I'm doing a third and final run of Kingmaker before I try Wrath of the Righteous. For this run, all of the NPCs in the party are mercs. Party composition is:

Charname (Kyra): Sorcerer
Haldran: Paladin
Ukura: Armored Hulk
Kursk: Slayer
Leflin: Druid
Sadie: Eldritch Scoundrel

Leflin has a pet Smilodon. I don't know how (or if) we can give her a name, but I imagine that her name is Fluffy. I wonder why we tend to give our pets cute names, even when they're intimidating, dangerous animals, lol. Fluffy is an absolute savage, she has like 5 attacks per rounds, everyone else has just 1 or 2 attacks per round.

Intriguing mysteries everywhere in this game. After a rather annoying fight through nasty-swarm-land, I encountered a mysterious kobold that is obviously more than he seems... I also investigated Daeran's background with some rather shocking results. Here is a screenshot of me talking to the Kobold.

My party cleared the Kenabres Market Square area and reached the 5th level. What I have learned so far:

Demoralize Persuasion ability works amazingly effectively similar to how it was in Kingmaker. Once a mighty opponent is shaken or frightened, it's much easier to hit them.

Wands are extremely powerful. My own party wizard is Nenion, so having a wand of Grease helps tremendously.

Slumber Hex is very handy. Not only it's a free sleep spell not dependent on the enemy's level, but it's also a source of free Attacks of Opportunity for party members when the enemy tries to get up.

Killing demons - hard to beat melee damage in terms of effectiveness:

The highest damage so far is 93.

With the 5th level choices, I decided to give Daeran one level as a Thug. Whenever he successfully uses Intimidate to demoralize a creature, the duration of the shaken condition is increased by 1 round. In addition, if the target is shaken for 4 or more rounds, the thug can instead decide to make the target frightened for 1 round.

Seelah and Wenduag both have Outflank now. Whenever they are flanking the same creature, their flanking bonus on attack rolls increases to +4. In addition, whenever they score a critical hit against the flanked creature, it provokes an attack of opportunity from an ally.

So far, I have spent money on buying healing potions, Extend Metamagic Rod (for spells like Blur, Enlarge Person, and Reduce Person), and a few different scrolls. Party gold is ~5.5k.

I find interesting that the most posts regarding WoTR is about combat tactics or class builds and the actual main story and NPC side quests are mostly overlooked. What do you guys think of the world, story, NPCs? Personally I find WoTR's story one of the better I experienced recently and was pleasently surprised with it after being disappointed by Kingmaker.

I completed the game as an Angel and really liked the story and some side quests. Nenio's quest will never be completed again, though :)

Probably because @alice_ashpool started it mainly for minimal/no-reload challenge.

If you start discussing important WotR plot points and NPC stories in detail, please give a warning and use spoiler tags, I haven't played the game yet and could simply stay out of the thread, but neither has @m7600 who is posting about Kingmaker, and both @Antimatter and @Xzarloxara haven't finished it yet.

I've just accidentally noticed a strange thing - Linzi, while not having any sources of Sneak Attacks short of wearing the Necklace of Double Crosses (which, according to description, should only provide a melee sneak attack vs flat-footed opponents) made a ranged sneak attack with her light crossbow... Does anybody know whether it's a bug or a feature (and item's description is just wrong)?

I was mainly interested in general impressions, didn't mean to discuss specific story details. For someone who plays crpgs mainly for story and exploration, this is something that interests me the most.

Yes, I have noticed this in the past. I assumed it was some old oversight as it makes the necklace much better since the AoO penalty will never trigger.

Usually give the Amulet to Valerie though, since who doesn't want their tower shielder to somehow be getting sneak attacks in 😇

Thanks for your answer! Yes, I know you give the amulet to Valerie, but in my case she has 3 levels of Rogue (aim for 4 levels for Debilitating Injury) and thus 2 dice of SA already, while Linzi is pure Bard and those 'free' ranged 2D6 SA in addition to +4 Mobility/Trickery/Stealth are more benefitial for her in my opinion.

I'd be happy to discuss this after I finish WoTR, of course. For now, from what I've seen, the game gives the player more urgency to proceed further right from the beginning, compared to Kingmaker. Companions are more fleshed out and have more intrigue about them.

My party defended the tavern and killed their first Nabassu. Seelah was the first party death due to Level Drain, but in this case, it was relatively free as we found a reviving item in the city.

I finished Chapter 1 and got some good news and some bad news, followed by good news!

First of all, as part of upgrading the party to lvl 6, we got a new animal: Seelah's new horse, Bucephalas. Unlike Binky, it's a Bulwark brown horse. Now, the bad news. Camellia was critted and killed in a blink of an eye by a Cambion Ranger. There are lots of dangers in the Gray Garrison, but I didn't expect a common archer would do so much damage.

20221025222247_1.jpg

I took a break after that, thinking about my choices: I could just reload, I could use the Terendelev's Scale, I could just continue without reviving her (and spend money on an expensive scroll later). After some consideration, I decided to stick to it. I couldn't open one closed door (a sealed blue door) because nobody in the party could pick that lock, and I had to aggro a few traps (and bash one lock using the Athletics skill). Otherwise, the party did well. I didn't want to use the Terendelev's Scale not to lock myself out of the Dragon path in the future.

There was one especially nasty enemy left in the area - Jeslyn. If you allow the fight to happen naturally, she'll summon Locusts' Swarm, and the whole party will be literally eaten to death. But we had 2 quick horses and hasted Wenduag. So instead of engaging the horde of demons that stand in that room between the door and Jeslyn, we just charged forward. I appreciate the fact the game allowed my strategy to work just wonders. Oh, and btw, Daeran who has 1 level as a Thug, has had Intimidate as his go-to action every round, and it worked amazingly effectively. You can see demons fleeing in terror while our warriors finish Jeslyn:

And another piece of good news! After finishing the chapter and arriving in the Crusaders' camp, I found Camellia already revived! So I didn't even have to spend any money there!

These are the Mythic abilities I've picked for my party:

MC - Ever Ready
Seelah - Mythical Beast
Camellia - Abundant Casting
Wenduag - Unrelenting Assault
Nenio - Abundant Casting
Daeran - Abundant Casting

It was a close call on which ability to pick for my main character, I decided to try Ever Ready: whenever you make an attack of opportunity, you gain a bonus on the attack roll and damage roll equal to your mythic rank. The number of attacks of opportunity you can make each round is increased by two.

I couldn't open one closed door (a sealed blue door) because nobody in the party could pick that lock,
AFAIK the only way to open that door is:
You should visit Blackwing Library before the attack on Defender's Heart to save mages there and they will join you in Gray Garrison and if they'll survive they could dispel the seal on the door.

Yeah, that area is gone for good. @Serg_BlackStrider I did the Blackwing Library thing properly, it's just that enemies in the Gray Garrison killed those supporting mages before (so they weren't able to open the door). But you should be able to open that door anyway with high Trickery (and probably picklocks), at least according to sources online. Not a big deal (I missed some minor loot, probably a magical item).
