Aurora, Elven Beast Master: Umar Hills

For those of you puzzling over the goodberries, they're for Hanna. She enjoys them. It's about time someone made use of those things. I approve.

Assisting Jermien is a lot less fun when you can't use Ilbratha. Aurora has no use for metal, but she'd love some Mirror Images. Mr. Efreeti did the honors with the killer mimic.
1.jpg
Aurora handled the stone golem, nixing him just before he landed a first blow on Jermien. Ilbratha was sold. I cried.
2.jpg
Aurora handled the Temple of Amuana with ease, aided ever so slightly by a quirk. Somehow, someway the bone golem never made an appearance. He showed up in the battle record, but Aurora never met him in combat. When you exit an area SCS sometime teleport creatures to your new location. I've seen this in the temple specifically. Aurora went back to the light gem platform to rest once. Perhaps the bone golem was teleported there, but showed up late, after Aurora had returned to the temple? I have no idea. It was weird. Whatever. That's enough about that.

Anyhoo, Aurora took a slightly different approach in the opening temple battle. After noticing that the shade wolves lacked the THACO to hit, even with a +4 bonus, Aurora equipped her sling and shot over the wolves to the skeleton warriors.
3.jpg
This worked until a greater shade wolf slipped in, forcing a retreat. One skeleton warrior had been killed by then, though, and the other was near death. With Mr. Efreeti providing covering on our tactical retreat, Aurora had little work left when she re-engaged.
4.jpg
The Shadow Jailor fell to the Staff Mace. At 2d4 + 2, the Staff Mace is a respectable weapon in early SoA. It's a capable placeholder for Gnasher until we get that second pip in clubs.
5.jpg
Aurora's animals were of little use in the temple. They couldn't make their save v death against the shadow fiends, and they couldn't stand up to the skeleton warriors. Aurora had to go it alone. Not to worry. The friendly neighborhood lava pit lent a helping hand.
6.jpg
That was a glorious moment, so here are a couple more camera angles. First, from Aurora's point of view.
giphy.gif
And now from the skeleton warrior's.
giphy-1.gif
Hooray! That was the highlight of the quest. I'm calling it the highlight because I decided to go Pro Undead against the Shade Lord again. It's a hard habit to break. Instant gratification and all. Script suggestion for David: Have the Shade Lord cast Remove Magic on the Shadow Altar. It should cover most of, if not all of, the area.
8.jpg
It's been a long, long time since I've done the ranger stronghold quests. I enjoy these. The ranger stronghold is one of my favorites. We went with a full complement of summons for the ogron encounter. Aurora provided range support with Tuigan. Aurora is solid in melee now, with her Bracers of AC 3, shield, armor adjustments and weapon specific belts. Ranged fighting is her happy place, though. She's looking forward to getting more pips in range weapons, and adding crossbows to the repertoire.
10.jpg

The de'Arnise Keep is next.

Cheers,

A.

Aurora, Elven Beastmaster: The de'Arnise Keep
0.jpg

Following the Umar Hills quest I dithered about, indecisive. Dangers abound for a level 11 elf with a save v spell of 5. We've already done the easy stuff.

I thought about each quest, and thought about why those quests were risky. In the Mae'Var questline it's Symbol Stun. In the Planar Prison it's Symbol Stun again, and in a more harrowing context. In the Unseeing Eye it's Anti-Magic Ray. In the Planar Sphere it's a lot of things. In the de'Arnise Keep, it's Remove from the yuan-ti mages followed by fireballs, in conjunction with a troll army. They're all dangerous. But wait, back up: Remove followed by fireballs in conjunction with a troll army. Remove depends on level. The yuan ti mage levels depend on the PC's level. Aurora is level 11. Trolls are vulnerable to fireballs. Suddenly we had a plan and a way forward.

For this mission we'd need both Potions of Invulnerability and Potions of Invisibility. We did Fallen Paladins because it's a great source of both.
1.jpg

Ok. let's kill some trolls. Bam!
2.jpg

Aurora is an excellent troll fighter. Don't let the studded leather fool you. With her Bracers of AC 3, Shield of Harmony, and now the Helm of the Noble, her base AC is -8, -10 under Draw on Holy Might. Subtract from that Aura's studded leather -2 piercing adjustment, along with her -3 Girdle of Piercing adjustment, and we're at -15. And, of course, we still haven't even figure in RoAC II yet, so make that -19. You can keep your full plate. Aurora is fine with her leather, thank you very much.

