Conan, Barbarian Dwarf: Part 31 – One Last Drink

Conan returned to the main part of Pocket Plane after the battle with the Ravager. The air felt heavier than before, as if the place itself knew the end was close. For the first time in what felt like forever, Imoen was waiting for him — sitting on one of the stone benches, legs crossed, pretending not to have been pacing moments earlier.
Hey, you’re alive. Again,” she said, forcing a smile.

They talked for a while — nothing important, just small things that didn’t matter but somehow did. Imoen was quieter than usual, looking at the glowing rift at the center of the plane. Finally, she said:
You know… this might be our last night before the end. How about we don’t spend it surrounded by floating rocks and doom energy? There’s a tavern down in Amkethran. Let’s go have a drink.

Conan smirked. “I like the sound of that.

They found a quiet corner in a half-empty tavern at the edge of the desert town. The place smelled of smoke and stale beer, the kind of establishment where the mugs were older than the patrons. Conan sat with his back to the wall, his trusty athlantean sword propped against the bench. Imoen stirred her drink with one finger, staring at the foam like it held answers.

The first few rounds went down fast. The second few went down easier. Before long, the sharpness in their words started to dull — the kind of haze that makes the world seem softer, or maybe just further away.

So…” she began. “After this, you will probably go home. Hyboria. Big skies, big swords, bigger egos.”

Conan nodded. “Aye. If the gods permit.

A ghost of a smile flickered on Imoen’s face. “You make it sound like a morning walk.

I’ve walked worse roads.” he replied, voice low and steady.

There was a pause — the kind that stretches too long and starts to sting.

You ever think about what happens after all this?” she asked quietly. “Like, if there’s nothing left to fight?

Conan shrugged. “Then I’ll find something. There’s always something.

Imoen laughed softly, but there was no humor in it. “Of course there is. Always another fight, another quest, another monster to hit until it stops moving.

He looked at her, confused. “You’re angry I might be going home?

No! I’m angry that’s all you think there is!” Her voice rose before she could stop it. “You win, you leave, you move on — like none of it ever mattered!” She stopped herself, realizing what she almost said. Like I don’t matter.

Conan blinked, unsure what to say. “You’ve got your world, Imoen. You’ll be fine.

Fine,” she breathed, too soft to sound angry at first — but then the mug hit the table hard enough to spill what was left of her drink. “Always fine. That’s me, right? The cheerful sidekick, holding your back, standing by you and pretending it doesn’t hurt.

Her laugh came out sharp and bitter, the kind that tried to hide the crack in her voice. “Gods, you really don’t get it. Screw you, Conan.

She turned before he could answer, shoulders rigid, boots scuffing against the floorboards as she strode to the door. The candle between them wavered, then went out, leaving him staring at the thin trail of smoke curling where her smile used to be.

Conan stared after her. For a long moment, he said nothing. Then he sighed and finished his drink.

The bartender, who had been pretending not to listen, polished a mug and said, “Woman, eh?

Conan gave a dry chuckle, barely more than an exhale. “Crom... I just don’t understand her.

The barkeep nodded wisely. “Best not to try, lad. Women and gods — both belong to mysteries we’re not meant to solve.

Conan dropped a few coins on the counter and stood. “Noted.”

Back in the Pocket Plane, the air shimmered again. Imoen was already there, waiting at the edge of the portal.

She looked up as he approached, cheeks faintly red. “Hey. Sorry. I… overreacted. You know me.

Conan gave a small nod. “And I said nothing wrong, yet somehow, I’m still sorry.

That drew a laugh out of her — quiet, breathless, but real. For a heartbeat, the silence between them felt almost peaceful.

A few moments later, as they prepared to step through the portal to the final battle, Imoen reached into her satchel and pulled out a small pendant shaped like a crescent moon.
It catches light when you’re in the dark,” she said, holding it out. “I thought… maybe if I can’t be there to keep an eye on you, this will.

Conan took it, heavy in his calloused palm. For a long moment he said nothing. “You made this?

She nodded, smiling despite herself. “There was a reason I was away so long before,” she said, brushing a strand of hair from her face. “The ingredients took time to find. Added a bit of my own magic, too. Won’t save you from everything — but maybe it’ll remind you that someone’s still out there watching your back.

He put it around his neck, giving a small nod. “If this thing shines when I’m in trouble,” he said, half-smiling, “you’d best start worrying.

Imoen’s smile faltered into something softer — genuine, but touched with sadness. “Yeah,” she murmured. “I probably will.

They stood there a moment longer — two souls bound by battle, pride, and everything they hadn’t said.
Then Conan turned, stepping through the portal.
The light flared, and Imoen followed close behind — her hand brushing the empty air where he’d stood.

The final battle awaited.

Conan, Barbarian Dwarf: Part 32 – Throne of Bhaal

As they stepped through the portal, a surge of wild magic tore through the air. Conan felt Imoen’s hand slip from his shoulder—then nothing. The light swallowed her, and when his vision cleared, he stood alone before the Throne.

