I could imagine that. But of course that strategy would work with any fighter dual, as well as an F/M or an F/I. F/Ms and F/Is are indeed monsters. Fighter duals can be excellent, too- I freely acknowledge that. It's the excessive enthusiasm for kensai kit variant in particular that I take issue with.

I can't comment on IWD, since I've never played it, but in BG the tradeoffs involved are highly questionable. I'd take dispelling arrows, the Reflex and a helm over extra damage any day, and the kensage sacrifices far more than that.

Best,

A.

The advantage of the sorcerer over the F/M was the infinite Wish Simulacrum Project Image Timestop looping to defeat Bel solo at the end. (Heart of Fury mode though). The IWD differences to transformation make melee much more viable for pure casters than in BG where its pretty un-fun. Plus the faster spell progression of course.

But yes, a pure F->M is much more pleasant than the kensai version. Real pros playing Enchanter(1)->Fighter though ;)

Alia, Halfling Kensai: Bodhi's Lair

0.jpg

We're catching up with a quickness, but we still have a ways to go. Let's get this done.

Following the Windspear Hills quest, Alia was just shy of her first HLA. I decided to do a little minor questing so she'd have Hardiness for Bodhi.

We started with the Crypt King. At 15k he's a bargain, assuming you can foil that Horror spell.
1.jpg
Pai Na was next because we'll need an animal for the altar in the Underdark (I know: not really, lol).
2.jpg
Speaking of bargains: How about the Fallen Paladin quest for potion scoring? It can't be beat, especially if you don't help out against the smugglers. Note that the door to the Balthis estate is open. Alia buffed in there.
3.jpg
Since we'll have the MoD soon, we of course did the illithium quest. Here we see Alia revealing Neb with Dragonslayer. Bad Mr Efreeti! Now is not the time to vanish. We need to punk that fool stat!
4.jpg
We took down the pirates too because by now they're easy XP. Alia is over leveled now, which makes things easier, but also harder. Regardless of level, solo characters have a narrow margin of safety in no reload play and over-leveling breeds over confidence. Over-confidence, in turn, is deadly. It's extremely common for solo character to die in late SoA. Every encounter must be handled with care.
5.jpg
These spiders, for example, could easily kill a careless human or half elf, via their web effect targeting save v breath. They're no match for a halfling though.
6.jpg
Facing vamps without NPP is always nerve racking. Level drain imposes a huge save penalty, so a melee strike and a Domination cast is all it takes to end a run. It's nice to have Azureedge.
7.jpg
It's clay golem time. Enter Ras and Mr Efreeti. Way to go team!
8.jpg
Time to fade and punk that vamp. Stay away, ya' freakazoids!
9.jpg
Thanks for catching that backstab, Mr Efreeti. That makes up for the Invisibility cast against Neb, for sure
10.jpg
We'll take it from here.
11.jpg
Scorage! She you later, vampy-poos: We're off to Cromwell's.
12.jpg
We have NPP now, so bring it on, mofos.
13.jpg

14.jpg
Tanova is always the trickiest. We drew her out with Ras.
15.jpg
And then punked her demon with the Boomerang Dagger. We're looking good.
16.jpg
A triple Skull Trap sequencer is a solid play, but Alia wears the BoIB so it didn't work out for Tanova. Further, Alia has the Sword of Arvoreen, so Skull Trap sequencer + PW:S via glabrezu wouldn't get the job done, even if Alia hadn't seperated and nixed the demon, while also evading the bulk of the Skull Trap damage. It's a nice idea though, a dangerous idea. Alia's just too slick for it.
17.jpg
Now we've got one for you, Tanova. Mr Efreeti draws your attention, and then an invisible Alia sneaks behind you with the IMod. What do you have for that? Thought so.
18.jpg
And how about you, Lassal? Do you have an answer to Mr. Efreeti + iMod? Thought so again.
19.jpg
How about you, Bodhi? We know you can handle Mr. Efreeti, as well as the iMoD, but what do you have for a potion of absorption + RoAC II + Ilbratha II?
20.jpg
Yup. Nothing but a last ditch Touch of Death so you can deal a little damage before you slink off.
21.jpg
Hope you enjoyed the spanking, Bodhicous! Until next time!
22.jpg

Best,

A.

