Ok! I went with Selerel’s suggestion. I used the console to place Minsc, petrified, in the waylay area. The rest of the party is now in the Promenade. He’ll either survive, or not, as Tymora wills.

Thanks for the feedback everyone! I trust we can agree this is a sensible solution?

Interested to see if you can find him again
Agreed! We’ll see!

If he’s gone, he’s gone: I’m ok with that.

His petrification is 100% on me. That happened because I made an erroneous assumption about the insect spells in v35. I should have read the Read Me. No hard feelings there.

With this solution he gets the chance he deserves, however slim it may be. Will we see him again? Who knows. I’m fine with that: it’s the way things should be

I am actually quite pleased with it as enemies are more numerous and use better AI. I have also forgotten what the mods were so I am getting surprises all the time.

It's almost like getting a new game. 🙂

I am currently running a trio: an inquisitor, a berserker and a fighter thief. Tenya and Thorin have joined the party and we are now heading for Nashkel.

Tenya is good as a cleric, but needs help with strength in order to wear armour. She has DUHM memorised twice as well as Strength of One. She'll be fine once she gets the ankheg plate. Thorin is a level 7 Dwarven Defender with a lot more experience than the rest of us. He more or less forced himself on the party but since he is Neutral Good we should get along with him. He does make the party slightly larger than we planned, but that's fine. We can live with it due to his *** in war hammers.

Alena, Halfling Priest of Lathander, Canon Party Run: Interlude- The Cleansing Wind of Minsc and Boo

Ok! This is out of sequence, but since everyone is excited to hear how Minsc's stony adventure turned out, I'll jump ahead.

First, let's quickly cover the debacle that led to Minsc's predicament. Here's the original waylay.
Screenshot 2024-07-08 at 10.38.52 PM.jpg
We headed north invisible, called our summons, set our traps and buffed. The plan was to land an Insect Plague and then let the party charge in, led by Minsc. With the traditional behavior of Insect Plague that would have been peachy. With the new version it was stony. That was regrettable. Contrary to popular belief, Minsc does not enjoy getting stoned.
Screenshot 2024-07-08 at 10.44.18 PM.jpg

Screenshot 2024-07-08 at 10.52.39 PM.jpg
With David's Revised Handling of Death Effects component installed, this is a dead end. Without it there is a chance that the cleansing wind of Minsc and Boo will blow again. That's good. Consistent with popular belief, Minsc likes to blow.

Getting Minsc where he should be, as he should be, took some doing. There's a not so subtle clue as to how I made that happen in this screenshot.
Screenshot 2024-07-09 at 11.06.45 AM.jpg
Now that Minsc was out of the party, as per the original behavior, we were free to leave. We went to the Promenade, picked up a Stone to Flesh scroll, and then repeatedly moved between the Docks and the Bridge District, hoping to trigger a waylay into AR0046, the Bridge Random Encounter area. Would the waylay trigger? Would Minsc be there if it did? I had no idea. All I had was hope.

Finally, finally, we heard those fateful words: you have been waylaid by enemies. And what of Minsc? Was he there? Lo and behold!
Screenshot 2024-07-09 at 11.13.15 AM.jpg
What now? Combat could be risky, since an AoE spell would destroy Minsc. Instead, we buffed Alena to safety, and let her draw the ogres northward. Once they were far from Minsc, Alena activated her Ring of Air Control.
Screenshot 2024-07-09 at 11.15.02 AM.jpg
Still invisible, the party circled south, with their Stone to Flesh scroll at the ready. Alena broke invisibility by using her scroll. Minsc lives!
Screenshot 2024-07-09 at 11.16.01 AM.jpg

Screenshot 2024-07-09 at 11.16.06 AM.jpg
With Minsc no longer a rock, it was time to roll. We're perfectly content to let these ogres live another day. Take an extra healer Minsc, you deserve it.
Screenshot 2024-07-09 at 11.16.24 AM.jpg
And off we go! It's a good thing we gave Minsc that extra healer, because he was tagged by a MAA almost immediately.
Screenshot 2024-07-09 at 11.16.45 AM.jpg
The party is now in the Promenade, whole once again. Shoutout to Selerel and Tymora for making that happen. They're the real heroes.