So, allow me to tell you the tale of the de'Arnise courtyard. Aurora opened by summoning her bears. She could use a paw against that otyugh, and she wasn't afraid to admit it. The bears fought bravely, and did their duty. She was proud of them, and looked forward to reuniting with them after opening the gate.
3.jpg
Alas, when the gate opened, the de'Arnise Guard dropped the ball, letting a pair of giant trolls in. And what did those trolls do? They ruthlessly murdered Aurora's bears.
4.jpg
Aurora was all:
giphy.gif
And she came down the stairs like
giphy-1.gif
Giant trolls, meet -19 v piercing and a pissed off elf. Say hello to her efreeti friend, too.
7.jpg
Moving on to the next level, the spirit trolls were Aurora's greatest concern. Greater Command is a significant threat, and 90% resistance to sleep is approximately equal to 0% resistance to sleep, since neither can be trusted. RoAC II gets our save v spells to 1, but it doesn't last long. Potions of Invulnerability can do the job, but they are expensive, and better used elsewhere. It would be best to avoid the spirit trolls altogether. That's exactly what Aurora did, taking the southern route to the Keep Key.

After dispatching the protector trolls, who had jumped the gun, racing to meet Aurora as soon as she opened the door, Aurora settled into a fight with the yuan ti mage. She sent in her war dogs first, seeking to draw out that ever dangerous Teleport Field.
8.jpg
A Chaos was foiled by the Shield of Harmony.
9.jpg
Eventually that Teleport Field cast came. Aurora slipped into the hallway. She could safely call her summons now. The yuan ti mage went with Spook. Call of the Wild pitches in again.
13.jpg
After carefully peeling skins and foiling spells with Acid Arrows, Aurora switched to melee. And check out the weapon she's using: Our second pip in clubs has arrived. Gnasher is now our main.
14.jpg
Gnasher is a strange weapon, with a piercing damage over time effect. It does not play nicely with the troll finishing mechanic, as I now know. The results were erratic. Sometimes Gnasher would send a troll down, only to have him stand back up at near death as soon as the piercing effects started ticking. At other times it would kill trolls outright where they stood, with immunity messages appearing just prior to damage and death. Trolls have always been janky. They're extra janky with Gnasher.
15.jpg

I considered this before the Torgal battle, but ultimately decided that Gnasher was Aurora's best weapon in any case. I'm not sure that was the right call. Facing lowish level yuan ti, I felt comfortable pre-buffing with some high value potions. This would be a gamble. If we lose our potions we'll have to roll and come back later. Potion of Fire Resistance, Potion of Invulnerability, Shield Amulet, Potion of Fire Giant Strength, Potion of Regeneration, Oil of Speed, Draw on Holy Might, RoACII and, finally, an 11th hour addition: a Potion of Power. It's go time. Bring it on, Torgal.

Aurora engaged at the doorway, with Mr. Efreeti at her back. She landed a trio of solid blows and followed with a Potion of Firebreath. Mr Efreeti added a Flame Arrow. We're looking good.
16.jpg
Aurora continues to exchange blows with Torgal, and expends another Potion of Firebreath. And now for the fateful moment: the Remove cast. It fails. Aurora is only running 50% fire resistance so the yuan ti launch their fireballs anyways, devastating Torgals army, and bringing Torgie himself to near death.
17.jpg
Aurora has take some damage by now and could use a breather. We just need to sneak in the finish on Torgal. She lands another Potion of Firebreath and runs. Torgal is unconscious. A second tic of that firebreath potion should kill him.
18.jpg
That's when things got janky. Torgal stood up, killed Mr. Efreeti and fell back down again, still refusing to die. Gnasher is screwing us.
19.jpg
Aurora was eager to finish Torgal, but she urgently needed to heal. She used a superior healer, proffered from Watcher's Keep. Torgal is still down, taking Gnasher hits. Who knows what will happen next. He needs to die fast.
20.jpg
Aurora grabbed her Potion of Firebreath and charged- into the yuan ti mages, into the elder umber hulks, into the giants trolls. Torgal was among them, on the ground. She quaffed her potion and raced away, ending Torgals reign, and drawing the fast moving trolls and umbers to the main hall, where they could be dispatched with ease.
21.jpg
Circling back, Aurora found the now isolated yuan ti mages. After some thought, she decided they were not worth the magical ammo. Their leader is dead. They will leave on their own. The Keep is secure. Victory is ours. Aurora, the beast master, rolls on.
22.jpg