We seem to agree, though, that there are many options preferable to a kensai->mage in BG, including some of the other fighter duals, which was my original point.

Alia, Halfling Kensai: Spellhold

0.jpg

With the exception of a single buggy-ish battle, Alia's trip through Spellhold was exceptionally smooth.

The vamps were thwacked with the iMod.
1.jpg
From there on out, the Pixie Prick was the star of the show. It was like nap time at Brynnlaw Nursery School.
2.jpg
3.jpg
Galvena's mage, Vadek, put up a bit of a fight, launching a triple Flame Arrow sequencer, which could have been foiled with The Reflex, had Alia not been a kensai.
4.jpg
In the end, though, the Sandman took him too. Enter Sandman would be a suitable theme for this phase of Alia's adventure- especially The Warning's cover with Alessia Cara.
5.jpg
By now Alia could safely allows mages a fair fight.
6.jpg
Although how fair is it if you use The Victor? EE really should tone these two down. Perth couldn't get a spell off since The Victor just cut through his defenses every time he opened his mouth. Let's put the L4 back on that effect, m'kay?
8.jpg
9.jpg
Alia had to be extra, extra careful with the clay golem defending the bag of holding. A cursed wound now, at the beginning of a lock in quest, would be a major problem. Happily Ras and Mr. Efreeti were up to the task, as per usual.
10.jpg
The tome monsters mostly fell to the Pixie Prick, including the beholder. The only exception was the ilithid, which succumbed to the Boomerang Dagger.
11.jpg
Pro undead + Azuredge took care of the lich.
12.jpg
The iMod ended Dace.
13.jpg
This leads us to the quests trickiest fight. After knocking off the minotaurs I debated wither it was worth it to mess with the Mithril Token Machine. Normally it would be, but currently there is a bit of a bug, in which the ulitharid and the noble efreeti teleport out of their cages. Fighting those two, and a yuan-ti mage, is a bit of a nuisance.
14.jpg
Ultimately I decided it was worth it, since undispellable elemental protection is hard to come by as a kensai. we could use the Boots of the North, especially in Watcher's Keep. The fight was just as annoying as expected. Hopefully jmerry will fix this for us. And speaking of Spellhold fixes, can we get Bhaal to follow us into Candlekeep, while we're at it?
15.jpg
I didn't take many screenshots of this battle because I was just annoyed. It cost a bunch of healing potions and Alia never should have had to fight it. Suffice to say that Alia won, although she was also punished with damage spells.

Thanks to the iMoD Bodhi's kin were nixed before the slayer transformation.
18.jpg
Once upon a time this slayer transformation sequence was sketchy for solo no reloaders but that doesn't appear to be the case anymore.
19.jpg
The Irenicus fight ended super quick. While Alia was nixing her clone under WW, the inmates debuffed Jon-Jon.
21.jpg
I didn't bother to check the battle record to see how. Instead Alia just hammered him with the Boomerang Dagger.
22.jpg
And that as they say is that. We're off to Fishville.
23.jpg

Best,

A.

PS: I still have some Sweet Tooth left to watch and tomorrow is a travel day so they'll be another pause in updates. I expect that we'll finish up SoA on Monday. Good hunting, everyone!

Alia, Halfling Kensai: The Sahuagin City

Ok! I'm eating dinner now, and I've decided to knock off Fishville super quick. Might as well make progress while I can.

I've long called the Sahuagin City Fishville, but now that I think about it, it should be called Lootville. It's loaded with goodies. Mirroring is a pass for my characters, but the CoP + 2 is a must have, of course, and the Wave is worth it for Imix alone. Say what you will about the Sahuagin, but they have great taste in artifacts.