Cheers,

A.

You might be surprised that our Helmite party is OK with Tenya who is Chaotic Neutral, but that is fine as Helm has a soft spot for children even ones who can occasionally be quite naughty.

It was well that Thorin has a strong constitution as he was hit almost immediately by lightning losing 59 HP. We were able to rest so that wasn't a problem. :)

If it were me, I would already have a flesh to stone scroll (or two) in a scroll case. Petrification is not meant to be a permadeath (unless the statue is destroyed). So, letting him die there is a bit overkill with the game mechanic. This is not what the game intended, so I wouldn't have a problem Shadowkeepering in a Flesh to Stone scroll, then keepering out the money for it, and take this as a lesson learned. :)

Noted!

CLUAing in a Stone to Flesh scroll wouldn't have felt right to me. I prefer the solution we found. It allowed us to continue the adventure in a manner consistent with intent, without advantage.

Going forward I'll definitely keep a Stone to Flesh scroll on hand. I didn't already have one because this is literally the first time I've seen one of David's mages cast Flesh to Stone.

Congrats on the successful rescue. The prefered spell selections, especially for higher mage levels, have indeed changed somewhat in the newest SCS base version. Another possibly useful hint for future high level wizard encounters that would've saved me some trouble in my first run with that version (put in spoilers if you want to be surprised):

High level mages also love casting imprisonment now. I've encountered it multiple times (and once, successfuly) in use against my party in my last SCS run - so besides stone to flesh, it might be useful to keep a few "freedom" scrolls around as well - as far as I can remember, they're also more widely available in this version.

Makes sense. Now I see the logic behind the revised death effect component. Looks like I'll be reinstalling it.

Alena, Halfling Priest of Lathander, Canon Party Run: The Hero of Trademeet- Mission Impossible

Not going to lie: I was tempted to use the Mission Impossible theme for the rescue of Minsc and Boo. Yes, it would have been cliche, but so what. Cliches are fun. I didn't hold off for fear of unoriginality. I mean, for frack's sake, I'm playing a twenty five year old video game for the twenty five hundredth time. I held off because there was another, upcoming mission that the theme suited even better: the Hero of Trademeet quests.

I know what you're thinking. The Hero of Trademeet quests are glorified fetch missions. There's hardly any combat. Oh, but I'm not talking about punking skeletons. I'm talking about this.
Screenshot 2024-07-07 at 8.11.49 PM 2.jpg
That's right: avoiding convos with EE NPCs. That mission is literally impossible, but gosh, darnit we're going to try. Here comes Special Agent Boo, back from his scouting mission. Cue the music! Dat-dat-dat-dat-dat-dat-dat-dada
giphy.gif
Ok. Rassad is over by the statue- right the frack between where we are and where we want to go. We'll need to keep those Invisibility 10' Radius's at the ready. Jaheira, load up a Pixie Dust, too. Redundancy is key on critical missions. We can't mess this up.
Screenshot 2024-07-07 at 8.10.31 PM.jpg
Oh, and we killed the skeletons.
Screenshot 2024-07-07 at 7.56.38 PM.jpg
And yeah, we nixed Rejiek too.
Screenshot 2024-07-07 at 8.08.33 PM.jpg
But that's not what matters, is it? What really matters is not talking to Rasaad. My sanity depends on it.

It was dicey at times, but we succeeded. Thank Tymora! What a relief! I don't know what I would have done if we failed. There's no way I could handle another conversation with an EE NPC. No. Fracking. Way. Good work, team! Let's go back to the Flagon's and celebrate!
Screenshot 2024-07-07 at 8.17.43 PM.jpg
I was all.
giphy-1.gif
Run away! Retreat! Escape the Bridge District immediately! Now, now: Before it's too late!
N.jpg
Can't win'em all, I guess. Don't worry, Special Agent Boo. We'll get'em next time.

Best,

A.

Alena, Halfling Priest of Lathander, Canon Party Run: Minor Quests in the Bridge District

Having failed their first mission in the bridge district, Alena and her team sought redemption. A minor quest or two would do the trick. Fallen Paladins and Buried Alive will do nicely.