Mae'Var's Guild Hall is next.

Cheers,

A.

Aurora, Elven Beastmaster: Mae'Var's Guild Hall

0.jpg

0a.jpg

I've been very inconsistent with my character record and inventory screenshots. Sometimes they come from the beginning of a quest, sometimes the middle, and sometimes the end. The only thing you can count on is that you can't count on anything. Going forward, the plan is to share shots from the beginning of quests, although this particular pair comes from the end. Could this be more confusing? I don't know. I'm too confused to answer that.

I wasn't sure I wanted to do Mae'Var's Guild Hall. It isn't exactly Aurora's style. Power struggles? Thieves? Cities? A power struggle between thieves in a city? Pass. And yet, in the end, I decided to go ahead with it. I'm glad I did. This ended up being a fun quest, with Aurora's beast master skills front and center.

Since Aura has an L3 now, we took on the mephits under Pro Fire. The ice mephits were killed first, with the aid of the fire mephits, as is my custom.
1.jpg
The stone golems were killed in toe to toe melee with Destroyer of the Hills equipped.
2.jpg
Onto Rayic himself. Once combat triggered, Aurora took a moment to observe. The greatest threat here is Symbol Stun. That can be countered with a Potion of Freedom in my install, but a Potion of Freedom would curtail Aurora's max movement rate, making summons more dangerous. Eliminating that skeleton warrior, while maintaining distance, and keeping our aura clear should be our first move.
3.jpg
Aurora moved to the northeast corner and summoned Mr. Efreeti, hoping he'd handle the skeleton warrior. He succeeded, but was FoD'ed soon after. That's fine. We're comfortable with the trade.
4.jpg
Time to send in the animals. Rayic laughed off Animal Summoning I, and was amused, at first, by Aurora's follow up Animal Summoning III.
5.jpg
But when Aurora's Dispelling Arrow landed, that cave bear started to look different to Rayic. Suddenly he was all:
giphy-1.gif
Our cave bear got the kill.
6.jpg
Well done, Mr. Cave Bear. Take a moment to celebrate. You deserve it.
giphy.gif
Against Torgal, it's best to go straight for the big man. Facing Mae'Var, it's better to do the opposite. Take down the little guys. They're a threat, and they can be dispatched with ease. Animal Summoning II and III gave us a nice set of critters for this fight. Their task was to take down Mae'Var's lackeys.
7.jpg
With support from Mr. Efreeti, they succeeded.
10.jpg
Now all by his lonesome, Mae'Var cast Monster Summoning. Sadly for him, he got a dire wolf, which Aurora immediately charmed.
11.jpg
I considered using a dispelling arrow at this point, but decided that we had things under control. Mae'Var mustered a Chaos and a Hold Person but Harmony handled those threats.
12.jpg
A Glitterdust cast, in contrast, posed a challenge. We could counter this with a Potion of Invulnerability, but that would be expensive. Ultimately we decided to let the spell land. Even if we fail, the animals with hold the line.
13.jpg
Fail we did, but Glitterdust has a short duration. We can wait this out.
14.jpg
By the time Glitterdust wore off, the animals were mostly gone, but so were Mae'Var's defenses. A sling bullet finished him. Aurora is now on the cusp on level 13.
15.jpg
Aurora's posts are now up to date with her progress, and I'm not sure what's next for her. It may be a day or two before I post again. I hope you all are enjoying Aurora's run. She's been fun to play.

Cheers,

A.