I always feel bad for the Fishville ettin. At least this time he got to die in his sleep.
1.jpg
There are many downsides to being a kensai. One of the upsides is that you get to sell all that magical ammo you've been hording in Fishville. Alia is loaded now.
2.jpg
I never install the SCS component that moves the Cloak of Mirroring to ToB, since I don't use Mirroring anyways. It does, however, make sense if you are going to use it. This is way too early to get something so powerful.
3.jpg
Since the bone golem is presumably immune to sleep, Alia took him down with the Boomerang Dagger. He's super-slow, making this super-simple.
4.jpg
Once upon a time I knew the dialogue option for avoiding conflict with the Spectator. I don't think Alia was smart enough or wise enough to pull that off anyways. Regardless, he fell quickly, even withou a strength buff. Alia misses Draw on Holy Might.
5.jpg
We took the max loot path in Fishville, going with the Prince's plan and then turning on him. King Looney-Tunes was nixed with the Boomerang Dagger, since he had activated an HLA. No sense in standing around for that. Alia Smote him, while running a low end strength potion.
6.jpg
The prince must have known something was up, because he wandered off shortly after taking power. The downside of this move was that he was all by his lonesome when Alia caught up to him. Not that it would have mattered.
7.jpg
And down to the Underdark we go. Has anyone else wondered why the svirfneblin have royal rooms? Who is staying there, and how do they maintain that level of lux?
8.jpg

That's done. Yay! Time to get back to dinner. My menudo vegano is getting cold.

Best,

A.

Alia, Halfling Kensai: The Underdark

0.jpg

Of all the areas in Baldur's Gate, the Underdark is the only one that fails, and it fails because it succeeds so well. The designers did a wonderful job of creating a dark, foreboding, oppressive world that you, the player, will want to escape. But that's just it: if you want to escape, how can you enjoy a lengthy quest like the dragon egg story line? It's hard to embrace a world that you want to get out of.

Nonetheless, in Alia's game I stuck it out through the entire dragon egg quest, and completed most of the side quests too. This went well, on balance, although Alia did suffer her closest call of her adventure.

Alia doesn't like demons. She needs buffs to thrive, and demons cast Remove at will. It's a problem. Fortunately, she has the tools to deal with an isolated demon, like the svirfneblin's balor.

Here we see Alia firing up Smite just as the balor emerges. No sense in giving him a chance.
1.jpg
Alia probably shouldn't be able to use these Cloak of the Stars darts, but someone forgot to block heri kit so she can and does. They're the right choice here because she doesn't have her +3 throwing dagger yet and they'll get through Stoneskins faster, and apply on hit effect more often, than Azuredge.
2.jpg
Now that the Stoneskins have been peeled, it's almost time to switch to Azuredge. We just need to tag this bloke with a lengthier stun first. Sorry, Mr. Balor, we're not even going to let you twitch.
3.jpg
Time for a whirlwind. And that is how we do that.
4.jpg
Kuo-toans always give me grief. I think it's because I refuse to accept that they're actually semi-formidable foes. I try to treat them like throwaway enemies, but that doesn't exactly work because they have too many problematic abilities, most notably True Sight at will and speed. Respect them and they fall as they should. Underestimate them and they'll get your goats, along with some of your healing potions.
5.jpg
The drow had no answer at all to Alia's throwing daggers. They went quietly, oh so quietly.
8.jpg
The rescue mission was going well until one of the mind flayers dropped a psionic maze on Phaere.
10.jpg
There was a tense moment as I wondered whether the maze effect would break Phaere's script. Happily she came back as her charming self. The quest continues.
11.jpg
I usually try to avoid killing the good aligned drow hunting party that stalks the PC out of the Underdark, but they were costing Alia too many invisibility charges. They had to go. This was a broken fight, mostly won with Firetooth, although the Pixie Prick made an appearance.
12.jpg
Speaking of Firetooth, we bought it, obviously- along with very nearly every potion in the city. Potions are life for Alia. She'll buy every useful potion in Amn before leaving for ToB.

As soon as we got some free time we started chipping away at the kuo-toan resistance. Batch by batch we worked through them all, including the prince. We also took down the majority of the exit defenders, leaving but two for Adalon. That final fight can get messy if you haven't cleared the kuo-toans first, even with Adalon's assistance.
13.jpg
While the kuo-toans annoyed me to tears, they never really threatened Alia. The demon knights enjoyed that distinction. So: What went wrong here? I was misled by prior experience, that's what. As some of you know, I recently ran a character very similar to our current Alia. When she fought the demon knights they went quietly. All my other characters had killed them with ease, too. What I didn't know, exactly, was why all those characters had killed the demon knights so quickly. It was RoAC II. The demon knights have a clever strategy. They cast PW:B, forcing you into melee. Then they level drain you with their melee attacks, imposing a huge save penalty, paving the way for their symbol spells. It's a dangerous idea that needs to be foiled at one phase or another, preferably at the start. That's what RoAC II does: it prevents targeting of PW:B and thus allows you to take them down at range. If you let them target you, though -and aren't aware of the level drain effect- you can quickly find yourself in hot water. That's what happened to Alia. She had used her RoAC II on the kuo-toans earlier, and so nearly fell into the trap. She never had to roll to save, thankfully, but she did have to think on her feet.

