Not sure about the legacy behaviour, but I did run some tests on my install (BG2EE v 2.6.6.0, SCS v 34.3) with the following results:
  • Spell Shield provides full protection against the anti-magic ray (AMR), including both the dispel effect as well as the disable magic use effect.
  • Spell Shield doesn't get dispelled by the AMR and persists.
  • In the absence of Spell Shield, the AMR does not remove spell protections such as MGoI/GoI, Spell Immunity and Spell Deflection (and presumably Spell Turning and Spell Trap).
  • All of these are true irrespective of the difficulty applied to the Smarter Beholders SCS component (I have tested it on Tactical and Insane).
BG wiki (here) states that: ''SCS or Spell Revisions, or both, will change Spell Shield to block one instance of the anti-magic ray, and then be consumed.'' In my case it's definitely not SCS, although I don't know whether or not there is an option to toggle this behaviour when actually installing SCS or the respective component. If not, then Spell Shield is indeed the king, which is why I had certain reservations about using it already during the Unseeing Eye quest, as it effectively trivializes the threat and induces a business-as-usual type of approach towards the beholders (while I feel they deserve something more tailored). That said, I may need to reevaluate that approach when other options would be too risky, especially if there are spellcasting Elder Orbs around.

By the way, the Elder Orb (BEHELD01) did not attempt to cast Imprisonment nor Maze on our solo protagonist during the tests.

(Between the legacy behavior, SCS’s modifications, and the EE, I’m pretty sure the behavior has changed over the years. I usually know the change history of interactions like this, but since I always rolled with Spell Shield I missed the underlying mechanics in this case.)

The purpose of our visit to the Windspear Hills was nothing less than Carsomyr. However, we ran into a surprisingly tough resistance already at Garren's cabin - Plath Rededge, the elven cleric that teleports in with her bandit entourage, was somehow made immune to almost all types of damage other than Scarlet-Ninja To poison (we tried slashing, piercing, crushing, fire and electricity).

I suspect it was some kind of a bug, possibly caused by our Time Trap which tripped without triggering the time stop, but we decided to go along with it. While in the area, we remembered the promise we had given to the captive dryads at Chateau Irenicus a long time ago and returned their acorns to Vaelasa.

Into the dungeon. The ruhk transmuter got eliminated by our Firetooth (with Scarlet Ninja-To in the off-hand for 8 APR under IH), while Remove Magic and True Seeing (via Book of Infinite Spells) took care of his protections.

Samia and her band were unfortunate enough to witness the double time stop Time Trap that has been discussed in this thread. Running Tenser's and Improved Haste via Bracers of Blinding Strike, Sorsha took down half of their party before the action resumed. The rest was just cleanup.

Expecting Greater Wolfweres ahead, Sorsha quaffed an Oil of Speed before proceeding. While the corridor proved to be empty, we still put the potion to a good use against golems, trash mobs and also Tazok's bodyguards.

Our plan for fighting Conster was not to fight him at all. We didn't want him to start removing any of our spell protections that we would otherwise need to prepare (and which were needed later for Firkraag), so instead we simply murdered him under Time Trap.

Following that, Sorsha completed her full pre-buff set (SI: Ab, SI: D, GoI, ProFire, Spirit Armor, ProEvil, II, MIs, Blur, Shield, Stoneskin, Fireshield: Blue and Spell Shield), pushed the Tenser trigger and was ready to do some monster hunting.

Sorsha, human bard: Part 36 - continued

While I had initially toyed with the idea of death by Kachiko, Sorsha insisted that Firkraag doesn't deserve the satisfaction of knowing that we're doing something special for him. Instead, she rushed in heads-on in the most barbaric fashion, waving her trusted Scarlet Ninja-To and Belm.

Firkraag's attacks kept coming in fast, rarely missing its target - Stoneskins and MIs were our lifeline here and the speed of our own damage output was of the essence.

I'm not sure why, but our Fireshield: Blue seemed not to pick up Firkraag's hits (he's not immune to cold and the backlash damage should bypass MR). Maybe it has something to do with his weapon range / size and after all it would be fairly anti-climatic if such an epic battle could be trivialized by one L4 spell.