I do enjoy this thread quite a bit. I've been reading it with judiciously, though. That is, if I can ever finish a standard saga run, I want to experiment with unusual solos (and maybe even SCS), so I don't want to spoil myself too much. You definitely have great concept picks here. Most solos I read about are more powergame-driven, which is not my scene.

Glad you're enjoying the tread, @JustKneller

My take is that power comes from attention to detail, not the build of your character. The role playing elements of my runs are done for the pure joy of it, but also because they facilitate stronger play. The more alive my character feels, the better I play. The better I play, the more "powerful" my character becomes. Aurora the beast master is plenty powerful because I enjoy her. Knowing that others enjoy her makes her stronger still.

And so you know, @JustKneller , you're more than welcome to share your Icewind Dale run in this thread, when the time comes. We can accommodate other Infinity Engine games, too.

Cheers,

A.

@Alesia_BH I totally agree. Having an RP dimension has me invest more in the characters and use them to their fullest. On the backburner, I'm trying to come up with a good solo concept. Someone that makes sense coming from Candlekeep, isn't a bad guy, but would still tell Imoen to shove off (after giving up life in Candlekeep to follow GW), and would make an for interesting (i.e. not OP) saga run. The ditching Imoen bit is the hard part. The guilt of it pushes me to make it a siblings run. 😁

Aurora, Elven Beastmaster: Mencar and Co.
0.jpg

I still haven't decided where Aurora is headed next but I do know it will require the Cloak of Non-Detection. And so I had a brief session last night just to fight Mencar and Co. This was my smoothest and most enjoyable Mencar fight since my return from sabbatical. I have Aurora's animals to thank for that. Up to this point, the beast master kit really has been a boon. Aurora's weapons are fine. Her armor is fine. Her animals are grand. It's good to be a beast master in early-mid SoA.

Here we see Aurora and her menagerie of animals as the battle begins. We got good rolls on both Animal Summoning II and Animal Summoning III.
1.jpg
I'm a heavy potion user. I still don't use them enough. My fears of running out are never realized. In Aurora's game I intend to be more aggressive. In this battle she went with Potion of Hill Giant Strength, Potion of Invulnerability, Potion of Fire Resistance and Oil of Speed. She also layered in Shield, RoAC II and DUHM.

The Potion of Invulnerability was a tough call. With RoAC II, Aurora's save v spells is 1, and her save v polymorph is -1. That, combined with the Shield of Harmony and Call of the Wild, covers all arcane disabler threats save Slow from L6 down. Amon's book only goes up to 5. RoAC II is easily dispelled, though, via Divination, and so Aurora would still need to be careful with her aura. The Potion of Invulnerability provided an extra layer of security.

Seeking to score Sandthief, we blocked in Brennan Riesling with bears. The bears did much of the work here but Gnasher got the kill.
2.jpg

Amon launched a Chaos. Aurora, immune via Harmony, was unaffected, but her critters succumbed. Happily, they still kept gnawing on their targets, Mencar and Orcslicer respectively. A sling bullet finished Orcslicer while Mencar tangled with a bear.
3.jpg
With the animal army growing thin, Aurora faded and summoned more, via Animal Summoning II. By now, though, the animals had accomplished all that could be expected of them. Aurora would need to finish Mencar, Amon and Pooky.
5.jpg
As Mencar closed, Aurora quaffed a Potion of Absorption. Paired with her Girdle of Bluntness, it made Mencar tactically irrelevant, meat in a can, to be pounded into submission.
6.jpg
There's little Amon and Pooky can do. Aurora's disabler defenses are sound, and she's protected from MMs via Shield. An MMA was all they could muster. That was the only damage Aurora took in the fight.
7.jpg
The Crimson Dart peeled through the skins and got the kill. When disruption isn't needed, I prefer peeling skins with darts instead of Tuigan. No sense in sacrificing the shield. A satisfying fight. I may not know what's next for Aurora, but at least she'll have Sandthief and the Cloak of Non-Detection.
8.jpg

Cheers,

A.