Here we see Alia, blinded, engaged in melee, taking down one of the demon knights. Note that she's been level drained. She's in trouble now. Her aura is clouded from activating GWW and her saves are in the danger zone.
14.jpg
The only thing to do here is run- grab the Spear of the Unicorn and run before the symbols start flying. That's what Alia did. She used a Restoration scroll as soon as she could, and then made her way to the svirfneblin village, all the while holding her Spear of the Unicorn to bring her save v death down to -4.

Alia checked in, took a nap, and then headed back to the tunnels to finish the job. But guess who showed up. Umm, hi guys? Wasn't expecting to see you here.
16.jpg
Fortunately Alia was able to get RoAC II off in time, thwarting PW:B and getting her save v death down to -5. From there it was just a simple matter of tossing daggers at them. They're dangerous, but they're glass canons, vulnerable to ranged attacks in particular.
17.jpg
With the kuo-toans cleared and Soul Reaver in hand, picking up the Greenstone Amulet for Tamah was next on the to do list. Once that was done Alia was free to finish up the dragon egg quest. I usually abandon this quest before the end, but I kind of wanted the Matron Mother's ring this time.
19.jpg
It was courteous of Alia to leave those two drow for Adalon. She felt like she helped. Thanks, Addy! Until next time!
20.jpg
Your days are numbered, Bodhi. Alia is coming for you.

Best,

A.

Alia, Halfling Kensai: Athkatla Clean-Up

0.jpg

Alia's Athkatala clean-up went smoothly, although it did come at a cost. Who's to say whether that cost will come back to haunt Alia.

Let's talk about the easy part first: The Guarded Compound. This was a straight up trouncing.

While Alia failed in her attempt to evade the dispel trap, that hindered her little. She still took out Sion in a fraction of a round, as planned.
1.jpg
Next it was a kensai showdown: dagger kensai vs katana kensai. Care to guess who wins? I'll give you a clue. Katanas have a range of one foot. Daggers have a range of one hundred feet. Right.
2.jpg
So who's next? Ketta was priority one, but she was invisible. Stalman's Physical Mirror made him off limits for now, and so Maferan and Olaf moved to the top of the hitlist. Sorry, Olaf. If you're going to be a melee fighter you need to be fast like a freak. A sluggish melee fighter is a sitting duck. Level 1 Alia could have beaten you. You're just an ogrillion with more hit-points and a better AC.
3.jpg
Now where is that Maferan...Ah! A surprise guest. Ketta! Pixie Prick time!
4.jpg
Thank to the Pixie Prick, the extended cat and mouse game with Ketta was cut short. Instead she just went to sleep. As for Maferan, he died somewhere, sometime, but I don't have a screenshot of that one. Close your eyes and picture it. Throwing dagger jacks minotaur. Ok, done. On to Stalman. He's still running Physical Mirror so let's fire up Hardiness.
5.jpg
And there we go. The Guarded Compound has been secured.
6.jpg
Let's do those liches. Alia went with pro undead + Azuredge against the shade and elemental liches, since she knew she'd get a worthy fight out of Kangaxx. No regrets here.
7.jpg
Let's just jump forward to the demi-lich. Kangaxx opened with a fallen planetar. Firetooth Whirlwind. What else, ya got?
8.jpg
Time Stop -> Comet. Nice idea, but Comets can be juked.
9.jpg
Try something else.
10.jpg
Mages are best fought at range. It widens the counter window, and it confers effective immunity to two of the most dangerous spells in the arcane toolkit: Maze and Imprisonment. But with only eighteen +5 darts at her disposal, Alia was eventually forced to go toe to toe with Kangaxx. No problem. SCS doesn't cast Maze or Imprisonment on solo characters, right?
11.jpg
Wrong. That used to be the default, but now it's an option you need to activate, apparently. This is going to cost us. A paladin or a UAI rogue with a clear aura can counter Maze by equipping Carsomyr and quaffing a potion of magic protection. But what of a kensai? Magic Resistance + potion of magic protection would work, but that's two rounds and we don't have that kind of time. A protection from magic scroll is our only option.
12.jpg
In my instal Spellstrike can take down protection from magic. Kangaxx predictably dropped Alia's pro magic immediately. What now? We tried Magic Resistance via HLA, but Kangaxx Triggered it down. We were forced back into melee with our last pro magic scroll now at risk. Did he take it? Yes he did. He cast another Maze, consuming our last pro magic scroll. I don't allow offensive use of pro magic in my games but still: that could come back to haunt us. We no longer have a reliable one round counter to Maze. We'll need to keep an eye on that. The Ring of Gaxx, however, is ours. Who's to say if it was worth it.
13.jpg
With the clean up complete, it's time to gather our allies and face off with Bodhi. Here's Alia's hype song heading into the final confrontations with Bodhi and Irenicus. Wish her luck!