Then a figure rose from the darkness.

I am Melissan, Guardian of the Throne—its last defender and its truest prisoner. Your blood has fed this place, Conan of Hyboria. Now it demands the rest.

The battle started, with Conan slowing her:
Screenshot (664).jpg
Unfortunately she summoned some reinforcements and things turned bad pretty fast. Not even Conan’s Blackrazor sword healed him fast enough to have a fair fight:
Screenshot (665).jpg
So he had to back away a bit, while he fought an army of Glabrezus:
Screenshot (667).jpg
And an army of Death Tyrants:
Screenshot (668).jpg
Luckily Conan managed to split Melissan from her servants. Unluckily, she cast timestop and summoned another servant - a Demon Knight this time. Conan got flashback from his fight in Underdark and put his Improved Mace of Disruption into offhand:
Screenshot (669).jpg
Then it was 1:1 vs Melissan. Even this wasn’t easy, but Conan switched between Flail of Ages to slow her and Blackrazor to heal and haste himself during the fight:
Screenshot (671).jpg
She fell, but it seemed it only made her withdraw and gather energy. In the meantime, Conan had to fight some air elementals. And also a Vampiric Wraith - he had to be always careful, one mistake, one time not having iMoD and he would be level drained and it would most likely mean his death:
Screenshot (672).jpg
Melissan came back with a pair of Glabrezus:
Screenshot (673).jpg
Luckily this time he already had a good plan and she went down fairly easily:
Screenshot (675).jpg
This time she returned with an army of Slayer Shadows:
Screenshot (676).jpg
And a time stop followed:
Screenshot (677).jpg
More shadows and Demon Knights surged forward:
Screenshot (679).jpg
After a while, a graveyard of monsters lay beneath Conan’s feet:
Screenshot (681).jpg
Most of the time, he fought with Defender of Easthaven in his main hand and iMoD in his offhand against the shadows and Demon Knights:
Screenshot (682).jpg
Against Melissan, he switched to FoA, keeping DoE in his offhand, while equipping his cold resist boots—good thing he had taken them from the Asylum:
Screenshot (683).jpg
After defeating her, he faced a Fallen Solar, who proved no challenge to Conan:
Screenshot (685).jpg
Then came a pair of Mariliths, far more formidable. They layered Protection from Magical Weapons every few rounds, and combined with Stoneskin, made them difficult to defeat. (Honestly, this battle alone probably took as long as the rest of the final fight.):
Screenshot (686).jpg
Melissan returned once more, but now she posed little threat to Conan:
Screenshot (689).jpg
And then, she fell:
Screenshot (690).jpg

Review of final battle:

I had high hopes that Blackrazor with DoE will be enough to fight against Melissan and her army, but unfortunately even with 80% damage resist and good healing it was not enough. Not to mention a risk of her summoning Demon Knight/Slayer Shadow and Conan having to equip iMoD. So I had to run around a lot and try to aggro them separately from her. Even that was not easy as all of them were formidable foes. For a while I got a bit depressed and was thinking of giving up. But in the end I found out that with good tactic of separating them it went relatively easy.

The hardest thing without doubt was switching the correct weapons all the time. One mistake could mean game over, as both Demon Knights and Shadow Slayers (and Vampiric Wraith and god know what else) can level drain. I did not want to counter it with barbarian rage as it was too risky in case it runs out, and they are limited. In the end a combination of DoE main hand and offhand iMoD proved best against them in case there were more than 1. Lot of times I was using Firetooth knife and running carefully around them (not to aggro Melissan as well) to save Hardiness for later. In the second last screenshot you can see that I still had quite a few abilities left when Melissan fell. But I though it's better to have too many than too few, so I took it slowly but safely.

Another hard thing was to keep my HP above 90ish to be on the safe side of PW: Stun. As both Demon Knights and Glabrezus do it (and maybe someone else, but I was not gonna find that out the hard way :D )

I am unsure whether she summons the minions forever, but I was gonna try it - i had enough healing/self healing with regen/blackrazor and a screenshot with bodies all around the throne would have been worth it :D. Luckily it never came to it.

One thing that surprised me were Mariliths. I think they put on PfMW every few rounds and stoneskin often as well. I was a bit worried about them as I don't know what arsenal they have (and I did not want to google too much) and whether they could somehow kill me. Firetooth wasn't good enough with their protection so in the end i went in with barbarian rage and FoA/Belm, followed by GWW when they started taking damage.

All in all, it was not easy and required 100% concentration all the time. Same as Sendai, one mistake can easily mean game over. At least compared to Sendai, this battle is not that chaotic. But on the other hand it took way longer and the concentration had to be spread out through the whole fight instead of 20 intense minutes as with Sendai.

I did not use Vhailor's Helm for this battle (only Sendai and Ravager) as there were too many phases and I tried to limit it's use in the run.