While Sorsha was making fast progress, his hefty HP and reappearing Stoneskins continued to be a hurdle. The only melee weapon in Sorsha's personal armory dealing non-fire elemental damage was Dragon's Breath - so we tried it only to find out that the damage is blocked by MR and therefore we reverted to peeling away the stoneskins with our dual-wield.

Another weapon, Ilbratha, was pulled out from the Bag of Holding to refresh Sorsha's Mirror Images. We knew that for so long as our SI: Ab is intact, we should be able to protect our items/scrolls/potions from dispels.

While the Red Dragon Breath could not bypass our fire resistance, we were shortly on defensive when our Stoneskins yielded and our Spell Shield got whipped away.

Sorsha's now at level 36. To sum up, her current weapon proficiencies and HLAs are (in no particular order): flails (new), daggers, two-handed swords, slings, short swords, scimitars, axes, staves, shortbows, two-handed weapon style, two weapon style, Spike Trap (2x), Time Trap (3x), Evasion (1x), Greater Evasion (2x), Avoid Death (2x), Enhanced Bard Song, Magic Flute, UAI.

Adventuring these days seemed to be filled with filing the gaps in Sorsha's inventory. Our most immediate acquisition was to be the Flail of the Ages. Although we didn't have to, we nonetheless decided to wipe out Torgal. Because we hate Torgal. Apologies for the unhealthy number of traps, but Sorsha's book was running fairly dry after clearing the entire keep and we didn't want to take any chances here.

Next up were the city's liches. By the way, rakshasas are another type of enemies whose defenses are completely trivialized by Spike Trap use.

Don’t tell me that this thing will take down even demiliches, lol. But first, the Shade Lich. Running Pro Magic Energy (instead of relying on BoIB as is our usual approach) and ProAcid among other buffs, our plan was to go Power Word: Silence -> Death Fog -> Azuredge. We had a good start, but the lich's contingencies thwarted our chances for earning a quick kill.

Lol, this is clearly absurd! But to Sorsha's defense - this was actually a battle of truly epic proportions that had cost us 2x Potions of Magic Shielding, 1x Potion of Invulnerability, 2x Oil of Speed and 2x Potion of Regeneration (despite reapplying our SI: Abjuration three times and also refreshing our Spell Shield once). We also expended all of our Evasion/Greater Evasion/Avoid Death HLAs to keep our saves vs. death and vs. spell in check, as well as used all of our Time Traps. With pauses, the entire thing took 27 minutes in real time, the demilich was down to L1 spells and that single Spike Trap was only set after Sorsha pounded Kangaax with Carsomyr to badly injured and his morale failed (sic!).

[Apparently the links to the previous posts are counted towards the text limitations of a post, so I will no longer be including these.]

Sorsha's next destination was the Twisted Rune. Our preparations involved SI: Abjuration contingency (See Enemy), Potion of Cloud Giant Strength, Stoneskin, Shield, Spirit Armor, ProFire, ProCold, ProEvil, Fireshield: Blue, Blur, MIs, II, Spell Shield, IH, Spell Deflection. SI: D. We entered the portal, laid down two Time Traps and proceeded to meet the Runemasters and their entourage.

As soon as Shangalar jumped off the table, our time stop got triggered, SI: Abjuration kicked-in and we rushed towards Vaxall, who was our priority numero uno (due to the risk of getting dispelled by anti-magic ray in case our Spell Shield gets removed). Sorsha's initial plan to take him down with a series of quick swings by FotA + Scarlet Ninja-To came into a sudden halt with Vaxall's PfMW contingency.

Instead, Sorsha quaffed a Potion of Firebreath and turned her attention to the helpless fighter Revanek.

With the main threat out of the way, we waited out two subsequent Time Stops by Layene and Shangalar, only refreshing our Spell Shield in the meantime.

When the action resumed, Sorsha dropped a Death Spell to exile the trio of incoming Mordy Swords.

With that, we collected the Staff of the Magi, dropped Vaxall's eye into the cauldron and returned to Athkatla to enjoy a well earned rest in the Five Flagons.

I'm not a fan of the staff's design makeover in the EE (it looks like you're carrying a street lamp), though I sure appreciate SCS nerfing the item by removing the permanent invisibility. Still, with Sorsha's Thac0, it's an extremely potent tool capable of quickly dispelling anything that's not currently running PfMW, Absolute Immunity or SI: Abjuration, not to mention that Soul Trap will provide an additional layer of protection to our buffs in a world full of offensive abjuration magics without stretching our spellbook and that +2 bonus to saving throws is nothing to sneeze at.