Best,

A.

Sadie, Half-Elf Blade: To Nashkel

After fighting some wild animals and diseased gibberlings, the party arrived at the Friendly Arm Inn. But before they could enter the building, a mysterious figure intercepted them. Some hostile words were exchanged, and he began to cast a spell! Imoen might not be much of a scholar of the arcane, but she knows a few things. Using her Wand of Magic Missiles, she interrupted the mysterious spellcaster. Xzar used Larloch's minor drain, Montaron made a melee attack, and Sadie threw darts. The mysterious figure didn't stand a chance.

sadie_04.jpg

Sadie found a note on the aggressor's lifeless body. It looks like someone has placed a bounty on her head!

A few moments later, the party found Jaheira and Khalid. After the introductions and condolences, the party decided that they would spend the night at the Inn, and travel to Nashkel the following day. Yet, Sadie couldn't sleep. She replayed the events leading to Gorion's death over and over in her mind. Annoyed, she decided to walk around the Inn and talk to some of the guests. One of them had lost a Flamedance ring, another one had a spider infestation in their home in Beregost, and so forth. Sadie said that she might help these people, when (and if) she could spare the time, and if the price was right. She then went back to her room.

The next day, after solving some of the menial tasks that Sadie had agreed to, the party made their way south. They would first travel to Beregost, and from there to Nashkel.

Sadie, Half-Elf Blade: Arrival at the Nashkel

It would be pointless to narrate every insignificant encounter that the party had with bandits or the local fauna, but one such episode deserves mention. After finding and slaying the ogre that had stolen a belt, the party found a most curious girdle in his possession. They would later identify it at Beregost, and it would turn out to be a Girdle of Masculinity/Femininity. None of the party members had any use for it, but Sadie decided to keep it nonetheless. Perhaps she will meet someone that might need it. It is a cursed item, to be sure. Nonetheless, some individuals might see it as a blessed item instead.

sadie_05.jpg

When the party reached Beregost, they decided to purchase a few things at the local blacksmith, but they didn't rest anywhere. Instead, they kept traveling south. They could always return to Beregost later. For now, it was imperative to reach Nashkel.

The mayor of Nashkel informed them that the mines were closed off until further notice. Workers have been disappearing lately, and there is talk of demons inhabiting the lower levels. Under different circumstances he would send the town guard, but he currently can't afford to do so because of the increasing frequency of bandit raids. He therefore tasked the party to investigate the mines.

Before venturing forth, the party decided to get a good night's sleep at the local inn. However, another would-be assassin attacked Sadie on sight. Once again, Imoen used her Wand of Magic Missiles and Sadie threw darts, but then she switched to her sword. Montaron, Xzar, Jaheira and Khalid attacked as well. During the battle, the assailant managed to cast Hold Person. Sadie and Xzar were thus helpless. Montaron shook off the effects, and he landed the killing blow.

Sadie, Half-Elf Blade: To the Mines

That night at the inn, Sadie had a terrible nightmare. When she woke up, she felt somehow different. More... "magical", if you will. She discovered that she could cast a healing spell.