I did not write any story related post in this fight and just quickly introduced Melissan, tried to keep it technical. But an epilogue post will be coming to wrap up the story (once I decide how Conan/Imoen's story will end :D )

Having killed a dragon, numerous wyverns both in transit and in a cave, and then Drasus et al we are ready to enter the Cloakwood mines. I don't know why, but no dragon's body appeared when I killed it, and no treasure either. :(

Baldr155.jpg

Nightblade using stealth spotted a mage together with guards. We therefore buffed very carefully, summoning skeletons and casting: chant, bless, remove fear, strength of one and draw on holy might. The skeletons were sent on ahead and killed some guards whilst taking some of Hareishan's spells. When they died Nightblade located Hareishan whereupon Spellcaster cast web and I cast true sight. We then slew Hareishan and her men easily. Having used so many spells, we then went outside where we rested in relative safety. That battle couldn't have gone better. :)

Baldr157.jpg

We sent a skeleton against Natasha. She cast confusion which was ineffective. However she then cast a lightning bolt which killed the skeleton and rebounded into the corridor and hurt me badly. However we took time for healing before continuing the assault which was successful.

The ogre mage successfully cast confusion upon Nightblade. Therefore after killing the ogre mage we withdrew to allow the spell to wear off.

Web and skull traps were effective against the next party, so Davaeorn was next. Nightblade disabled the traps after which we sent our last skeleton against Davaeorn.

Together we slew him.

Now approaching Baldur's Gate.

We killed a proper dragon by using summons to avoid his attacks. The one in the last post wasn't a challenge!

Baldr167.jpg

We then went to Daerthmac castle to rescue the Mayor of Nashkel's son.

Baldr168.jpg

By keeping ourselves hidden, he didn't teleport away. Missed out on experience and over-powerful equipment. A good thing!!

I have now been asked to find Otho's nephew.

Baldr169.jpg

Have been to the Gate where I have been completing many small and fairly easy quests, leaving some to boost reputation in the future if necessary.
Now in Candlekeep and have reached the secret library. :)

We have taken on Durlag's Tower and have awakened the wardens. I approached love along with some buffed skeletons. I spoke to Love and when attacked, I and the skeletons entered the summoned stinking cloud. Once there I consumed a potion of invisibility. I then left the cloud leaving the skeletons to fight the warders. Who were being hurt by both the cloud and the skeletons. Love and fear fought each other, Love being killed. When the cloud dissipated my party attacked and prevailed. We then descended to a lower level where Islanne killed Spellcaster primarily with lightning bolt and other spells. I had to use a raise dead scroll.

Web followed by skull traps made the chess board so easy. Now have more magical arrows than I can carry. The skeleton archers were SO generous. Skulltrap was effective against them too. my thief located them, then a skull trap was placed in front of them.

The Demonknight battle was much easier this time. I summoned some skeleton warriors and they were effective but they weren't really needed as the enemy killed each other. I used a charge of my summon monsters wand, but it was wasted as they weren't needed.

No point in doing a screenshot as all the action took place out of sight.

Killed the assassins outside and then went to a store to sell all +1 weapons from my bag of holding. Now have 150,000 gp.

Now seems to be a good time to make some major purchases before dealing with Sarevok.

Now down to 15gp after making some major purchases. It looks like I won't have to buy any wands in Dragonspear if I get that far.

End of run.

Have rescued Duke Eltan. We killed Slythe easily and sent some skeletons to kill Krysten which they did, but not before killed a number of courtesans with Cloudkill.

I picked up a selection of clothes in case I find myself a girlfriend..

Defeated Sarevok at the Dukal Palace and have now reached Tamoko in the maze.

We will exit, rest at an inn and buy further provisions.

Returned and Final Battle did not go according to plan. At the end Sarevok was near death, but sadly I was dead.

A shame. I usually win that battle. ☹️

Ryland (human blade) & Kalam (halfling assassin by @Finarfin), multiplayer run: Part 14

First of all, I apologize for the unfashionably long delay in reporting on our progress. The sessions I’m about to cover have actually taken place already in July and unfortunately my recollection of the events is far from fresh. What I do remember very clearly though, is that we were certainly relieved to make it out of the Chateau in one piece (or at least in half a piece each).

1762273367304.jpeg

Unlike the claustrophobic dungeon, where our minds had been singularly focused on escaping the place, the streets of Athkatla suddenly offered opportunities. Like sleeping in a comfortable bed, for instance.

1762273352056.jpeg

Healed, rested, and freshly levelled up to L11 at 220k XP, Ryland and Kalam were more than ready to start exploring the city. First, we decided to give away a meaningful sum of 800gp to the Ilmater temple – that would’ve been a very Ilmater thing to do, were it not for the fact that it was actually an investment supported by projected future returns on our reputation.
1762273404502.jpeg
We spotted a poster for a guild war dance-off taking place at the Promenade later that night and decided to witness the action. It was Hareishan versus three Shadow Thieves, and it was ON. The former, rocking her belly dancer attire, clearly got the upper hand and not even their classic RUN-D.M.C. set was enough to save the unfortunate trio from getting totally served. Collecting the loot left behind by the losing team covered the cost of the recent temple donation, plus we also got a free Stoneskin scroll for Ryland.
1762273420978.jpeg
By running Friends, we managed to push down Ribald’s price for RoAC below 4k, plus we also expanded our emerging potion collection with PoI, Potion of Freedom, Potion of Strength (Ray of Enfeeblement counter), Firebreath, and 2x Oil of Speed.

