes sense for multiple reasons.

That makes me wonder, are folks respeccing proficiencies via NI/EEKeeper or a mod, or giving him pips ingame through natural level up progression (or using weapons without proficiencies!)?
Nothing wrong with the former imo, especially in cases like Anomen with EE/Fixpack giving him that silly 2 pips in spears instead of flails just because of a tall tale he tells ingame (which everyone including Jan knows, is a fairytale!), I'm just curious... although organic/levelup assignments do feel better usually. One of the reasons I favor EET installs (in spite of the pain of installation and the inevitable bugs) is things like giving Imoen a bunch of points in Detect Illusions along with DEX 19 completely organically; makes life so much better with SCS runs.

Good question! I accept the NPCs as they are and use natural level progression. I tried SCS's NPC management component. I didn't like it. The NPCs didn't feel like the NPCs anymore, and I shouldn't be able to dictate the past of my companions. I also found the component buggy. It led to XP anomalies that I'd rather not deal with, especially since I see no upside.

While I don't like SCS's NPC management component, I could see myself using Near Infinity to align the trilogy NPCs with their BG1 counterparts. I haven't done that with Minsc for Jaheira, but I'm considering it in Imoen's case. Undecided.

I've also gone that route :) - using NI to duplicate my hard work on previous EET runs when I decide I just don't have time/energy for another EET install/run through BG1.

Some of my standard personal tweaks:

- Lvl 1 NPC mod to make Kivan an Archer rather than vanilla Ranger (which totally makes sense - the original didn't have access to kits obviously).
- EE assigns Sling proficiency to Dynaheir which seems odd. In the original game she started with Missile Weapons under the old proficiency system. I replace Sling with a pip in Darts using either Lvl 1 NPC mod or NI.
- Anomen's questionable spear pips to flail. Jan knows bs when he hears it.
- NPC Kitpack to give Adventurer kit to Imoen and Nalia; this might be more questionable but neither are really backstabbers and benefit more from becoming better with locks and traps (leaves more points for other things).

My current install I'm trying out Artisan's kitpack for the first time and have Minsc assigned a unique version of Rashemi Berserker (which iirc was an actual 2e kit and what Minsc was supposed to be); it significantly improves the usefulness of his special Berserk ability and restricts him from armor heavier than splint, plus option to put 3 pips in a melee weapon/only 1 pip in ranged. It feels like a much better fit for Minsc - he gets beat up a lot more but hits harder, and berserk is more useful (still inferior to Berserker fighter kit).

He's going to cherish getting a hold of Ilbratha even more now. :ROFLMAO:

Cool, cool! Any chance you'll share your run here?
I would love to post some highlights when I manage to free up time and energy (as well as get over a bit of a perfectionist streak when it comes to my own writing). One thing that doesn't help the cause is that I've always been horrible about remembering to take screen shots while gaming.

I'm also currently a little less than inspired after the one run that I was excited about ended prematurely (Bandit Camp). I do have another one in early SoA that's still ongoing/no reload but for whatever reason I'm just ... not all that excited/enthused about that one, and it's going really slowly. I may have to start another one from Candlekeep eventually but that just feels like a pretty big time commitment right now.

I'm also considering a new no/low reload run through Pathfinder Kingmaker which I've never finished completely (though I've gotten close)... decisions, decisions - so many options, but only so much time/energy.

Alena, Halfling Priest of Lathander, Canon Party Run: The Planar Sphere Revisited- Practice, Practice

When I run parties I like to have a set of game plans, a playbook if you will. In recent episodes, Alena and her team have been working out plays and practicing them. Our most recent stop was the Planar Sphere, where we worked Alena’s new L7 into one of our now standard game plans, Sticky Business.

First, we had to take care of the golems. We left them earlier because they were more trouble than they were worth. Now they're practice and free XP. Since golems are such unusual enemies, we couldn’t deploy a generic plan here. Instead we had to tailor something just for them. Sounds good, said Alena. She now has a spell that’s perfect for the job.

Our approach to the first golem batch harkened back to the early Aerie rules all strategies. We sent Aerie up ahead, with summons as her vanguard, in this case fire elementals. Once Aerie and the summons established a defensive line, we started bringing others into the action. Here we see Jaheira's fire elemental engaging the golems, while Aerie advances, forming a secondary line. That protection furnished Alena the opportunity to cast, in this case the newly acquired Firestorm.
Screenshot 2024-07-25 at 3.01.18 PM.jpg
Aerie is Melfing here, because why not, but the elementals and Firestorm were more than enough.
Screenshot 2024-07-25 at 3.02.36 PM.jpg
No injuries here, no attacks on party members at all.
Screenshot 2024-07-25 at 3.02.53 PM.jpg
Same strategy for golem batch two. The only distinction here is that we used Fleshy and Mr. Efreeti as our advanced line since the golems were too close to our entrance point. Once again, no attacks against party members.
Screenshot 2024-07-25 at 3.13.35 PM.jpg
On to the final batch. This time Jaheira's fire elemental are leading the way again. Since Alena only has one L7, we couldn't use Firestorm. Instead we used physical attacks. Aerie, is melfing. Jaheira is leveraging Belm's speed factor 0. Minsc will soon use his range 2 weapon. In my view, everyone should have a range 2 weapons, just like everyone should have a non-magical weapon.
Screenshot 2024-07-25 at 3.18.56 PM.jpg
Once again, no incoming attacks. Well done, everyone.
Screenshot 2024-07-25 at 3.23.17 PM.jpg
Finally, we had a chance to try Sticky Business. Note that at current levels this plan is only suited for melee enemies. Once Alena's level is higher, and we have our Limited Wish baby globes, we could consider using it against mixed groups but I doubt I'll proceed with that.

Anyhoo, the lizard men are our test subjects wish them luck. And, yes, Jaheira, that was entirely too much buffing, but we need to practice our order and synchronization to maximize our full buff time.
Screenshot 2024-07-25 at 5.04.46 PM.jpg

Let's begin. We start invisible. Aerie and Haer'Dalis, the characters that we want to draw aggro break first, opening with Web sequencers.
a.jpg
The party fans out forming a defensive perimeter around Alena, granting her the space to cast her Firestorm. Naturally, all party members are running FA and ProFire.
Screenshot 2024-07-25 at 5.06.34 PM.jpg
With the room suited to a triangular formation, we let the arcane protected characters handle the sides individually while the relatively vulnerable characters, Minsc and Jaheira team up. Jaheira, with her shield and skins draws ago. Minsc, with his FoA flanks, hoping to apply slow, reducing pressure on his teammate, Jaheira. If you're wondering why Minsc isn't running his MIs it's because of a bug. Ilbratha MI is subject to a magic resistance check. In this case it didn't pass. I need to fix that. All in all, I'd call this a successful practice session. Alena should have had her Blade Barrier up, though.
Screenshot 2024-07-25 at 5.07.48 PM.jpg
These practice battles have helped us identify gaps in Aerie and Haer'Dalis's spell books. Haer'Dalis needs MMM, obviously. Less obviously, Aerie needs Luck. There will be fights when it makes sense for Aerie and Haer'Dalis to have emergency Luck + MI sequencers. Haer'Dalis knows both spells already. Aerie doesn't. We need to fix that. The next thing I need to do is take a moment to work out, on paper, our optimal spell slot allocation and buff order practices, factoring in spell durations, II untargettability and spell defenses. I'll do that this evening. Once I've worked out the order, we'll spend a few game days resting and rebuffing. We're not leaving for Spellhold until we're ready.

Best,

A.