Before breakfast, Jaheira and Khalid had a talk with Sadie and Imoen. They suggested that Xzar and Montaron should leave the group. There wasn't strong rationale for this request. Xzar and Montaron just seemed... untrustworthy. To be sure, the human and the halfling protested, but Sadie told them that she held up her end of the bargain. She agreed to travel with them to Nashkel, but no further than that. So, the group split up.

Surely there were many things to do at Nashkel before going to the mines, but the party decided to take care of such things afterwards. The iron crisis worsens with each passing day. Sadie had already lost a long sword because of it. It was imperative to reach the mines, find out the cause of the crisis, and put and end to it.

But once again, the party was intercepted. This time, by a group of bandits. A fight ensued. However, neither side initiated it. Instead, it was started by a Half-Orc in black armor. Sadie's party decided to help him. After all, he was fighting the bandits that tried to rob the party. Jaheira assisted him by casting Cure Light Wounds on him a few times. Eventually, all of the bandits lay dead. Sadie agreed to let the Half-Orc join the party, much to the dismay of Imoen, Jaheira and Khalid.

Nevertheless, the party finally reached their destination: the Nashkel Mines.

Alia, Halfling Kensai: Bodhi

0.jpg

0a.jpg
Well, I've settled into my new digs, with sunset views of the Pacific, in Costa Rica. I'll miss The Love Boat vibes of the cruise ship town I had been living in for the last six months, but this will do nicely until I'm ready for a change.

Anyhoo, let's talk about Alia, and her final showdown with Bodhi.

This was hard. This was scary. That's good. The final showdown with Bodhi should be. Kudos to David for finally getting the balancing right on his vampires, and the final Bodhi battle. They're both well tuned now, especially on Insane.

The early phases of Alia's raid on Bodhi's Lair went well, as expected. Fledgling vamps, ancient vamps and elder vamps all have one fatal flaw in common: they don't cast remove, and that means they have little chance against Alia. All she needed was a potion of defense.
1.jpg
Alia recruited all available allies. On a few occasions I've accidentally triggered Drizzt's fight with the vampires before properly arriving on the scene, leading to the vaguely depressing annihilation of the Forgotten Realm's most storied drow. It always puts a smile on my face when that doesn't happen, and I get to fight alongside Drizzt. This time Drizzt's entire party survived. I was pleased. Alia doesn't have pips in axes or maces, but she doesn't need them, thanks to her kensai bonuses.
2.jpg

3.jpg
Moving on now. Note that the vamps made a little progress on Alia, albeit not enough to pose a threat.
4.jpg
After drinking a healing potion, and regenerating the rest of her health back, Alia engaged Tanova, flanked by Drizzt and Sir Eric. The shadow thieves had joined by now, but they did not fare well. Here we see Alia on demon punking duty while Arkanis get himself killed, whiffing away at ProMW.
6.jpg
Just stay on your feet, guys. Once ProMW expires Azuredge will handle this.
7.jpg
Onto Bodhi. Alia's encounter with Bodhi was harrowing, and by all rights Alia should have died. The current iteration of Improved Bodhi has a dangerous ability that I hadn't been unaware of. Her fire shield like ability, Deathly Shroud, reduces saves by one on contact. Fortunately for my characters going forward, I now know of the risk, and know to prepare for it. In Alia's case, I believe I tossed in a potion of clarity for good measure, even though I didn't expect to need it. Now I know non save based disabler defenses are essential in this fight.