Let’s fast forward to the Slums, where Gaelan Bayle invited us over for a lunch. At first, we thought it’s just the lingering effect of Ryland’s Friends spell, but it turned out that he just wanted to make an unsolicited sales pitch, confirming there’s no such thing as a free lunch. In the end, the offer he presented didn’t surprise us as much as the fact that people in Amn actually don’t take off their shoes at home.

Anyway, we confirmed that we’ll be back with the money, aye, and went for a piña colada in the Coronet to figure out our next move. And since we’ve become reasonably good at killing things, not to mention that Kalam’s CV explicitly mentions “a dedicated professional with a passion for seeking new targets”, violence was certainly an option.

Bam!
1762273441913.jpeg
The remaining cell guards were taken down under Shield and MSD, although we did suffer some injuries on account of our sub-par AC.
1762273479153.jpeg
For the beastmaster, we prepared a few traps and buffed with Haste and MIs. Hoping to score a cheap win, Ryland tapped a Charm Person scroll, although the attempt had failed and we needed to pull back.
1762273500288.jpeg
1762273505816.jpeg
With traps, Emotion: Hopelessness, Fireball, and a lot of kiting, we were able to make good progress at thinning down the animal ranks.
1762273519933.jpeg
1762273524417.jpeg
1762273542811.jpeg
1762273547006.jpeg
Eventually, the beastmaster fell to Kalam’s backstab.
1762273582653.jpeg
Acting on a tip from Hendak, whom by then has taken over the management duties from Lehtinan, we went about exploring the local sewers. Scouting ahead with a rogue under arcane ProFire, while blasting the enemies with a Fireball at a distance, remains as good as it had been back in the Stone Age, when the strategy had been invented shortly after the wheel.
1762273628504.jpeg
1762273660469.jpeg
The scorched hobgoblin shashlik drew the attention of the resident otyugh - we needed to recycle the ranged Poison Weapon trick that Kalam had proof-tested earlier on in the Chateau.
1762273647263.jpeg
Kalam’s traps & backstab combo were too much to handle for the kobold shaman.
1762273727022.jpeg
1762273731555.jpeg
We didn’t feel ready to storm the slaver boat yet, so instead we just retrieved Lilarcor* and proceeded to collect some low-hanging fruit in the Bridge District. I was about to say that it had to be low hanging - since it was Kalam doing most of the work there - but then I cringed.

*Note: Normally, Lilarcor’s charm and confusion immunity would be a boon for bards in early SoA. But if swapping items during combat requires total concentration even in a single player game, then pulling it off in a fast-paced multiplayer can become even bigger challenge. To make things more complicated still, Ryland’s base STR score of 13 means that he’s unable to equip Lilarcor without first buffing his strength (which is one of the reasons you’ll often see him running Strength, even when fighting at range).

The errands in the Bridge District involved collecting the Horn, solving the Skinner murders, and looting Saerk’s place, which we managed to accomplish without killing any of the guards (with the exception of the unfortunate soul guarding the trapped safe). We also obtained a pair of Stone Form potions from Ms Cragmoon and fought off a hi-jack by the local mugger quartet.
1762273898072.jpeg
1762273936903.jpeg
1762273941889.jpeg
Following a successful day trip to Watcher’s Keep, the purpose of which was to fix a looming inventory management crisis by securing a potion case from Sister Garlena, the boys were back in town.

With Azuredge in hand (and the Littleman in the off-hand), we were ready to set foot into the Graveyard District. As far as the Crypt King was concerned, Kalam first softened him with an opening backstab. Thanks to his shorty saving throws paired with the Claw, he was also able to elicit the opening Horror cast before Ryland stepped in and finished the job with Azuredge.
1762273976578.jpeg
1762273983103.jpeg
While Namarra was ours and the Littleman got safely delivered, our subsequent hunt for a Spell Shield* scroll proved fruitless - the skeleton warriors in the tombs only dropped minor treasure.
1762273996638.jpeg
*Note: As of SCS v35, Spell Shield scrolls are no longer available at any of the shops until Underdark.

Ryland (human blade) & Kalam (halfling assassin by @Finarfin), multiplayer run: Part 14 - continued

Suna Seni caught up with us shortly after our departure from the Graveyard District.

1762274337777.jpeg

Arriving invisible allowed us to take our buffs (comprising Resist Fear, Haste, Strength, Shield, II + RoAC II for Kalam), prepare two traps, and summon the berserker warrior before engaging.
1762274356617.jpeg
Kalam opened with a successful backstab on the mage.
1762274364277.jpeg
Before he could fall back towards the traps, he got backstabbed in return by the rogue. Ryland covered Kalam’s retreat by dropping his 10d6 Fireball towards the enemy party, which eliminated half of their numbers.
1762274388023.jpeg
The summoned skeleton warrior was dropped by one of our traps, leaving the other one ready for Suna (who was currently keeping herself occupied with the tanking berserker).
1762274394679.jpeg
1762274398875.jpeg
Eventually, she was taken down with ranged attacks under Slow, making the remaining slaver archer easy pickings. The total bill was two extra healers, but adding Arbane to our arsenal is certainly worth more than that.