Quick Note on Aurora's Game:

Sad news, everyone. I haven't finalized my decision, but I'm leaning towards retiring Aurora. While fighting Draug Fea's crew, Aurora withdrew south, near Roger the Fence. I expected him to run in fear, like most merchants do. Instead he joined the fight, siding with Aurora's enemies.
X.jpg

Losing Roger's potions is a major blow. As an elf, Aurora needs save buff potions. Playing with a 75% nerf to XP from kills, she needs potions of heroism, power and strength. I think it best that I retire Aurora rather than letting her run short of resources.

I intend to do an accounting of the resources this evening. I'll make a final decision then.

Cheers,

A.

I believe Adratha has those potions as well and you usually side with her vs Khan Zahraa, so it's not so bad after all. Not sure if her stock is 'unlimited' but at the same time don't know about Roger's one too in this matter. And also Mrs. Cragmoon in the Bridge District has a quite nice stock of those potions.

Thanks for the reminder, Serg :)

I'm aware of Adratha and Cragmoon, of course. Roger's selection is different. He has three Potions of Magic Shielding and a full complement of high end exceptional strength potions, including storm and cloud. Neither Adratha nor Cragmoon carry those. Roger's selection is more similar to the Ust Natha offerings. I wouldn't be surprised if those two were clones. Not sure.

Fortunately, I picked up the Potions of Magic Shielding earlier. It really boils down to the strength potions, and that's a loss I can stomach. At the moment we have DUHM. We'll pick up enough in the Underdark to get us through the post Spellhold phase into ToB, when we'll get DUHM back. We'll push through, in any case.

Cheers,

A.

Aurora, Elven Beast Master: Planar Prison, Part 1

0.jpg

Congratulations to me! I won the crown!
giphy 7.23.09 PM.gif

Yeah. I freely admit that I overreacted to the whole hostile Roger situation. I just really like potions. Let's continue, shall we?

It took me awhile to choose Aurora's next destination. Ultimately I decided that the Boots of Speed are too good to pass up, so I went with the Planar Prison. All we need is a tactic for dealing with the Warden's Symbol: Stun. I have one in mind.

Our quest began with a fateful decision that turned out to be a mistake.
1.jpg
In retrospect I should have paid the man. If I had paid, Roger and Aurora would still be friends, and we'd all be better off for it. Alas, we decided to fight. And while Tarnor and Co fell, the battle exacted a price greater than a thousand gold.

Gaius packs Death Spell, so Aurora sent her animals in waves, beginning with an Animal Summoning I dire wolf. Gaius, ever predictable, cast away. Thanks you for your service, Mr. Dire Wolf. Time to charge, my furry companions! Not you, Hanna. Let the lions and bears handle this.
2.jpg
The animals were overmatched in this company, so Aurora quickly found herself falling back. Here we see Aurora finishing Draug Fea, with Mr. Efreeti by her side.
3.jpg
The Reflex forced Tarnor and Gallchobhair into melee. Aurora, under Oil of Speed, had no reason to engage. Instead she fell back, landing devastating blows with her strength damage stacking sling.
4.jpg
A clever strategy, or so I thought. I soon learned that it had a drawback. Roger went hostile. This may be an unintended consequence of David's Better Calls for Help component, but I have chosen to accept it. Farewell, delicious potions.
5.jpg
Troubled by the possibility of drawing Keldorn into the fight, Aurora stood her ground against Gallchobhair. A Gnasher tick got the kill. At 11-16 damage per hit, plus strength damage, Gnasher is a formidable weapon. It foils spells and breaks morale, too. Keep your metal weapons. Aurora is fine with wood.
6.jpg
For those wondering about the missing Potion of Stone Form in the quick slot, Aurora drank it after RoAC II expired.

Circling back south, Aurora found Gaius. An Ice Storm x 3 sequencer is a nice idea, Gaius but, idk, maybe you should be running GoI or Protection from Cold?
7.jpg
Tarnor falls. And now that Tarnor is dead, that Doom doesn't really matter, since we can shrug off Hold Person or Domination, thanks to Harmony, and neither Zorl nor Rengaard invest L5s in Greater Command. Just clean up now.
8.jpg
After the fight, I conferred with Aurora and broke down the Roger situation. Without Roger's potions, we'd be short of resources for the rest of the adventure. Retiring is the only sensible choice. She just stared at me. Then she was all:
giphy.gif
Fair point, Aurora. And if you're going to proceed, I guess I have no choice but to go along. Let's do this.
17.jpg

I'll post on the Planar Prison soon.