Even before the Deathly Shroud debacle, the Bodhi encounter had gotten unexpectedly tight. In past fights I've deployed the elven holy water, pulled back, and then engaged Bodhi in the hallway, allowing my allies to take on the casters in the main hall. That was what I had been hoping to do with Alia. Unfortunately it didn't happen. Instead, Alia pulled one of the support casters, who in turn summoned a demon. Alia lost her buffs and suddenly found herself vulnerable.
9.jpg
Not liking the scene in the hallway, Alia retreated to the main hall, hoping to find better odds alongside Eric and Drizzt. Instead she found her allies cornered, in a hopeless situation. Since Alia had been con drained at this point, I was reluctant to let her engage in melee. She helped out with Azuredge for as long as she could, but eventually she was forced back in the hallway. In retrospect I believe I could have played this part of the fight better but, honestly, I was panicking. Bodhi's crew had the upper hand and I was well aware of it. Alia had been dispelled and con drained. Her allies were pinned and on the brink. Bodhi's crew, meanwhile, was largely intact. Not good.
10.jpg
By the time Alia retreated to the hallway, my thoughts were on exiting, but even that looked challenging. See that Power Word: Stun animation on Alia? And did you notice her hit points: she's at 89. What saved her, you ask? The Sword of Arvoreen, which I had placed in her offhand once she got close to 90hp. Most players prefer dwarves for their warriors, due to the con and strength bonuses. I prefer halflings, partly because I prefer dex, but primarily because of Arvoreen. Instant non-aura dependent protection from Stun and Slow is a big deal.
11.jpg
Soon the caster's ProMWs were spent, allowing Alia to turn the tables. Alia was still con drained though so she had to be careful. We were fortunate that the casters chose to engage without Bodhi by their side. Alia would have struggled against Bodhi without her buffs.
12.jpg
13.jpg
After the second caster fell, Alia turtled in a corner before facing Bodhi. She needs to heal and she needed to buff.
14.jpg
This is it: the final showdown. We're running potion of mind focusing + potion of invulnerability + potion of absorption + potion of cold resistance + protection from cold + potion of power + potion of clarity, along with our illusionary buffs. Had I known about the saving throw drain effect on Deathly Shroud the brew would have looked a bit different here.

And there we have it: victory from the jaws of defeat. I consider Alia lucky here, though. My execution was poor in this fight, and there was a critical gap in my knowledge. This could have -and probably should have- played out differently. Nonetheless, we move on to Irenicus.

Glad to see Sadie making progress, m7600!
Thanks Alesia, but I'm gonna call it quits... Sadie just died in the Nashkel mines, and, as my latest posts show, I was too lazy to keep writing dialogues between the characters anyways :ROFLMAO:
No / Low Reload Adventures is a very tough format for me, even on Normal difficulty and without mods. I've never been a very good player when it comes to Real Time with Pause. I think I fare a bit better in turn-based RPGs, but I'm not a great player in those either, by any means. Maybe I'll get better with time and more practice :)

Understood. And I respect your decision, of course. I do hope we'll continue to see you around in the thread. :)

Cheers,

A.

Btw, in future play throughs you may want to consider activating Autopause: Round End. That may approximate the pacing that you're used to. I actually play with most, if not all, of the auto pauses active. Here are my settings, as an fyi

Alia, Halfling Kensai: Suldanessellar

0.jpg

Looking back on Alia's fight with Bodhi, and her raid on Suldanessellar, I see that she was in danger- critical danger. I was rushing. I was over-confident. Alia is fortunate that she survived my folly. And my future characters will benefit from the reminder: late SoA sloppiness is one of the greatest threats to no reload runs. Hopefully I won't forget again.

I usually fight all the creatures in Suldanessellar and do my best to rescue Demin. Alia did not. There were two reasons for this: 1) I was rushing; 2) the rhakshasas can cast Maze and we're out of Maze counters. Even if I hadn't been rushing I likely would have made the same call. We need to be wary of Maze from this point forth.

Alia started out by securing the House of the Horn. As per usual, Ras ran distraction as we took down the clay golem. Ras rocks.
1.jpg
The rhakshasas were evaded under invisibility, with Ring of Gaxx IH reducing the odds of getting divined while in sight range.
2.jpg
Ramilaat's demon, who detects the invisible, was drawn out and punked with Firetooth.
3.jpg
We didn't need to kill Ramilaat, but he was all by his lonesome and we couldn't resist. Alia just smote him, and there goes the entirety of the drow contingent in Suldanesselar. A bit of a plot gap here, don't you think? So much was made of the drow's assault on Suldanesselar, and when you get there there is only one. And where did the rhaskshasas and golems come from anyways? Is there a modder out there who'd like to try repopulating Suldanesselar with drow? If so I support the effort.
4.jpg
It all looks good so far, right? Some of you may be wondering where the rustiness and over-confidence kicked in. Well, I'll show you. Right here.
6.jpg
About 10 seconds into the fight with Niz I allowed Alia to be dispelled, and trapped in the stairway. I have never allowed that in the past, and I don't expect that I'll ever allow that in the future. I'm glad Alia had the muscle to push through, wielding Ages with the Defender in the offhand. Some of you may have been wondering what Alia has been doing with her proficiency points since reaching grandmaster in daggers. She put one in shortswords for Kundane and Arvoreen, but the rest have gone to flails. She's a grandmaster by now.
8.jpg
Onward to Irenics. The Tree of Life is a rough venue for a mage. Mages thrive in enclosed areas, and the Tree of Life is anything but. You kind of have to go out of your way to give Irenicus a chance in this fight. Alia was not so generous.
10.jpg
This was a simple matter of punking summons and waiting our abjuration stuff.
11.jpg
12.jpg
Once the summons and combat protections were spent, Firetooth did the rest.
13.jpg
Alia is one step away from ToB.