Journal of Nick the Knife

I escaped to Beregost where I used my thieving skills to boost my experience. I headed south having reached level 3.

We killed two ogrillon and returned a letter to Mirianne before heading north where we helped Joia, Now level 4.

Baldr004.jpg

I came across a powerful assassin south of Nashkel and was forced to flee, however upon returning I prevailed, largely due yo an effective backstab!

Baldr005.jpg
Baldr006.jpg

I then fought Greywolf with the help of the Amnish guards who hurt him badly. However, it took all of my skill and wisdom to prevail.

Baldr008.jpg
Baldr009.jpg

Baldr010.jpg

A long and tiring battle due to the fact that I am no warrior.

Upon reuniting Albert and Rufie I reached level 5. :)

Killing Vax was easy, not so Zal. That was also a prolonged battle.

Baldr011.jpg
Baldr012.jpg

Calso was killed with ease, not so Krumm, and the nearby dire wolves were equally challenging..

Baldr013.jpg
Baldr114.jpg

I killed Ingot before returning to Beregost for more throwing daggers. Heading eastward, I picked up Perdue's lost sword and after killing a couple of skeletons, I gained yet more throwing daggers.

I came across an adventurer called Trungle who sold me a potion of Master Thievery. That was very useful as it enabled me to pickpocket Algernon's Cloak!

Wearing that, enabled the buying of more equipment at the carnival.

I have just discovered that a wig that I was wearing made me lawful evil. Not knowing that could have had catastrophic consequences! No wonder I wasn't wanted as a babysitter! It looks like I will have to investigate the properties of ALL wigs and clothes!!

Reputation currently 19. Chaotic good again!

Used the cloak to charm someone to face Bassilus. He took some of the spells, but nevertheless rigid thinking was cast on me. Despite that, I won.

I lured Zargal away from his cohorts and then used backstabs to kill him, using rocks to hide behind and then backstab.

I am not enjoying this run. I have had to spend far too much time fleeing. I much prefer Fighters, Clerics and Fighter/Clerics, so I am currently abandoning this run for the time being despite the fact that I am doing OK.

Conan, Barbarian Dwarf: Part 33 – Epilogue

As Conan stood before the Throne of Bhaal, the air behind him shimmered.
Out of the fading light, Imoen appeared—pale, exhausted, but alive.

You ok? What happened?” Conan asked, his voice rough from the fight.

Imoen shook her head slowly, eyes glimmering with something between relief and sorrow.
I tried to follow,” she said. “But… something stopped me. The portal— it wouldn’t take me through. Maybe it was destiny, or whatever gods still meddle here. This part—this fight—it had to be yours alone. The Throne chose you, Conan.

She gave a faint, tired smile. “Guess even the gods knew better than to let me get in your way.”

Conan grunted softly, not trusting himself to answer.

Then, light spilled across the chamber—pure, blinding, almost gentle.
A Solar descended, its radiance scattering the shadows left by Melissan’s fall. Its voice was calm, neither cruel nor kind.

Conan of Hyboria,” it said, “you have conquered the Throne and the darkness within it. Now, the choice is yours.

It extended one shining hand.

“You may ascend, and take the power of a god for yourself—immortal, unending, forever bound to this place.
You may destroy the Throne, end the legacy of Bhaal, and free the world from its curse—though such power will vanish forever.
Or…
” The Solar’s gaze softened. “You may return home—to the lands of Hyboria, to your own world and your own fate. But once you leave, this realm will never know your name again.

The chamber fell silent. Even the echoes of battle seemed to hold their breath, waiting for Conan’s answer.

Behind him, Imoen waited, silent but restless. Her hands twisted together, her eyes darting between the godlike figure and the man who’d somehow walked through every impossible fight and still come out breathing. She didn’t say anything. She didn’t have to.

Conan’s gaze lingered on the Throne for a moment longer. The power that pulsed there was ancient—older than kingdoms, older than even the will of gods. He could feel it calling to him, whispering promises of strength without end.
But he’d heard enough whispers in his life.

He looked down at his hands—scarred and strong, mortal. Hyboria was written into his blood, his bones. And he knew, deep down, that no throne of gods could ever give him what he already had: the right to carve his own path with his own hands.

Imoen’s voice finally broke the silence, trembling. “You don’t have to decide now. Maybe… maybe there’s another way. Maybe you could—

He turned toward her, and for a moment, the fierce warrior and the tired girl just stared at each other. There was no battle left between them—only the ache of goodbye.

I decided long ago,” Conan said quietly. “Before this war. Before any of it.