The testing grounds for our new weapon was the Guarded Compound, where Sion was about to find out that if you're a mage and get dispelled under time stop, you die.

The legitimate question that arises is whether or not the SoM dispel is overpowered. While it's true that only UAI rogues can use the staff efficiently (although mages / sorcerers can sneak in a guaranteed hit or two during their Time Stops as well), the fact that it does not allow for a save makes it extremely potent. On the other hand, Carsomyr's nerfed on-hit dispel makes it rather obsolete, as it allows for save vs. spell without any penalty whatsoever. It feels that a meaningful penalty (something between -4 to -6) to the saving throw could be the right balance between the two. For now, Sorsha will continue using SoM as is, but I may decide against it in the future.

With the majority of quests around Athkatla complete (notable exceptions being Planar Sphere, the Illithid Hideout in the sewers and killing Thaxy), Sorsha was ready to go after Bodhi. In terms of our inventory, we recently got Gesen and iMoD forged by Cromwell, restocked our potion case with Roger and Mrs. Cragmoon and also purchased the two ProMagic scrolls from Ribald. Sorsha ditched the Claw of Kazgaroth, which had been in an almost constant use since our Sword Coast days, in favour of Gaxx. Also, the Helm of Defense recovered from the Guarded Compound will now serve as our primary headgear, replacing Sorsha's personal item granted to her at character creation (she still keeps the hood in the Bag of Holding should we need its undispellable fear immunity down the road).

For some reason, only Sir Vanstraaten* showed up when we entered the heart of Bodhi's lair. Must be that both Drizzt and Arkanis thought that Sorsha is too overleveled at this point to deserve any extra help. Any they would probably be right.

The last time we had fought Bodhi here, we hadn’t played fair - she became the victim of our very first Time Trap, without ever having the chance to defend herself. Today, Sorsha was prepared to give her a fair fighting chance. And by fair, we mean equal numbers on both sides. Bodhi had an entourage of 4 vampires and 4 grimwarders, Sorsha had Eric - we had to make that even.

@Borco I didn't catch it in any of your posts I've read, but I'm wondering, how are you handling (enemy) traps as a bard? I know there's a handful of nasty maze and petrify traps here and there. That's game over for a solo.

@JustKneller Not sure if it's a good answer, but the solution is metagaming - knowing beforehand where these potentially game-ending traps are makes it possible to counter them (either through saving throws, magic resistance or corresponding protections/immunities). Damage traps or traps that allow a save, such as petrification, are somewhat easier to handle, as all classes have ways of mitigating particular type of damage or lowering their saving throws. Maze is much more tricky, because there is no save - you'll need Spell Immunity: Conjuration, Spell Deflection/Spell Turning, Chaotic Commands, Enrage or 100% magic resistance (think of the mustard jelly form via Polymorph: Self / Cloak of the Sewers or the green ProMagic scroll).

That said, for me personally, the most difficult part of the game in terms of traps is Chateau Irenicus, which is why most of my solo characters allow Imoen to tag along (I remember at least one run that had ended in Ellesime's room due to sheer trap damage).

Sorsha, human bard: Part 40

Our progress in Suldanessellar would be swift were it not for the excessive numbers of tenacious rakshasas. Fortunately, the city's layout allowed us to take advantage of our speed and separate our enemies. Divide and conquer.

At the time we already knew that adamantine golems are especially vulnerable to our Spike Traps. There was little sense in fighting them otherwise, the only issue was ensuring that the traps would not be tripped by some of their smaller counterparts.

As soon as we spied the group of two rakshasa Maharajas and three Rajas at the Temple, we knew that we were in for a long fight. Here’s the opening scene of the battle, when Sorsha taunted the group in order to lure them towards our Time Trap and followed up with SoM dispel -> Mirror Image ->FotA + Scarlet Ninja-To -> Remove Magic.

Despite our party-wide dispel, our enemies kept refreshing their defensive buffs and we were soon on the defensive under the pressure of their abjuration attacks, as a result of which we lost Spell Shield, SI: D and haste (via Oil of Speed).