Cheers,

A.

Aurora, Elven Beast Master: The Planar Prison, Part 2

0.jpg

0a.jpg

In the opening Planar Prison battle Aurora took a backseat to Mr. Efreeti. He got the party started with a fortuitous and unintentional crit insta-kill of the bounty hunter mage.
1.jpg
He then proceeded to tear apart Aurora's remaining foes. Leave some for me, my fiery friend.
3.jpg
RoAC II provided protection from the Pixie Prick by bringing Aurora's save v death down to zero.
4.jpg
In this edition of SCS the thrall battle has become a lengthy onslaught, with waves of foes. We initiated the fray by sending our animals after the thrall mage. They struggled to gain traction amidst the thrall's Teleport Field, but they successfully ran distraction. The thrall's Chaos was thwarted by Harmony.
5.jpg
As the battle wound down, the mage thrall tossed a Slow. Here we see an example of how much easier it is to play a halfling warrior. A halfling could make that -3, and if facing a transmuter, or if tagged by Malison, she could just equip the Sword of Arvoreen. Aurora, in contrast, would need to counter with Potion of Invulnerability to reliably thwart that spell. Slow is a minor concern here so we let the spell land, saving the potion.
7.jpg
Aurora failed her save against Slow, but still finished the mage with the Crimson Dart.
8.jpg
Our animals are still alive, but they're missing. Where art thou, mountain bear?
9.jpg
Apparently the mage thrall's Teleport Field swept our mountain bear over to the umbers. It's time to engage. The umbers were taken down under Potion of Regeneration, with Destroyer of the Hills equipped. The healing potion stack is holding steady, still untouched.
10.jpg
The elven thrall mage advances and tosses a Chaos. Harmony saves the day once again. Unsurprisingly, Harmony has been Aurora's most valuable item. In ToB that crown will pass to The Reflex. No metal weapons: no problem. No metal armor: ditto. Just don't take my shields away. Shields matter. Metal weapons and armor are optional niceties in comparison.
11.jpg
Chaos is no threat, but there is an enchantment spell that could threaten the potion supply. When the elven thrall went enchantment again, Aurora deployed her Darts of Stunning, in defense of the potion supply. Our Potions of Stone Form and Invulnerability are precious limited resources.
12.jpg
Once the thrall wave was defeated, we took a rest in advance of the Master of Thralls and Warden. Mr. Effreeti and the bears lead the way, as Aurora fired away with her sling. We're using Arla's Dragonbane these days. Everad is third on the buy list, following the BoIB and Blackblood.
15.jpg
Onto the Warden. There are two threats here: Symbol: Stun and Slow. A halfling warrior could just equip the Sword of Arvoreen and laugh off both. Aurora will need to finesse this. The Warden's Symbol: Stun is loaded into a Chain. It's highly unlikely that the Warden will be able to launch a Remove in conjunction with it. Nonetheless, we want his aura clouded when we reveal ourselves. Go, go winter wolf: draw out a spell- any spell.
17.jpg
Here we go. Aurora pre-buffed with a Potion of Stone Form and maintained a clear aura on contact. If somehow, someway a Remove landed, the plan was to deploy a Potion of Magic Shielding. Happily, we evaded Remove as expected, so we can go cheaper. Stacking a Potion of Invulnerability atop a Potion of Stone Form will let Aurora make a conjurer's -4.
18.jpg
The Warden is closing. Time to launch an Arrow of Dispelling.
19.jpg
Our only answer to Maze is expensive and strictly limited, so meleeing high level mages is out of the question. We need to keep this bloke at a distance. The Warden lands a Remove, and follows with a Slow. Since he detects the invisible, we can't give that Slow cast a chance. This is going to cost us a Potion of Invulnerability.
20.jpg
21.jpg
The price of countering that Slow was high, but we're in the clear now. There's nothing left in the Warden's book that can threaten us. Quest complete.
22.jpg
Windspear Hills is next.

Cheers,

A.