He glanced once more at the fading light of the Throne, then back at her. His voice was steady, deep, carrying that weight of finality only men like him could muster.
I’m going home. To Hyboria. To my own body. And I will claim my own kingdom.

For a heartbeat, the world seemed to stop. Then Imoen’s face crumpled—the proud, defiant mask she always wore breaking apart in an instant. Her eyes filled with tears, spilling freely down her cheeks as she shook her head.

You stupid barbarian,” she whispered, her voice breaking between sobs. “Why can’t you ever choose the easy road?

Conan gave a faint smile—small, but warm, and maybe the closest thing to tenderness he had left. “It’s the only one I know.

Imoen took a shaky breath, trying to speak again, but no words came. She just stepped forward and wrapped her arms around him, holding him like she could anchor him here.
Conan didn’t pull away. He placed a rough, scarred hand on the back of her head, letting her cry, letting himself feel the weight of what he was about to leave behind.

When she finally stepped back, her eyes were red but shining. “Don’t you dare forget me,” she said softly.

He met her gaze, steady and certain. “You made sure I couldn’t,” he said, touching the small crescent pendant at his belt. It caught the Throne’s light — faint, but unyielding — just like her.

The Solar raised its hand, and the chamber filled with a rising hum of divine power. A portal opened — brilliant, searing, alive with the promise of what lay beyond.

Imoen reached out, as if to stop him, but Conan only smiled that quiet, impossible smile of his. “Tell your gods,” he said, voice low and proud, “that Conan of Cimmeria walked his own path.

Then, without another word, he turned toward the light. His shadow stretched long behind him — a warrior’s silhouette against eternity.

He stepped through the portal.
And into the unknown adventures that awaited him beyond the stars.

Imoen didn’t stay still for long. She said goodbye to gods, demons, and destiny, and took up her pack once more — just her, her sharp tongue, her clever hands, and a map that changed itself whenever she blinked too long at it. She crossed roads that led under starless skies and through markets full of languages no one back home had names for. And wherever she went, she told stories of Conan — “the grumpiest hero who ever lived, and the best one too” — to anyone who would listen, and to a stubborn few who wouldn’t.

Sometimes the telling made her laugh.
Sometimes it made her quiet.

On certain nights, when the world around her slept and the moon hung full and silver, Imoen would stop walking. She would turn her face upward, as though she could see past the veil of realms. Her hand hovered just a breath away from the memory of his belt, where the crescent-shaped pendant had caught the glow of distant stars.

Because she knew it was shining somewhere.
She felt it.

Not magic — something older.

She liked to imagine him beneath another sky, athlantean sword strapped across his back, eyes narrowed in that stubborn way of his — pushing forward, always forward, toward the kingdom he meant to carve with his own hands.

And on those nights, she smiled.

Not sadly.
Just softly.

Because they had walked through hell and back, and neither of them walked alone anymore — not really.

Not ever.

Recap of the whole run:

During the whole run, there were two close to death experiences.

First one the trap in Slaver's ship next to Copper Coronet. Totally my mistake of misplacing the trap as a carrion crawler from sewers was chasing me.

Another time Conan almost died was in De'arnise keep. I ended the game one evening after defeating the golems and I got curse. Next time I played I forgot about the curse (since I had claw, it was the same icon on the portrait). And 2 stacks of trolls appeared on first level (where i previously cleared everything) and HP was going down, even though I was healing myself. And to top it off, the secret entrance out of the keep is not usable for some reason (it's only one way in my install-weird design choice). Potion of invisibility saved me from disaster.

Had to counter 3 mazes as well, Warden and a drow mage were easier with Barbarian Rage, but Abazigal I had to use one protection from magic scroll. I think he has casting time 1 and it's super hard to counter it pro-actively. How do people do this? Just use scroll or pump up magic protection potion along with equip? I had to use scroll here with my Cavalier as well, who same as Conan had 50% magic resist.

Having rage and protection from almost every game ending status is invaluable. Minus is that it gives you sense of security and it's easy to forget to reapply it again after 5 rounds. Luckily shorty saves were a good backup.

Extra speed is good whole game - from running and using range, to just backing out of fight to regroup. Not to mention I hate running around the town from place to place and this made it easier.

Downside of not having heavy armor becomes irrelevant by ToB as AC does not really matter if you don't max it out. I used human skin later and the MR from it was really good. I ended up having 50% MR with Ring of Gaxx, Human Skin, Hell Trial and Amulet of Seldarine.

20% extra physical resists and extra HP were game changers in ToB. With DoE in offhand and having option to use blackrazor main hand, Conan was almost invincible. Never started with Blackrazor as main weapon in big fights as not to dispel improved haste , but switched to it after first dispel. Blackrazor was nice to have, but not game changing in itself.

Thanks to the 20% extra resist, most of ToB wasn't as hard as expected. I used Vhailor's Helm only for Sendai and Ravager. Even with it, SCS Sendai was hard and I still don't know how to win the fight without the helm as fighter (probably survive until Planetar casts firestorm and then run around letting it kill everyone, and hope teleport field doesn't screw you - not the safest tactic)

All in all, barbarian was strong from level 1 to finish of ToB. Only time the char felt weaker was after coming out of Irenicus's dungeon and that did not last long. And most importantly, I think barbarian was a lot of fun and I enjoyed the run a lot.