We led their frontrunners back to Elhan, where Sorsha had prepared another Time Trap, to slow them down and get our Improved Haste up. Completing a full circle around the city's platforms, we were back at the temple where two of rakshasa's lingered together with three Mordy Swords. Equipping BoIB to thwart ADHW, Sorsha first exiled the summons with Death Spell.

That gave us the window of opportunity to engage in melee, with dispelling strikes by SoM paving the way through their Stoneskins and MIs for subsequent FotA hits.

In the absence of SI: D, our own illusionary were removed by a divination cast and Sorsha got hit by PW: Blind and Vampiric Touch in a quick succession. Unfortunately, I messed up the sequence then, whereby I clicked the Shadow Door panic button first, immediately realizing that we should have had applied SI: D prior to it. Doing this the other way round meant that our II was dispelled by the maharaja’s True Seeing before Sorsha’s SI: D kicked in.

Nevertheless, we managed to deal the spell-depleted rakhasha thanks to our own True Seeing (via Book of Infinite Spells, as usual) and reapply II before finishing the three remaining foes in the Tenser form with the help of Gaxx IH and SoM dispels.

Sorsha, human bard: Part 40 - continued

Even though I did not remember much details about fighting Nizidra, I was aware of the key facts - he dishes out acid damage, uses Insect Plague-like ability, punches really hard and is a lousy spellcaster. With that in mind, our plan was to do this in a full monty Tenser mode, since we were not expecting PfMW spamming and therefore we shouldn’t be needing Remove Magic. Tenser THAC0 should also allow us to overcome his whooping -17 AC. In terms of defense, the crucial components were ProAcid (obviously), MIs and Stoneskin. We also ran SI: Conjuration to thwart the biting insects (although I believe that SCS Fireshields do stop them as well, but just to be on the safe side). Given that Sorsha would need to this without access to her book, PfMW was stored in a contingency to give us a free pass at least for the initial stage of the battle. Here we go:

After that it was full throttle with FotA and Scarlet Ninja-To melee attacks, supplemented with DBFs.
Shortly before our PfMW expired, Sorsha switched to Soul Reaver. With his APR, we didn't like the fact that he kept on hitting us even on low single digit rolls. The sword, with its cumulative on-hit THAC0 penalty, could fix that.

Our fight with the Tree Jon had only one technical hiccup, which was me not expecting that you get teleported to him once you kill the last parasite. Note taken. With our buffs incomplete, we first tried to buy some time by laying down a Time Trap - it came too late and got countered by Jon's red circle.

Having no other good options, we ran. Avoiding eye contact with the enemy, we gradually prepared our remaining spells and Sorsha also removed two trailing Hakeashars with her Death Spell.

Sorsha, human bard: Part 42

Preparing for the showdown with Irenicus for the first time in my no-reloading career certainly got my hands sweaty. In fact, we could have had finished the whole thing (with whatever result that might be) in the same session as the Tree Jon, but I just lost the confidence and quit the game before collecting that last Tear of Bhaal.

When I returned to it the next evening, Sorsha was there, ready as ever. I was reminded of how I'd promised her that Five Flagons premiere, which she never got to see due to other commitments, and I knew that this was not the time to fail her. She had started her run on 12 April 2023 and today was 19 March 2024. That's quite a long journey and I wanted to make it worthwhile for her. Sorsha deserved it.

Okay, let's get this over with. The day before the battle, we prepared our Contingency (See Enemy -> SI: D) and summoned 4 invisible stalkers - with their 9 hour duration, they were the only summons capable of supporting us in the fight even after resting.

Normally, I wouldn't allow Sorsha to use more than a day's worth of traps for a single encounter, but knowing that these might behave quirky during the cutscene ahead, we wanted to have a backup. Therefore, she laid down one Time Trap directly at the gate and one in the SW section of the area prior to resting, allowing us to keep untapped our per-rest resources (4x Time Trap, 2x Spike Trap) for use during the fight.

Sorsha's buffs, more or less in the order of application, were: Stoneskin, SoM Spell Trap, ProFire, ProCold, ProAcid, Spirit Armor, Potion of Storm Giant Strength, Potion of Magic Protection, Shield, Resist Fear, Potion of Invulnerability, ProEvil, Spell Shield, Blur, MIs, GoI (via Magic Flute), IH and Tenser's.