But first we need to deal with these bandits.
Screenshot 2024-07-07 at 8.34.23 PM.jpg
Do you remember how Suna Seni threw us for a loop, simply by dispelling our invisibility? Just to elaborate on that point, here's what happens when we make it to happy fun time, buff land.

Looks a little different, huh?
Screenshot 2024-07-07 at 8.37.05 PM.jpg
Yeah, this isn't going to go well for these bandits.
Screenshot 2024-07-07 at 8.37.47 PM.jpg
This is a full on curb stop already and we haven't swung a weapon yet.
Screenshot 2024-07-07 at 8.38.21 PM.jpg
Then again, who needs weapons when you have summons, Special Snares and Aerie. These days we allocate three priest L5s to Chaotic Commands. Aerie, the elf, takes Harmony. Alena, Jaheira and Minsc take Chaotic Commands. Yoshimo, the bounty hunter, keeps his distance.
Screenshot 2024-07-07 at 8.38.50 PM.jpg
Remove Fear covers the Horror risk. We always keep a couple in out books in case we suffer a dispel.
Screenshot 2024-07-07 at 8.39.18 PM.jpg
Our renewable hold defense options include Harmony, Arbane, the Spear of the Unicorn, Free Action and a pair of Remove Paralysis’s, kept in Aerie and Alena’s books. We’re pretty safe from magicks as long as no one, you know, blindsides us with a Flesh to Stone. Not that that happened here. That was a different ambush. This one was a righteous butt kicking.
Screenshot 2024-07-07 at 8.40.02 PM.jpg
On to Fallen Paladins. These rogues used to drop a ton of invisibility potions. Now they don’t. I’ll admit to being slightly bummed about that. I was planning to milk that in my upcoming bounty hunter run.
Screenshot 2024-07-08 at 6.16.34 PM.jpg
The paladins themselves succumbed to summons, Special Snares and Aerie. These blokes seemed harmless, so we even let those crazy kids, Minsc and Jaheira, play around in the scrum. Have fun you two! Just remember: when the going gets tough Aerie leads the way.
Screenshot 2024-07-08 at 6.28.31 PM.jpg
On a couple of my solo runs I’ve lost the Boots of Avoidance, thanks to a quick exit from Camitis and Reti. I wasn’t about to let that happen here. We sent in Aerie to trigger the encounter, while leaving the rest of the party outside to corner our prey. Have fun with that guys!
Screenshot 2024-07-08 at 7.44.42 PM.jpg
I'm not sure where we're headed next, but Yoshi is getting a little anxious about the whole Renal Bloodscalp thing. Maybe we should check that out?

So what is a worse fate in your eyes: having your character die and losing your run, or triggering an EE NPC dialogue? 😂

I don't get it. What's the matter with them?
I mean I completely understand why a no-reloader wouldn't risk going near a wild mage, but what's wrong with Rasaad?

It's a personal taste thing. Some people don't like the EE NPCs. That alone probably wouldn't be an issue. The problem is the intrusive way they're forced on you, versus the original characters. Cut scenes that never seem to end. I love the EEs overall, but even I'm thinking of trying the mod that removes the NPCs.

Neera is fine if you have a reasonable mount of experience and very little gold. Spend it before you meet her just in case you lose it all in a wild surge, then drop her at Adoy's just so that you don't accidentally kill an innocent.

Thorin joined me without so much as a "By your leave," but I could have dropped him immediately afterwards if I had so desired.

Journal of Strongheart Continued.

Dorn joined us, so we killed Kryll. She wasn't where I expected her so we weren't buffed. We didn't need to be. We dropped him shortly afterwards.

Since our reputation is now 20 we will avoid picking up extra reputation as much as possible.

Alena, Halfling Priest of Lathander, Canon Party Run: Mae'Var's Guild Hall- Anything You Can Do Aerie Can Do Better
Screenshot 2024-07-10 at 6.34.28 AM.jpg

Having defeated the fallen paladins and those lovable kidnappers, we were almost ready to leave the bridge district. We just had one more chore to attend to, stealing an anhkeg shell. When the subject is thievery, it's sensible to think of a thief. Sensible, but wrong. Clerics are better thieves than thieves because of Sanctuary, and cleric/mages are better thieves than clerics because of knock.
A1.jpg
A2.jpg
Sanctuary. Knock. Find Traps. Skull Traps, Glyphs, and Symbol Spells. Aside from backstabbing, Aerie has all the thief skills covered. What's that you say? Harm? Right! I forgot about that. Aerie is a better thief than a thief, isn't she? There are no exceptions.