Alia, Halfling Kensai: Irenicus in Hell

0.jpg

What words come to mind when you think of a battle to the death in Hell? How about courteous? Orderly? Polite?

Yeah. Those aren't the first three that pop into my noggin either, but they were apt descriptors of Alia's final confrontation with Irenicus. Jon-Jon and his demons were so damn thoughtful that they deserve recognition.

Seriously. They couldn't have done better. Like dropping the planetar when no one else is around, to facilitate easy punking.
2.jpg
Or attacking one by one, like in those asinine action movie sequences. One.
3.jpg
Two
4.jpg
5.jpg
Three
6.jpg
And four.
7.jpg
It was as though Jon-Jon and his demons had a huddle before the fight and were all. "Ok. What's the plan?" And then they looked at each other and were like. "Idk, give up?" And then they all agreed. "Definitely: Let's give up. We don't have a chance, so why struggle? Let's just march off to our deaths with dignity." And who should be the last float in the suicide parade? Jon-Jon of course.
8.jpg
Alia started him off with Firetooth. When he closed she switched to Ages. That was all it took. We might have hoped for a more dramatic battle, but Alia is thrilled nonetheless. She's off to ToB.
9.jpg
As some of you may have noticed, Alia took a couple of the evil options in the hell trials, specifically Wrath and Selfishness. And so here is neutral evil Alia's new hype song heading into ToB. It's a perfect fit.

Best,

A.

Alia, Halfling Kensai: Illasera

0.jpg

Throughout SoA, Alia's greatest weakness had been her inability to wear bracers or armor, and her associated dependance on dispellable AC buffs. As she transitions to ToB, other kit restrictions will take center stage. Specifically, her inability to use the Reflex and the dearth of undispellable elemental resistance options available to her.

In the Illasera fight the lack of the Reflex mattered, and it mattered a lot. It could have mattered less, but this fight was tricky for me, since it required me to go against my every instinct as a player. My approach has always been fast on defense, slow on attack, a la Gurney Halleck. I focus on defense and on the offensive end I pick my spot carefully. Absent the Reflex, Illasera demands a different approach. You need to rush her and drop her quick. Dithering can lead to death.

Before activating the statues Alia did what she could to protect herself from Illasera's arrows. She buffed her effective AC down to -19, and took an additional -19 missile adjustment via Claw of the Kazgaroth, Girdle of Piercing, Boots of Avoidance, Shield Amulet and Cloak of the Shield. Sounds good, right? Did it help? We'll see.
1.jpg
Alia opened the battle by breaking south, leaving Ras behind, hoping it would attract the attention of a few of the reavers. That worked moderately well, but Ras has one serious weakness: duration. It only hangs around for 4 rounds.
2.jpg
Illasera, who had vanished as soon as the fight began, made her appearance shortly there after. Guess what happened? She crit with her first arrow, dispelling all of Alia's carefully chosen buffs. Fooey on her.
3.jpg
As you can see, Illasera was flanked by two black reavers at this point. I was hoping to leave at least one, preferably both, behind, but that just gave Illasera a chance to land more arrows while I futzed about. This wasn't a time for subtley. It was a time to charge, and charge Alia did. As you can see, Alia took a bit of a beating here, even with Hardiness and the Defender going for her. She ended Illasera nonetheless and that's what counts. The Five are now the Four. Gromnir is next.

Best,

A.