Tenser was a difficult call, but we knew that Jon's Balors would need to be disposed of asap. And with our saves vs. death in the safe zone against their vorpal swords, we could afford doing this without access to our book, in particular to PfMW.

However, there were two mistakes - the first one being facepalmingly obvious, the other one being more of a lesson learned. As you might have noted, those potions of ours were not protected by SI: Ab. I've become so comfortable with ignoring the dispel threat to Sorsha's own spells on account of our level advantage that I keep forgetting about the vulnerability of our other buffs. The second flaw was wasting the potential of the SoM Spell Trap by incorporating it into our prebuffs, thus robbing Sorsha of the option to activate it while Tensered - instead of using it to refresh our spell protections after the initial abjuration attacks, we exposed it to them. Pre-buffing with Spell Deflection instead would have been a better call.

As predicted, our Time Trap at the gate tripped during the cutscene and was wasted without triggering the time stop. Sorsha's and Jon's contingencies fired away - he certainly had more in store there, lol.

With our cannon fodder already at the front lines, we tried to catch the attention of one of the balors and lure him towards our second trap.

Jon mostly wasted his Time Stop, landed Sphere of Chaos and only then started to peel off our spell protections with KWW and RRR.

Sorsha reached her Time Trap and waited for that reassuring trigger sound. By alternating between SoM dispel hits and dual-wielding damage output, she was able to eliminate all the four demons before the (double duration) time stop expired.

When the time resumed, we saw Jon's Remove Magic projectile heading our way, just as Sorsha was trying to finish her True Seeing (via Book of Infinite Spells). That's precisely when we realized that the lack of SI: Ab had been a mistake. Consequently, we lost both our potions buffs as well as our fresh-from-of-the-oven divination cast, albeit it did at least remove Jon's current illusions including the Mislead clone in the split second before the dispel struck. By the way I'm not sure what caused that magic damage to Jon seen at one of the screenshots here.

Irenicus then started spamming PfMW, which left us with rather limited offensive options. We checked our current saves to see where we stand without the Potion of Invulnerability => vs. death -7 and vs. spell - 11, that should do (not taking into account ProEvil and SoM bonuses). Sorsha quaffed a Potion of Fire Giant Strength, equipped Reflex and called in Ras to create a distraction while we were waiting for those 4 rounds to lapse.

At the moment I wasn't sure if this was due to our Improved Invisibility expiring or due to the fact that PW: Blind can bypass it (due to its small AoE effect). The first option seemed improbable - we still had our SI: D up and I did not expect its L39 duration to expire anytime soon. However, the fact that our Mirror Images were gone as well, should have been an early warning - I usually find it extremely difficult to monitor the II status and so I tend to cast MIs (same spell duration as II) before II. This way, it's possible to tell that II is going to expire when the images are lost. The issue with this II alarm is that sometimes the images are simply removed by hits, while other times I fail to notice it in the heat of the battle (especially since I often cannot tell the difference if it's the Blur effect, with its longer duration, or 1-2 residual mirror images).

A quick look at Sorsha's saving throws confirmed that II's gone indeed. Still Tenser-locked, we went for the RoAC: II, while Jon popped us with Spell Thrust, thus finally removing our SI: D.

With Ras gone and Sorsha still blinded, we retreated south to regroup our strengths and wait for the Tenser form to expire. We called in the efreeti to buy us extra time and, with our spellbook available once again, refreshed our protective buffs including Spell Shield and SI: D. We also added Fireshield: Blue and Oil of Speed into the mix and prepared a Time Trap.

When Sorsha re-engaged Jon, he immediately started an abjuration incantation. Sorsha quickly realized what was going on and masterfully countered the incoming Remove Magic projectile with a timely SI: Ab cast.

Apparently frustrated, Irenicus once again pulled off his mean trick - PW: Blind. I was pretty sure that Sorsha's II was up at the time and this was also confirmed by the saving throw bonuses. So is it really that AoE? We'll find that out later.

Now it was our turn - with the Time Trap springing, we landed a free dispel hit with SoM and went for a kill with FotA + Scarlet Ninja-To. But this was not the Tree Jon and it wasn't going to be that easy. Furthermore, there was no double time stop window this time and Irenicus was soon back in the game.