And so it was fitting that Aerie led the way in our infiltration of Mae'Var's Guild Hall. Aerie was hesitant at first, but she took to the task. After all, stealing from Talossans is a lot more exciting than any circus.
Screenshot 2024-07-08 at 10.24.21 PM.jpg
Even though the EE gutted Polymorph Self, it's still a usable spell. Our plan for the mephit encounter was to buff Aerie against fire and cold, and then let her go to town polymorphed. I was debating between the flind and the sword spider, when I noticed David had overhauled the spell. I was all.
giphy-downsized.gif
We've gone from the original adventure's flind with 3 APR and a +3 halberd, plus a sword spider with 5 APR, poisoning without a save, to the EE's 2 APR each, with the sword spider poison offering a save. Huge change, right? And now David has overhauled it again. The flind and his halberd are gone. So is the ogre and his awesome backstabbing weapon. Now we have a giant with a spear and an ogre mage? Maybe I'll come around on this but as of right now, I'm not happy. The EE nerfed Polymorph Self so much that David had to buff it and now David's buffs have made it unrecognizable. Whatever: Aerie wasn't about to let that get her down. She's ok with being a giant.
Screenshot 2024-07-09 at 2.59.17 PM.jpg
After the mephit fight, Aerie was a little peaked. She needed a pick me up. How about a Red Bull?
FQIJav-WYAARK_o-375484214.jpg
Oops. Sorry, Aerie. It's not, like, literal. How about a double macchiato instead?

With Aerie taking a breather on the golem floor, things didn't go as smoothly. We just let the golems wail on Jaheira until her Iron Skins peeled. Unsubtle, unsophisticated, inefficient, but also all we needed.
Screenshot 2024-07-09 at 3.51.18 PM.jpg
I don't know about you, but I think you're supposed to insta-kill Rayic Gethras. It's a thieves' mission. You use thief skills for Mae'Var's other task, and this mission is unambiguously an assassination. Plus, these days Rayic isn't even rocking Stoneskins. It's an invitation to a backstab.

Or, in our case, a Harm -> Victor charge. Jaheira handled this one, but once Aerie has an L6 this task with slide over to her portfolio. Her arcane buffs make her better suited to it.
Screenshot 2024-07-09 at 4.03.36 PM.jpg
Onto Edwin's documents. Once again, Aerie handled this. Now that she has the Nymph Cloak to go with her Ring of Human Influence, Aerie doesn't even need Friends for missions like this.
Screenshot 2024-07-09 at 4.07.35 PM.jpg
Back to the guild hall, and Mae'Var's test of thief skills. Having a little trouble there, Yosh? Don't worry, I'll take care of it.
Screenshot 2024-07-09 at 4.15.26 PM.jpg
Screenshot 2024-07-09 at 4.15.36 PM.jpg
Thieving. Tanking. Casting. Debuffing. Summoning. You name it and Aerie is the best at it. Ok, Jaheira is better at backstabbing right now, but wait a few levels and Aerie will be queen of that too.
Screenshot 2024-07-09 at 4.52.35 PM.jpg
Aerie did get one thing wrong in this fight, but that's on me, not her. I accidentally repositioned her while she was casting True Sight. That was regrettable, what with all the thieves on the field.
Screenshot 2024-07-09 at 4.52.48 PM.jpg
That's ok, Yoshi doesn't need to see them to Special Snare them. And check out Minsc, using his range 2 weapons from behind that impenetrable wall of witch. You've got it, Minsc: keep those MIs up and let Aerie take the lead. That's the way forward for you. In fact, it's the way forward for all of us. All we need to do is get behind Aerie and we'll make it to the promised land.
Screenshot 2024-07-09 at 4.56.12 PM.jpg

Best,

A.