Luckily it seems noone cast imprisonment on me when I played solo (they did in a party), because that would be a sad way to go.

One thing I have to mention is that by the time I wrote introduction/chapter 1, I already defeated Melissan with Conan. I did not want to make the same mistake as with Luke, where I concentrated more on writing than playing, and ended up stupidly dying in the end.

All in all, I am unsure how I made it. Kind of bittersweet that it ended, both for the gameplay and for the story that evolved during the run.

My origins are in Cloakwood where my clan Orothiar had a mine before it was taken over by our enemies. It is my desire to bring the clan back from almost extinction.
I survived because my mother had taken me to the surface in search of nuts and berries when the assault came. We fled, but a poison arrow caused my mother to breathe her last. Fortunately for me, I was found by Gorion who raised me.

You can imagine my dismay when I discovered that my sword, "Snakebite," had been pilfered, as it was my only connection with my mother. I immediately set off in search of the thief, and discovered that I was not the only victim of his larceny. One item was leather armour. It is no stronger than my splint mail, but I can use my thieving abilities whilst wearing it and in addition it protects me from poison, so it is well worth having. It feels so good to have recovered "Snakebite." After its recovery, I used it to eliminate another assassin.

:)
After the ambush, I headed for the FAI where I returned Joia's ring. Now in Beregost after delivering a letter to Mirianne.

I went to Nashkel picking up Colquetle amulet on the way. I was given a ring by Lord Foreshadow and to the sputheast picked up a magical ring. I was given a scroll and agreed to take Samuel to the FAI.
Upon doing that I became a hero. :)
After helping Tenya, she joined me and was most helpful against Bassilus. We helped Perdue and Alanna's neighbour and were rewarded handsomely for killing Bassilus.

Baldr096.jpg

We also killed Zargal

Baldr065.jpg

and some powerful wolves.

Baldr093.jpg
Baldr094.jpg

Our reputation is now 19.
We went hunting ankhegs gaining 10,000 gold pieces from the sale of their shells. That will enable me to furnish Tenya quite well.

On the body of an ogre we found a belt which protectd against piercing weapons. A dwarf said that he could improve it for 10,000 gp and a potion of fire giant strength.

We have the gold, but not the potion. Upon investigating all the merchants, we bought the potion and had the belt improved. I then bought a decent hammer for Tenya which left us somewhat impoverished and we could still do with some decent armour for her. There was some for sale, but we need to earn over 1000gp firsr.

In the basilisk area we were attacked by adventurers. They were strong but unwise. Kirian cast two lightning bolts and though they killed our skeletons, she also killed both herself and another party member. A shame that. We didn't get the experience, and we had already almost killed Lindin. [Note to self: only send one skeleton at a time against mages!]

Baldr101.jpg

Lightning proved to be far more dangerous than our enemies! However, we went to the Carnival for well earned rest and recuperation.

Aerie asked for help against Zordral. When he turned hostile, I fled before returning whilst stealthed. One backstab and he was dead. :) I had planned to lure him outside to some waiting skeletons, but that proved to be unecessary.

Baldr033.jpg

I am becoming quite a good thief!!

Tenya now wants me to search out somebody who can show her how to use her bowl.

At Gullykin we returned Smeagol's Precious and we were attacked by assassins stronger than us, so we fled to the carnival where we rested.

At last we found Lethe. She almost killed Tenya, but Tenya was tough enough to survive.

Baldr035.jpg

We then returned to Gullykin to kill the assassins there.

Baldr036.jpg

At the Nashkel mines, we killed both Zargos Flintblade and Greywolf.

Baldr037.jpg

When I took on Shoal I didn't even get to fight. Her initial spell killed me. :( I'm thinking that perhaps I would have survived if I had gone berserk before she spoke to me.

Upon donning a wig that I found near the site of Gorion's demise, I have discovered that people think more highly of me, fancy, a Berserker being of Lawful Good alignment.

Baldr006.jpg

I supplied Imoen with leather armour and a long sword and left her at Beregost where I did a few trivial quests.

{Having discovered the attributes of the wig, I may try playing a Lawful Good Blackguard in the future. 😂 The question is, does it change the character's alignment, or merely onlookers' perceptions of your alignment ? No doubt subsequent actions will let us know. Whilst in my set-up, the helm of opposite alignment has been removed, this wig looks to be a substitute. It doesn't have the attributes of a helm though, and it can be used by anybody.]

Baldr007.jpg

I reached Nashkel, where, because of the wig, I was allowed to babysit Tom and Sarah and thus gain an extra reputation of 1.

I reached level 3 and now have *** in daggers and ** in two weapon style.