We tried to go for the PfMW/Fireshield combo, but Jon was too smart to fall for that trick and simply ceased attacking.

A sign of things to come, Sorsha is clearly starting to hit her THAC0 limitations outside the Tenser form (albeit she was then wielding SoM, which only acts as +1 weapon in terms of to-hit bonuses).

Before we could even let this new piece of information sink in, we were facing the single most dangerous moment of Sorsha's entire run. We noticed a conjuration incantation - Sorsha instinctively stepped away from Jon, even though we were expecting some sort of a Symbol spell. To my horror, the log suddenly read: "Casts Maze: Sorsha".

Could it be that our II expired once again without me knowing?! And why on earth had we stopped using SI: C on a regular basis?! I mean I know why - because our spellbook is ever so bottlenecked at L5. I stared at the paused screen in disbelief, finding it hard to concentrate. Most of the spell protections options seemed out of question because they were simply too slow to stop the projectile. Fortunately, Sorsha's presence of mind and lightning fast reflexes did not falter - she grabbed the Potion of Magic Protection vial at her belt, quaffed it and held onto Carsomyr...

Our adversary was furious. He activated a barbaric spell trigger of IH and two Fireshields, clearly preparing to crush Sorsha in melee when his magic failed.

But Sorsha could outrun him and he seemed to hesitate - that gave us the opportunity to lay down another Time Trap and cast our last II.

When we returned to Jon, he was busy with an enchantment incantation. That signaled Malison and, with her aura clear, Sorsha used the opening to activate GoI (via Magic Flute) and stop the spell.

Sorsha knew she had to be quick - she drew her old friend Belm, with Scarlet Ninja-To in her main hand. That's 8 APR, Jon, at 15-23 damage per hit. What does your regeneration say to that? Does it even work during the time stop? I don't think so. Especially if you're poisoned.

In spite of all the hiccups, mistakes and close calls, we made it to ToB, making Sorsha my first character to successfully no-reload SoA. Irrespective of what happens next, I'm proud of our girl. She's been resourceful, flexible and - one could say - powerful. So far, her strengths have been numerous and her weaknesses have been few. I sense that, going forward, she can struggle with the ability to dish out significant damage over prolonged periods of time, as her Tenser-less THAC0 is starting to hit the ceiling. But let's not yet bury those that are still alive. The Five await and there's a lot to learn.

With a heavy heart, I'm due to report that Sorsha has perished during the first Pocket Plane challenge in ToB. It's a shame, especially since the initial fight with Illasera went smoothly (in fact almost too smoothly). But what's worse, is that I don't know what actually killed her.

The last thing I remember was Jon and Bodhi materializing in front of us, with Bodhi at melee range and Jon triggering Sphere of Chaos + Symbol: Fear sequencer. I instinctively clicked on Shadow Door and...

The only possible explanation I could come up with is that Sorsha got polymorphed into a 5HP squirrel and instantly level drained by Bodhi, before going invisible.

The level drain point would fit the bill - at the time, I was experimenting with different ways of populating our amulet, ring and cloak slots. Consequently, Sorsha was wearing Amulet of Seldarine instead of AoP, together with the Improved Cloak of Protection +2, the Claw and Gaxx. This would also explain the slower Shadow Door cast, which under the AoP casting speed bonus should normally cast instantly. How ironic would it be if our run were to end on account of Ellesime's gift for defeating Irenicus and saving the Tree of Life?

But why would Sorsha become a squirrel? After all, Sphere of Death is subject to a saving throw, which we could not possibly fail...

I'm truly puzzled. Therefore, I would kindly wish to turn to our community here for help with seeking answers. It's not the failure that troubles me, as I've been expecting it sooner or later in my first ToB no-reload, it's the ignorance regarding the reasons of it that's somewhat hard to deal with.

Now, that's an unfortunate outcome... I feel sad of your loss =(

In my first Avatars run, one of our characters Cassia (Shapeshifter with 100% magic resistance) died/chunked in the Underdark due to the Disintegration effect of Sphere of Chaos, which bypassed her MR being Natural/Nonmagical (0). I can't say right now what were her saving throws then but it seems Sorsha sould be safe there with her save vs spell value.