To the south I was attacked by the assassin Zargos Flintblade. I fled towards the mine entrance where he was injured badly by the guards there. I then led him away from them, intending to kill him myself, but a lucky shot from a guard finished him off. Not so lucky for me as I missed out on the experience. I did however gain a +1 axe.

Baldr008.jpg

To fight Greywolf, I went berserk.

Baldr009.jpg

I took Samuel to the FAI, and killed Tarnesh.

Baldr010.jpg

At Beregost I returned the Colquetle amulet and am now a hero! Fancy me, a chaotic evil Berserker being thought to be a hero. People are SO gullible!

Helped Alanna's neighbour. Now level 4.

Reunited Albert and Rufie, killed Vax and Zal, helped a dryad, helped Frienne's cat and killed Ingot.

I then went to the Lighthouse area where going berserk neutralised the Sil, the sirine and the traps. The golems weren't a major problem. I reached level 6 as a result and now have **** in daggers.

The "gulp" below, was consuming a healing potion.

Baldr055.jpg

When I met Tenya, I decided that her presence would be helpful. I was right, her command spell made the battles against the ankhegs easy.

She and Gavin joined me until I completed their quests, after which they left. Now Dorn has joined me.

We hunted enough ankheg to pay for a decent crossbow and then went to the gnoll stronghold where we killed assassins and looted a cave.

After identifying the tome, my charisma is now 17.

Dorn and I then investigated the mines and upon meeting the Duerger assassins, we killed them. We set off the nearby traps before heading to the carnival to rest and identify our loot.

The mine was speedily finished off and I am now going in search of the bandits alone.

I couldn't believe how easily the bandits, retrieving Chelak's body, and killing the dragon went.

There was only one occasion that concerned me, and that is when I got held TWICE by a trap despite being enraged. A sword spider was attacking me at the time.

Baldr088.jpg
Baldr089.jpg

I killed several wyvern on the way to the Cloakwood mines. Once there I took on Drasus et al. After killing him, I was badly injured, so after picking up his loot, I fled. I rested and returned. The rest of the battle was straightforward as was the battle with Hareishan..

Baldr091.jpg
Baldr092.jpg

Natasha killed herself and when I reached Davaeorn I killed his cohorts before fleeing to rest.

Baldr093.jpg
Baldr094.jpg

Baldr096.jpg
Baldr097.jpg

Killing Davaeorn was then straightforward.

I found it impossible to wound the Mustard Jelly with my daggers, so switched to a sword.

Now in Baldur's Gate having picked up Dorn to trigger the fight with Simmeon. Having completed his quest, he left.

To defeat the Iron Throne I ensured that I had to fight two, three at the most, of them at a time.

I have now returned to Candlekeep.

Having gone through Candlekeep with ease, I picked up Alora and we are now outside Durlag's Tower. It would probably have been better to recruit her earlier, but too late now. At least I was able to give her good equipment. :)

We killed the warders with ease and as we progressed I learnt just how good a thief Alora is, far better than the others that I have used.

Missed out on loot by killing the king at the chess board before his minions, not that we needed it. I was surprised at how easy it was.

I made one big mistake in that I forgot to take on the skeletons to replenish my arrow supply. However, after killing the Demonknight, we went back for them and I am now busy getting our loot identified. The Demonknight battle was much easier than anticipated. :)

I have been doing the Dark Side quests, helping Jet'Laya, killing the Nashkel Deagon and the like. Now going to find Mayor of Nashkel's son, but first killed a few ankhegs to boost Baeloth's experience enough to go up a level.
Found him! Due to not seeing us, he didn't teleport away. Now to do some looting. The vampiresses charmed CuChoinneach and panicked me. That resulted in a prolonged battle which resulted in me ending up fighting enemies that I was not prepared for. We id eventually prevail and also got away from CuChoinneach. This enabled healing, but CuChoinneach is still charmed.

Baldr121.jpg

At last, the spell wore off and we are all in good shape. The question is, "Now that the quest is finished, should I explore the castle further, or take the safe option?"

We cleared most of the castle and returned the baby.

Now Otho wants us to find his nephew. However, we decided not to bother and instead go after the Iron Throne.

We sold all our +1 weapons to make room in our bag of holding, sold some wands and replaced them with ones with more charges. We could still do with a wand of fire with more charges though, but funds insufficient. A visit to Ice Island could solve that problem.

Selling my jewellery and +1 suits of armour, I was able to buy all the wands and potions that I wanted. Of course, more would have been nice. Down to 65gp, so let's hope that I don't need to raise my cleric.

Jet' Laya and Baeloth are on the verge of leveling up.

Killed Kirsten and Slythe. Kirsten and Slythe leveled up.

Baldr123.jpg
Baldr124.jpg

The Ducal Palace was straightforward. We picked up Drizzt and headed for the undercity.

We killed some of the enemies inside and disabled a few traps. However, I remembered a stack of gems in Baldur's Gate and decided yo pick them up, sell them, and stock up on potions prior to killing Sarevok. After doing this, we are left with the grand total of 3gp.

Sadly Baeloth hasn't memorised skull trap. That would have been a useful spell.
